British sci-FI: nuclear war. Almost everyone dead. Bit of a Tuesday, innit?
Oh well, off to work lads, tally ho!
Rodney: But Deell! Grandad’s got his foot stuck in the replicator, and the soylent police keep putting knives and forks through the letterbox!
*laughter*
Delboy: I’ll put you plonkers both through the letterbox if you dont hush up!
*laughter, applause*
Hey! There are also Japanese sci-fi which just validate the author’s fetishes. There’s even two I know where that fetish is specifically polygamy.
Canadian/German sci-fi: All of the above.
LEXX - The Beginning + Brunnen G Fight Song looks interesting, but not much plot. There’s a review of the show with heavy spoilering, quick FFWD recommended, which then praises its complexity and creativity, comparing it to Terry Gilliam amongst others… enough for me, I’m in.
Tim Curry as Poet Man. Fun show.
There’s actually a lot of decent sci Fi with Canadian creators / writers / cast / filming location
The main rule is that it will be set anywhere but Canada
Yes, yes, we’ve all seen the Stargate shows and films
The cube is amazing
This just made me think of the show Continuum… I think I only watched the first couple seasons, I remember starting to lose interest at one point but it was years ago. Maybe I’ll revisit.
Show was Canadian as fuck though haha.
Australians did the Seppo Nuclear Apocalypse first.
That was the whole premise behind MadMax 2.
Isn’t most American SciFi the direct counterpart to British SciFi?
Space army fights bad aliens. Space radioactive now, but bad aliens dead 👍 Space Captain hero.
Also, my friend needs some examples of French SciFi.
I’m fairly sure that’s half referring to Fantastic Planet, but might also Gandahar. Both rated PG for copious unfun, more like decorative boobs.
The French sci-fi one is literally Moebius comics
My friend literally doesn’t know what that is.
The Incal is fantastic. Last I heard some American studio was trying to make a movie out of it
Does your friend somehow not know that searching is a thing?
literally?
Fifth Element
Ah, Luc Besson, solid if not particularly deep entertainment. Just what the doctor ordered.
We’ll see about those breasts.
Barbarella. It’s an incredibly weird movie with
Brigitte BardotJane Fonda as the bombshell. Pretty sure the provided definition of french sci-fi is based on this movie.Edit: misremembered the actress
One of my favorite memories is watching someone on acid watching Barbarella for 10 minutes.
It’s a fun, goofy movie. But the blue knife-teeth babies will ruin your week.
American sci-fi goes all over the place. Look at Phillip K. Dick for instance.
That dude was on an island by himself with the insane shit he wrote
In addition to Moebius, you can also check out the Valérian et Laureline comics. They fit the script (but they are so much more !)
That last one might not be sci-fi for long
At one point in my life, every time I got a serious stomach flu, I would watch Threads (1984) so I could enjoy my life for even a bit.
I need to watch more French Sci-Fi
just read some Metal Hurlant and Pilote - it is way wilder than the movies.
At the same time, go watch Heavy Metal. The soundtrack alone is well worth it.
Alien 4 of all things is actually pretty accurate adaptation of Metal Hurlant wacky aesthetics.
Well France did “Le Voyage Dans la Lune” in1892 (the first ever SF movie) and more recently “Fifth Element” and “Mars Express”.

Um, hate to remind you but Fifth Element came out 29 years ago. Fucking Valerian adaptation is almost 10 years old already.
hate to remind you but Fifth Element came out 29 years ago.
Still more than 100 years more recent than the other one. And, incidentally, a time I still remember well. When Fifth Element came out, that is.
man, i wish i could remember 1902 well as well.
The Valerian movie is one of those movie I just can’t get over. Like, it retroactively changed my understanding of bad chemistry so fundamentally that I genuinely get confused when people say that about other movies. It shifted my ability to tell in the way adding a thousand individual 0s to a data set shifts the average.
At the same time, it every single other facet of the movie is so astoundingly good that I can’t forget it, the concepts it brings are just too deep and rich in flavor to not want more from it.
In a perfect world we’d get a spoof of the production of the movie where the director is some aged Playboy uncle to Dane Dehaan and has spent a fortune and called in decades worth of favors to orchestrate the production of this movie just to put his cronically unfuckable nephew in direct contact with the actress he’s obsessed with in hopes of reliving his youthful conquests vicariously through this kid who embodies all of the distasteful behaviors of that era without any of the charisma and passé that made it acceptable at the time.
Fuck… I need to watch that movie again…
The main character is a boy who tells the story of the movie to his big sister while swinging is can of mountain dew. He is to young to understand romantic relationships so he just copies the stuff he has seen on the old VHS of his das/uncle. Thats why the trash props are all plastic tubes and papermash.
Its a tribute to the young fans of scyfi who grew up in this weird male view of what outer space would be confronted with the view of the sisters friends and mothers of those boys who liked the stories as well but spun a wider more based Version of the caged male fantasy of “different”.
Trust me watch this shit in acid. It will blow your mind “anders” (as the german kids like to say ;))
It was probably meant for people who want to fuck their sister, because those two had immense sibling energy. Unfortunately they also had immense asexual energy.
Dehaan was kinda hot shit back when he was cast even though it was instant miscast (he was in that weird Metallica movie among other things and he did well in A Cure for Wellness) - but by the time the movie came out he was as cold as two day shit. So that’s on Besson. Miles Teller or Alden Ehrenreich would’ve been better choices because they have punchable faces and a shit eating grins which is integral part of early Valerian - that dude was obnoxious.
funny thing is that Bruce Willis in Fifth Element is actually quite accurate latter day jaded Valerian - so it is not like Besson couldn’t figure out how to do that character but i guess EuropaCorp had softened his brains quite a bit.
