First off, Fitgirl repacks often fail to unpack properly on Linux through WINE/Proton. I prefer naked game folders compressed into an archive instead of a stupid setup.exe that’s just an over glorified 7z decompressor anyways behind the scenes. You posted this on .world instead of a piracy friendly community unfortunately so you’d have to DM me for linux friendly filesharing sources if you care to.

My non-Steam workflow is basically this. I use Faugus Launcher instead of Heroic: https://github.com/Faugus/faugus-launcher but with the other comments here you’ll realise the same steps apply to any of this stuff. Lutris, Heroic, Faugus, whatever. Just different GUI.

Scenario 1: I find ready to go compressed game folder archive and avoid an annoying installer.

    1. Extract archive, add game exe to Faugus Launcher.

    2. Hit play. If it doesn’t work, try a different proton variant like GE. Proton-GE especially good for non-Steam indie or very old games. If it pops an error about C++ redist missing or whatever, right click the game in Faugus and run winetricks to install that to the prefix. If it still doesn’t work, look up on Protondb for launch argument fixes. If it still doesn’t work, cry myself to sleep. https://www.protondb.com/

    Or:

Scenario 2: I can’t find anything without having to run a Windows setup program first.

    1. Add setup exe to Faugus, rename prefix to what the game is called before clicking ok.

    2. Hopefully install the game without setup hanging, thus wasting much time and bandwidth.

    3. Go back to Faugus and right click the prefix I added earlier to run setup exe. Change path to installed game exe. Prefix doesn’t change, uses same folder the setup exe did.

    4. Play game, refer to step 2 in previous scenario for troubleshooting.

    Oh and:

  • Figure out why you feel compelled to constantly look first because there’s a variety of reasons why we can be stuck in a rut. Mine was indoctrinated into me. 1990’s school and family taught me to feel shame for not keeping up with current events. My dad seemed to think it was his duty to watch cable news.

Your reason(s) could be different. I had to learn that disconnecting isn’t shameful and isn’t actually harmful. I’m a peasant with very minority progressive points of view in Alberta. I can’t really affect very much at all with knowledge not even through voting under a FPTP system. Nothing peaceful anyways and anything else is taboo still since things haven’t declined far enough yet. If my mood is particularly sour, I can disconnect entirely up until I have to make a potentially important decision. Then, I already know where to go looking to get caught up on relevant information immediately. You would too, I’m sure you’re well practiced.

I replaced corporate algorithms and content aggregators with RSS feeds for news. I replaced short form video content with nothing since I don’t think there’s a healthy form of it. I lost word of mouth information especially when it comes to entertainment and local activist information. That’s replaced with email newsletters. Took a lot of time to set up but I feel locally connected in a healthier way now.

I word filter Fediverse. Not always, just when I feel burn out. I can with this instance or I could use an app for Lemmy based instances lacking the feature. I have a separate browser extension called FilterBubble for platform agnostic filtering. Again, I toggle my lists on and off depending on my mood. I don’t sub to too many meme or news communities here, peace of mind. My RSS feeds are higher quality and match my tastes. I really don’t need to see anything posted by media owned by American billionaires or Post Media. Stuff like that.

  • The latest puzzle: what the viroids doin’ in our guts? Nobody knows, we are only just realised they are widespread and not exclusive to flowers or whatever Anton told me. Tiny simple RNA smudges that are too simple to even qualify as a virus.

I feel like they’re as close to abiogenesis as we’ll ever get, with these living fossils.

  • Paper route at 10 years old until I was 14 or so. I bought a PS2 and my first computer with that money.

Then I worked part time at a pizza joint until I was 19, just as a cook. I sometimes did opening shifts on weekends but not often. By Grade 11 / 17 years old I only attended high school until lunch break for my last two years there (I exploited a few specific classes, had 52 out of 100 credits in my first year alone) and then started work by noon and working until 7pm. A lot of my friends worked there too so they’d do 4pm - 7pm after school, just the supper rush.
