Oh man, I would have never known if you hadn’t pointed it out. Thank you so much! /s

Regardless of the validity of this story, I guarantee someone out there has done this to a certain extent. People get worked up about pronouns to such a degree that this almost seems like a relatively tame reaction.

Modern conservatism is mental illness - it’s not a case of being dense - it’s a case of being genuinely disabled.

Ironic for a political ideology grounded in and returning to eugenics.

I don’t think we should be imprisoning the mentally ill (that’s more of a conservative thing) - I think we should be giving them access to treatment. From there, the bulk of the conservative brain damage should resolve itself.

Imprisoning those inciting violence against minorities based on lies and attempting to overthrow the government based on more lies seems like a responsible step in protecting Americans and American democracy though.

It’s hyperbole. They were mocking you for using “mentally disabled” as an insult. You’re the one talking like a conservative right now, using disability as a pejorative.

It’s not true when Conservatives say “Liberalism is a mental disorder”, just as it’s not true when Liberals say “Conservatism is a mental disorder”. The only thing that’s true in that context is that supporters of both major parties have no problem throwing people with mental disabilities under-the-bus over politics.

Republicans are stupid, they are ignorant, they are hateful; but none of those things constitutes a disability. If they did, I would have compassion like I would for any other disabled person.

I’m not saying that Republicans are well-adjusted or that their beliefs are defensible. I’m saying that they aren’t mentally disabled, and you shouldn’t use disability as a cudgel to bash in people you don’t like. Stupidity isn’t a disability, nor is evil, and I have no intent of treating them like they are.

You either want to protect Republican beliefs as a byproduct of a disability, which to that I say: fuck that, I intend to hold Republicans responsible for what they say and do.

Or you want disabled people to be punished for being disabled, because you think mental disability is a trait worthy of condemnation, which to that I say: fuck off you fucking fascist, disabled people deserve compassion and support.

I believe that Republicans are of sound mind, and are either extremely stupid or extremely evil. I offer zero forgiveness for those things. They should be held responsible for it, and not given the easy cop-out of being “disabled”.

If it were a disability, I wouldn’t hate them, I would pity them. I don’t pity them, I hate them, because everything that’s wrong with them is their fucking fault.

          Denying eugenics would be disgusting,

Covering for those that support eugenics would be disgusting,

Being disgusted by someone pointing out the disgusting hypocrisy of eugenics and modern conservatism is disgusting.

Pointing out how monstrous and hypocritical modern conservatives and eugenicists are is a moral good.

I think you’re missing the point of the original comment. Describing modern conservatism as a disability at once absolves conservatives of their responsibility not to hold abhorrent views, by classing it as a characteristic they have no control over, and lumps people with disabilities into a group that, in a non-insignificant number of cases, wants them dead or sterilised.

That’s why the commenter was upset with you; not because you’ve criticised eugenics, but because you’ve been massively insensitive, and when someone pointed out that insensitivity you became defensive and attacked them in return.

I don’t think sane people are able to believe in things like Jewish space lasers, so I don’t think your average GOP voter should be held accountable for believing that kind of nonsense - they should be provided mental health care and an education in critical thinking skills. I don’t care if I get downvoted, I’m not here for that. I have been downvoted recently by neoliberals on this site for literally saying everyone should have the right to vote (and I quoted Lyndon B Johnson and the fucking constitution about this), so we can see how much a downvote is worth here. This isn’t a site for leftists or progressives, or even people with a basic understanding of the Civil Rights Era, and I understand that. So ofc there is someone advocating for something Nazi adjacent here, like medicalizing an entire voting base. Medicalizing something that isn’t a medical condition, especially acting as if their cognition is what is wrong, is something historically done to women in the US right before they got fucking lobotomized and put into conservatorship. It’s a conviction and punishment with no trial. Fascism. Not to mention what the actual Nazis did to people they considered disabled.

It’s not “pointing out” anything to medicalize them. It’s an attempt to erode their rights by using laws that ALREADY abuse disabled people.

It’s so funny how disabled people are the perfect weapon for pieces of shit who dont care about them. No one cares about helping the disabled unless it means they can weaponize them against another group they hate. Usually it’s the homeless but ig today it’s conservatives.

Yep - it’s rational, correct cognition to think that Haitians are stealing and eating people’s dogs, that Jewish space lasers caused the California wildfires, that a multi-trillion dollar fence will stop illegal immigration, that Hannibal Lecter was a real and good person, that Clinton should be locked up, but I’m voting for the felon, that the election was stolen, that the Democratic Party is a sinister communist cabal, that Michelle Obama is a man, that Biden has opened the borders and is importing millions of immigrants to steal the election, that the deep state is conspiring to do everything we don’t like…

These are the mainstream views of the party as propagated by its leaders - it says nothing of the chemtrails making the frogs gay, hollow earth types.