Read the comics (Bande dessinée). And it should have been named Laureline. Valérian can manage but Laureline is the true heroine.
City of lost children
Alphaville
Yes, Mars Express was actually really good but it’s as oversexed as most of French cinema (except for comedies which consist mostly of shouting).
It’s not over-sexed for Frenchies …

British Sci-fi: Threads
And the American version was The Day After (1983)
Entirely different movies with the same premise. The Day After messed me up as a kid. But Threads haunts me as an adult.
The Day After gets way more fucked up when you watch the roundtable discussion that took place after its premiere. Now that’s some parallel reality mental prolapse.
oh wow, Carl Sagan and henry kissinger on that panel for the discussion, with Ted Koppel mediating 🫥 god, remember when news was interesting and not 24/7 doom-rage mind rot?
Oooh, where’s that at? I’d love to watch it
its on youtube. and it is quite fucked up. with folks like that end of the world is probably the best case scenario.
as an addon - there was also BBC After Dark episode about Chornobyl which was “white people feeling bad about famine in Africa” level of white savior bullshit - their arrogance is actively repulsive.
it’s technically a docudrama. and then it gets bored.
There’s also When the Wind Blows, if you want to be depressed but also want an absolute banger of a soundtrack.
When the Wind Blows is borderline optimistic compared to Watership Down.
Also the inspiration for a banging Iron Maiden track.
Best on that album for sure
This makes the running joke from Extras where everyone would get the name of the main character’s show wrong (a silly British sitcom called “when the whistle blows”) even funnier
British sci-fi is more likely one of these:
- Dysfunctional but mysterious magical traveler and his witless sidekicks stumble through space and time having campy adventures.
- Dysfunctional band of renegades rush through space having campy adventures fighting a heartless evil empire with witty retorts.
- Dysfunctional group of misfits stumble through space skewering each other with witty retorts and having campy adventures while trying to find their way home.
There’s definitely a pattern there.
all three of that is just Doctor Who,
don’t forget that Black Mirror started british
I think the second one is Blake’s 7.
Third is Red Dwarf
i’ll bet both of ya that Doctor Who has at least 3 episodes that fit each of those exact descriptions
more like thirty three. you underestimate the variety of 3, 4, 5 Doctors
All of you are correct! 😂
I read the first one as Hitchhikers Guide. Or maybe that’s 3
Space.
British sci-fi is more like:
“Oh freddled gruntbuggly,Thy micturations are to me as plurdled gabbleblotchits”
…on a lurgid bee. Groop! I implore thee, my foonting turlingdromes…
I didn’t know Wall-E was Japanese… well, his parts could be made in Japan.
Domo arigato, Mr Roboto?
swedish sci-fi for some reason: 200-page rhyming epics exploring the human need for self-expression even in the face of certain doom or et but in the woods. there is no in-between.
I didn’t know about Arne goes to space but now I desperately want to see it… That trailer is just wonderfully goofy
Aniara is amazing! Like really, it might not be quite a typical sci-fi story but it is really good. Also so confusing, Harry Martinsson makes up soo many words.
Absolutely worth reading!
Also, it does not rhyme. He uses a verity different meter throughout the book, few of which rhyme. A lot is free verse. Also the first 29 songs were apparently written under trance. It is truly a very, very strange book.
For a hint at what it’s like, I’d like to quote the second song (so no spoilers here, this is the beginning of the book)
Goldonder Aniara shuts, the siren gives the wail for field-egression by the known routine
and then the gyrospinner sets in towing
the goldonder upward to the zenith light, where
magnetrinos blocking field-intensity
soon signal level-zero and field-release occurs.
[…]Read the rest of the masterpiece at the internet archives!
It looks like if James Joyce lived in a slow-rotating space colony.
I can appreciate prose like that, but I personally don’t like reading “challenging” things when I’m reading for pleasure.
Judge Dredd, Threads, Lifeforce(Kind of) certainly supports the UK sci fi Idea. French scifi is a little more like EVERYONE ,good and Bad is turned on at all times. American sci fi is spot in,i can’t think of any counter evidence.
i can’t think of any counter evidence.
Pretty much anything written by Phillip K. Dick, for one.
EVERYONE ,good and Bad is turned on at all times
So what you’re saying is that French sci-fi is the most realistic of all fiction? 🤔
Heavy Metal, fifth element even Alien 4 spring to mind.
Nah, the American one is really just Strangers In A Strange Rant on Radical Polyamorous Misogynistic Libertarianism.
Vander Meer’s Big Book of Sience Fiction has countless stories that run at odds to the sentiment in this post.
Agreed I’d say the most famous sci-fi don’t touch on any of these but it is just a joke post I guess
Yeah I neglected to add that Vander Meer’s motivation for making the anthology was specifically to try and crush the preconception of Sci-Fi this post is a part of!
As someone who read more Honor Harrington than he should have, the American one is a bit on the nose.
“Time Enough for Love” by Robert Heinlein 😬 about a man that, basically, can live forever.
spoiler
He and his descendants live for so long, that sex loses meaning, and becomes some sort of “adult playtime” that he, inevitably, has with his actual children. Granted, the children are also like a thousand years old at this point too, but, still.
Lazarus Long? IIRC he’s also his own parents due to time travel shenanigans. During his early adulthood, he gets a one night stand pregnant and never sees her again. A couple hundred years later he transitions to a woman, for reasons, goes back in time, gets pregnant from a one night stand with a drifter. Both are him. Robert Heinline was a little messed up.
He started writing normal books again after having a brain tumour removed.
I never thought to meet someone else who read those.
Guilty pleasure, really.
I only wish the audio books were available in non-amazon sources.
