CEO Carl Pei says remote work “is not compatible” with the company.
‘This is a company for grown ups’
And yet you don’t trust your employees to get their work done unless directly before your watchful eye? Get real, chump.
“People can’t communicate as well remotely,” the CEO, projecting their personal lack of communication skills on everyone else.
Unironically written by the CEO of a mobile phone company.
Nothing doings.
Projection. Guys like this are admitting that they themselves are incapable of the discipline required for at home work and think no one else can either.
I really liked the work Nothing was doing, what a bummer. “this is a company for grown ups” my ass, how condescending.
What work? They are just regular phones, with a bit more ego centric bs marketing showered over.
The design and interface mostly. Nothing UI is actually pleasurable to use, but I’m a fan of minimalism.
Fair, but isn’t it just pretty much just stock android? I guess it’s nice to have another option out there for (almost) stock though.
Stock android doesn’t really exist. It barely works and is missing essential features like working Bluetooth audio. It’s intended as a starting point for companies to build their own experience on top of, if any company released a phone running anywhere near stock android they would be laughed out of existence. Linus Tech tips did a pretty good overview of what stock android is a few days ago https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=-hlRB2izres
Sure, but that’s not really what people mean when they talk about “stock android”. Generally it means a version you would find on a Pixel or Xperia phone, the bare minimum basically without complete overhauls like OneUI etc.
But you already knew that.
That version doesn’t exist is what I’m saying. The manufacturers have to put in significant work to get it to that point. And along the way they have to choose to make it similar to pixel/what people expect “stock” android to look like, instead of putting their own flair on it. My point is that it takes just as much work to make an android skin that feels “stock” as to make one that doesn’t. You can’t dismiss their version of Android as being “stock” because that doesn’t exist.
Yeah their hardware was overpriced and I couldn’t find any justification for their prices being higher than “well but we’re independent and our hardware is aesthetically pleasing”
Like… I get why Teracube and Fairphone are expensive for their specs. But Nothing gave me cryptobro vibes
Fairphone are expensive for their specs
ye, and its a price I gladly paid for my fairphone 5. I love that thing :D
The thing is… Fair phone is how expensive all phones their capability should be. Its just that most phones are greed machines produced via the exploitation of labor
Wait, a CEO that’s a total sack of shit? I don’t believe it!
/s
It’s a requirement at this point. Evil is the only way up, or so they tell themselves.
What a huge L. I thought this guy was cool.
It’s only a matter of time in a position like that before they go full Elon.
Ah, layoffs are coming to nothing soon. Well, sorry to hear that they are struggling.
I mean, presumably they had to grab office space to make this move since they started during the pan, so maybe not.
That headline is rather confusing. Then I realised that “Nothing” is a fricking company.
Also branding his stuff as Nothing phone/OS/ear is hilarious. Hilariously bad.
I think it’s a bit of a stroke of genius on the article author’s part, because it’s a great double entendre the way it’s written.
totally agree. this guy couldnt market his way out of a paper bag… like naming a social media server ‘moist’
I’m assuming he made this declaration from his office, otherwise it would be hypocritical, and that’s impossible. Surely.
how to get rid of your best and most talented workers
How to do lay off people without having to fork out severance pay.
I’ve seen that theory a lot, but I just don’t think it’s actually all that common. Layoffs are layoffs, but the common thing about layoffs is they are usually calculated to cut the worst performing employees and go up from there.
A forced RTO policy is going to be unpredictable in who stays and who goes
The thing is, these decisions are made at a level that doesn’t much care for the distinction. Mid-level managers know who the good workers are, and in regular layoffs they’d be making decisions about who to lay off. But even before that happens, top-level executives have decided how many to lay off, and it’s not much of a concern to them who specifically goes.
Same with RTO constructive layoffs. They estimate a certain percentage will quit, reducing their cost base. There’s not much more thought than that.
Even worse, mandatory RTO selects for employees who have no choice but to stay. The talent will bail out.
also it guarantees that everyone starts using working hours to apply for jobs instead of doing their work.
theres nothing i hate more than nothing nothing keeps me up at night i toss and turn over nothing nothing can cause a great big fight
“Remote work is not compatible with a high ambition level plus high speed,”
Because wasting time shipping squishy sacks of flesh through meatspace to push buttons is so much faster than having them push buttons at home. /s
But if you have as shitty a company name as “Nothing” then I guess you need all the ambition you can get.
You forget, said shipping of fleshbags is done on UNPAID time. CEOs love unpaid time.
Not that it matters but that would make me incompatible with the company.
“I know this is a controversial decision that may not be a fit for everyone, and there are definitely companies out there that thrive in remote or hybrid setups,” he added. “But that’s not right for our type of business, and won’t help us fully realize our potential as a company.”
By comparison, Nothing’s demand for five-day office attendance may sting for employees who helped shape the company while embracing its founding work-from-home environment.
Besides calling people who want flexibility children, the company was founded as work from home even though that wasn’t right for the type of company. Sounds like the CEO doesn’t know how the company works.
He doesn’t want a paper trail
If you’re confused like me, the company is called Nothing.
