slop peddlers be like “soon, you won’t be able to tell what is AI and what isn’t” and then years later post the kinds of blatant mistakes not even someone trying to draw for the first time in their life would make

At least one of two things is true:
- no artist attribution
- slop
Either way, downvoted and blocked.
Every time.
My previous car, a big ugly van, was the car of my dreams while I owned it. When my circumstances changed, I bought a tiny 4WD and that is now the car of my dreams. Would I trade it for a lambo? Of course, but then I’d sell the lambo, buy my lil 4wd back, and pocket the difference
Is this ai? It’s so weird
I’m no expert, but inconsistent panels, backgrounds, and points of view suggest probably.
Look at the rims in the first panel and the roads in the second one.
Parking bay directly in front of traffic lines? Yeah looks AI to me.
Volvos are fucking expensive nowadays
At least in Australia they’ve been just behind ze Germans in terms of price and perceived quality since the 90s
Volvos are stealth-wealth.
Now? They’ve been upmarket for a while.
Yes, nowadays, they were quite affordable back in the day.
Stolen from artist Igor Kalashnikov
I don’t think this is stealing in that sense, since the last panel subverts the meaning for humorous effect like any other meme born out of a comic strip (although this particular joke has been done before too).
My own main gripe is that the post is just horrendeous AI slop in its execution.
The theme of of the Igor Kalashnikov comic and the one in this post are basically opposite though?
Fuck dude even on LEMMY of all places people still need internet trophy points.
We need front facing third row wagons again.
What about the old rear-facing third row, stare death right in the eyes.
Your wagon’s sick? What’s wrong with it?
Bruh
I always wanted a Volvo turbo sports wagon.
P2 chassis is awesome. I miss my S60R. That one was a 6 speed manual. I had a few items to take the power level up to 360 or so hp. Also had an 01 XC70. Super comfy car and was an absolute unstoppable tank in winter driving conditions.

Does this land abruptly end into a parking space?

Besides there being no artist name how did you know on this? the Bugatti steering wheel is a bit off.
The rims on the Bugatti are super melty as well, dead giveaway.
Why is there a parking lot in front of the road the bugatti is driving on?
And nobody would spend that much effort drawing specific cars with such detail for a dumb joke like this one.
You can tell because of the way it is.
Personally, I have a third sense for the style. I can’t explain it in a scientific manner that is repeatable by others. I just know it. Its a skill I can’t use to actually “prove” it to someone, but it keeps me in the know. Useless, yet useful.
If you drew a hyper detailed Bugatti in the first panel, and then didn’t change the orientation at all would you draw it two more times slightly differently or would you copy and paste?
I would’ve taken a picture of the Crosshairs figure from Transformers: Cybertron and traced over it.
I don’t know that I can explain it as anything other than too much detail in the ‘wrong’ spots compared to what an actual person would do. Very detailed cars while having cartoon blob characters that phase out of existence randomly and things that don’t follow from one panel to the next (like the road leading directly to a parking spot, then both cars being in an unmarked grey asphalt field) all make my brain go “AI!”
Yeah, it’s a mixing of art styles.
The road, yacht, and bushes all choose not to put very much detail, but the actual cars are all essentially flattened photographs with perfect perspective and angles and shadows.
Not saying that level of accurate detail isn’t possible with hand-drawn comics (see pbfcomics for an artist who is simply amazing at choosing the level of detail appropriate for the joke) but the subtle mismatch just looks wrong at first glance.
Then, the inaccurate details in the exact same comic. It doesn’t seem like one coherent work with one author.
As an former professional vector graphic designer, I can tell you exactly what’s going on here. They traced photos of cars.
I got my first graphic design gig by being insanely fast (for the time) at creating vector graphics that would read well at any size, from page number decorations to billboards, for a magazine. We seriously got unsolicited compliments on our new graphics sprinkled around the magazine, and had new clients advertise with us just so I’d design some new logos for them.
What most people didn’t know was that my speed was because I was really quick at finding source images, clipping things together so that my reference image would be “unique”, and then I’d just isolate and trace the general shapes and enough details. Unfortunately, I became too popular for my own good.
My publisher one day gave me a very vague and broad request for a two-page spread, which included objects, people, and a “landscape or background that doesn’t draw too much attention.” It took me a day, but I presented my design the next morning. The publisher stared at it for a while, then simply said, “so, I guess you’re only good at tracing things,” and handed my printout back to me.
He later visited my desk and said that he didn’t want to see another design until I figured out how to make the background as good as the foreground. So, of course, I made the foreground graphics worse. He was very happy with this.
Over the next couple of months, with lots of practice, I became very skilled at making my traced designs just sloppy enough to not stand out. Understandably, they fired me. The end.
While that can be how style could be mismatched, in this case it’s generally for that AI slop feel. For example, I doubt you would have retraced the same thing from the same angle but subtly different for a new frame instead of just copying and scaling it.
And of course all the other stuff with it.
Yep that does make sense
You have a highway ending in a parking spot.
I’m curious to hear how they knew, as well. For some things, it’s immediately obvious to me, but then there’s stuff that others call out that I’m clueless about. I’d really like to learn. Maybe it’s because I don’t use any of the generative AI stuff, so I’m not familiar enough with its output to spot it? Or maybe I’m just getting old - lol, dammit…
It’s not your ADHD, Generative AI is designed to produce “good enough” output to fool you. I wouldn’t have noticed the lane leading to the parked car if I hadn’t suspected AI from the general style.
Generally one thing that gives AI slop away is that it looks from first look to be high-effort, but the main content itself (here the meme text), is extremely low-effort. A skilled artist wouldn’t spend hours drawing something for such a low-effort, overdone joke.
This one almost got me cause I like the Volvo XC 90, thanks

I wish I had a parking space right in the middle of a seaside highway.
Eh, they’re overrated. Every time a station wagon passes by the markings and ocean just despawn and that ruins them for me.
Any space can be a parking space if you just believe.
