In my experience here locally, rural area in the southern USA, I haven’t been hearing anybody harping on the Muslim angle in person. Certainly not even a tiny fraction of the amount these people did and still do with Obama. Now, I don’t follow these folks online to see what they’re posting there, so I’m going solely by the comments they are willing to take offline and say in person.

Obviously this is a fickle cult and the boogie-man du jour changes faster than I can keep up, but pretty much since primary season started, they’ve been going hard and heavy with “Communist”. Anything that’s in direct contrast to the Trump and Republican agenda, communism. Every problem in the world is due to communism. Well that’s a lie. But obviously the prior boogie-persons du jour are too (trans, immigrants, fact checking). Everybody that does not like what’s going on in this country is a communist.

There’s a DINO Republican running under the Dem ticket in a district close enough to mine that I get opposition ads online and in streaming stuff – they’re even calling him a woke Communist supporter. The Dems in his area aren’t terribly fond of the guy, his policies are all middle of the road centrist Republican aligned with the exception that he is a staunch Trump opponent. And yet that D beside his name on the ballot is enough that they’re trying to hang those buzzwords around his neck – woke communist.

Having said that, my new number had been added to some kind of seemingly Christian Nationalist text group (presumably prior to me getting it, but who knows?). I didn’t notice for a while because I just ignored the texts. Then one day I was cleaning out all the random mess and decided to look at what was being sent. Yes, those folks are very much anti-Muslim, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see the the “He’s a Muslim” being pandered to that crowd.

I agree with all the rest except for gas. And not because I want oil companies to keep making huge profits, but rather because our oil based economy is bad for the environment, for us, and in turn, for the future economy. It’s really sad to see politicians from nearly all horizons just promise cheap gas to everyone. We should free as much people as possible from the burden of having to pay for gas in the first place. We should have more affordable public transit and more protected bike lanes and paths, not cheaper gas. Fuck the oil industry. We should starve it, not encourage it.

While I agree with almost everything you’re saying, the reality is that too much of our infrastructure and peoples’ lives are based on gas. Removing gas subsidies and limiting production needs to be preceded by cost effective measures to allow people to move away from gas. This means better mass transit, a more robust electrical grid, more diverse renewable electrical generation and storage, and cost effective sustainable vehicles (both cars and semis.) There is a sharp divide between those that can afford electric vehicles and those who cannot. Those that cannot would be hit double hard by an increased cost of good that are transported by gas vehicles. Gas should be more expensive, but alternatives need to be more viable.

Did you expect them to sell themselves based on their identity and then to come at their competitor with arguments based on ideology? Of course they’re making this about identity.

We already have an apocope for “got them”, it’s got 'em. You don’t add another consonant. I guess people are saving up their apostrophes for all the incorrect “it’s” they sprinkle everywhere.

Thanks for “apocope”! I learned a new word today! It’s amusing to see such passion in what the correct usage of spelling should be for a word morphed by how it has been spoken. Would we be presumptuous, if not playful, to say that “gottem” in its multisyllabic form is without similar merit as got 'em?

It doesn’t even make sense. “Wanna” means “want to” where the “to” is elided to a final “uh” sound, just like gotta. “Gottem” makes you want to pronounce the T even harder and longer, what’s the point?

“a word morphed by how it has been spoken”

It’s not “a” word, it’s two words. Got. Them. The rule has always been to use an apostrophe, got 'em! Can not, can’t. At worst: got’em. “Gottem” makes no sense.

Good. They should be. Their entire world view on socialism, caring for others, and brown people doing nice things is about to completely implode in real time. Everything they’ve been told, everything they’ve believed, everything they completely commit their every life to is about to change. They may have to gasp have some introspective on how they view the world outside of their bubble.

      That must be fucking terrifying.

I read something somewhere… Sometime. The gist of it was that, to some people, their personal beliefs, they are so heavily vested in them, so completely inside a bubble, that anything that threatens that bubble evokes an emotional response akin to a fear of death, because in a sense, if they give up everything they ever believed in, they die. That self has to die to accept reality. And for some, for many, that deal is simply too tough to take, so they double down.

Sorry if I’m rambling, there was an interesting thought in there, if waxing a bit Freudian.

Oh no, you summed up what I was trying to say far better than I did. I wasn’t entirely joking in my comment. I was 100% serious (albeit with sarcastic undertones). But it’s genuinely a real thing. People would rather die than change or believe anything outside of what they have known or been told to believe for so many years.

That’s patriarchy, not Islam. Inform yourself about christianity and you’ll find much the same. It’s just a different flavour of misogyny. In medieval times, arabic/islamic countries were the educated centers of culture and christian Europe was the barbaric part of the world. Now the scale looks tipped the other way. All the while, evangelical misogynists kill women by denying them life-saving treatments when they are suspected to be pregnant.

All religions are fucked up. If any of them was truly about belief, and not controlling people (and especially women’s bodies), there’d be zero need for an institutionalized belief system.

It doesn’t though, some Muslims do. Just like some Christians do. You got mad when someone else used a No True Scotsman argument, but “Islam oppresses women” implicitly uses the exact same argument. “Islam oppresses women, therefore any “Muslim” that doesn’t, isn’t practicing real Islam.”

  • This meme illustrates both fundamental campaign strategies.

Progressive Democrats offer a platform, some specific policies they seek out to move forward.

Republicans stick to slogans, culture war issues and demonizing political opponents with thought-terminating clichés.
