I know we have our complaints about the browser, but I liked this one :)

Great ad! But here I am on Chrome and Edge with zero adverts, even on YouTube. (I know, tracking is a thing.)

I don’t even know how I killed YT adverts. My Pihole?

I also think some outreach is important, especially if they can get that through memes instead of paying Facebook/Google.

Having more people using Firefox instead of Google chrome is a good thing. If nothing else, websites will have more of an incentive to make sure websites work on non-chromium browsers.

And hey, if a few of those new users donate to the project, they can be less reliant on Google and sponsored content

Waterfox didn’t come out of thin air, though. It still needs Firefox to provide an updated browser code so they can do their changes. I doubt they could handle a full browser standalone on their own.

Oh yeah. But, they rip out all the ai. I’ll stick with that until Firefox makes it impossible (which they almost certainly will).

          I’ll move on after that.

An LLM in my browser is completely unnecessary and actively useless

How about no AI and crap opted-in by default? Seriously, Vivaldi is great for my needs, and I haven’t had any problems using ublock origin and other ad blocking extensions with it.

I’ve been ride or die with FF since before Chrome was a thing. I keep Vivaldi installed for a few things, but FF is my daily driver.

I know that Mozilla has made some decisions that I don’t agree with, but the Internet would be worse off without FF.

    Maybe questionably truthful.

But at this point, I’d settle for a not-Cyberpunk future. The prospect of a total Chrome monopoly horrifies me, hence I’m all for this ad.

I have to keep a version of Chrome around because Firefox refuses to support or won’t support web USB. But other than that my daily driver is Zen. Firefox based. And I wouldn’t trade it.

I do this too, but I can very much respect the decision not to support any kind of hardware-level access from a web browser.

To an extent sure. But if their adding some ai MCP server to the browser etc. It’s going to be way more dangerous. So for me at least of kind of a wash.

Yes Firefox has pretty much been my daily driver since before it was called Firefox. And the UI overhaul in zen definitely elevates it. I wish the Mozilla Foundation was less focused on AI and advertisement bullshit and more focused on things like UI improvements or web USB support etc. The underlying engine is pretty decent. But it’s the foundations behavior that really makes it not viable for a lot of people.

Not OP, but it’s insanely useful for microcontroller stuff

Was part of a team who created an esp32 based gadget for “regular” people at a convention, and it was super easy to set up a website that reflashed the device if they wanted to change something or messed something up

No need for users to install weird sdks, tool chains or using a terminal

This. I have installed wled via espressifs ide and tools. It’s disable. A lot more work.

I’m all for the isolation and such. It absolutely shouldn’t be avalible to just any website. But comparatively it’s way easier.

Firefox is pretty great, but I prefer privacy and security by default, which is why I run librewolf only over VPN. I could go TOR, but man that’s a pain.

The Internet you loved is still here.

No it isn’t. The internet I loved is long-since dead. This is the same shit internet. Firefox doesn’t magically bring you to a wondrous new world of memes, and sites can still collect enough data on your device usage to build massive advertising profiles for you, despite what one may have convinced themselves of with a plethora of extensions. Also feels weird calling out browsers with built-in AI, considering the CEO’s dreams to integrate AI even deeper into Firefox.

It’s a cute ad, but the core messaging is flawed.

While Firefox alone doesn’t transport you to that internet, I think the point is that browsers like Firefox are one of the pieces that makes up that older experience. Fediverse being another, I would say a lot of us are here because we remember this style of social media.

They have improved the intentionality of the AI features, I wish they had it opt-out and easily configurable from the start. I moved to Zen a while back (which still relies on Firefox pushing out updates)