…and here you are, fantasising about me abusing and weaponising the disabled - maybe even pushing for a little light lobotomy because that allows you to feel morally superior. Personally, I’d recommend stepping out of your fantasy, grounding your comments in reality and being morally superior, but what would my apparently Nazi arse know?

That lack of impulse control and rage has no place in a family setting… or anywhere really.

It doesn’t work that way. These “people’s” worldview is “heads I win, tails you lose.” They will be selectively hyper-credulous to whatever bullshit they want to believe, while turning into hyper-skeptics about anything they don’t want to believe.

You will never, ever win against them with a logical argument, not even reverse psychology, because the only rules they play by are the ones they make up second-by-second to make them victorious against you.

Yeah this looks fake because it’s a dramatization of reality. I’ve seen young dudes IRL argue whether it’s “gay” to wash the balls, and the unmentionables behind that. Literally just soap and water bathing. We’re talking people so uneducated they don’t know the word “gooch” or “taint”, or anything similar. There’s always at least one older dude who leaves to shower like a normal person, but he’ll be back later to buy some weed.

Tangent, but can you imagine buying weed from someone who doesn’t wash their ass? That’s part of the history of the war on drugs. Unwashed perineums, in your lungs.

      The year was 1991.
My roommate decides to eat hot dogs.
We keep breads in the freezer so they last. Toaster is broken.
I tell this to my roommate before I go to the toilet.
I come out and I see a pot of boiling water with hot dogs and hot dog buns in it.
My roommate decided to boil bread to warm it up.

I had a friend that liked to put butter and honey on his bread before he put it in a two slice toaster. He did this every morning for years.

Each time the toaster broke or caught fire, he would put it out and get a new toaster and repeat the process. He may still be doing it to this day.

I’m less offended at the boiled bread than I am at the boiled hotdogs.

you might as well just eat them cold, they’re precooked. You heat them on a pan (or grill) to add FLAVOR. boiling generally removes flavor. Browning the skin in some way (Grill, pan, those rollers at gas stations,) is that flavor.

The only exception to boiling removing flavor is hot dog carts and stands and such like, where the water hasn’t been changed… ever… Yes. it tastes amazing. no. You don’t want to know why that is.

One could argue that so called “traditions” they are holding so much dearly in their heart never was fully a thing and is just the product of past idealizations and marketing propaganda. “The perfect suburban american trad family” from the 60s is a construct made by marketing people to sell fridges, diamond and beautiful car.

“The perfect suburban american trad family” from the 60s

Had one working parent and stay at home moms. But they don’t give a single fuck about that part of it, do they?

“Nobody paid that. They just reinvested in their company [and their employees and reputation] instead.”

No shit. Sounds great. Let’s do that.

The world is honestly too far into the crumbles for it to work like that anymore, they would just use circuitous accounting to funnel it into bunkers, militarized yachts, private armies, and extra planetary fever dreams.

Can’t just give up though. It’s one step towards making things better.

We don’t have to solve it all at once.

Idealizing a fake era of greatness which came before the weak, but also very powerful bad people took it away.

Now where have I heard that one before? 🤔

Climate change is a thing and back then life was cheaper, this “MuH WhIte PeOpLe” shit needs to stop. 80s and 90s were not some sort of ethnonationalist world where black people were genocided.

I thought we were talking about the 1960s? You know, the era that where black people didn’t have civil rights or even voting rights in some places legally until the middle of the decade and were still being lynched in significant numbers? The era where both Malcolm X and Dr. King were assassinated?

                  I stand by my comment.

Conservatism is about favoring tradition and supporting the status quo.

That’s just what Conservatism claims to be about, but it has always been regressive

I think we agree that most self-identified conservatives aren’t actually very invested in the status quo or tradition, and are actually regressive reactionaries, but I think it’s a clearer point to say that most self-identified conservatives aren’t in fact conservative, than that conservatism isn’t actually what people (claim they) mean when they say conservative. At that point, conservatism loses its meaning.

Conservatism hasn’t lost its meaning, conservatism just never meant what conservatives claimed it meant; it’s always been a façade.

Conservatism is about conserving (and reinforcing) power structures; all talk about ‘tradition’ and ‘stability’/‘status-quo’ is wool over your eyes.

The status quo is white supremacy, patriarchy, gender norms, and capitalism. That is what they are conserving. Those are the traditions.

In liberal democracy, the status quo is liberalism. Conservatism was to conserve the monarchy and aristocracy.

There is a difference between historical conservatism and what it has become. Even setting that aside, there is much daylight between what a movement will profess and what it will ultimately produce.

No, there really isn’t. True conservatism is an unbroken line from royalists, to confederates, to nazis, to Trump.

It’s the allegedly small government, pro-freedom “conservatives” – i.e. self-deluded liberals who mislabeled themselves – who were the aberration.

I would suggest it’s the conservative ideologies that are toxic, education is the antidote.
