It is called the toxicity list if you weren’t toxic you don’t go on it I guess. Honestly IDK what the big deal is the mods and admins here love their big ban lists why is this particular one getting so much attention?

Because it was secretly implemented on people who had no means of knowing that their entire fediverse feed was being personally curated by a single individual.

It’s fine to ring fence your own personal instance - that’s the point of federation; but to secretly censor a front end client? Ffs.

Yea that isn’t how big ban lists work.

secretly implemented on people who had no means of knowing

Yea that is how shadow banning works.

being personally curated by a single individual.

        Mhmmm

Just seems like someone went a slight bit further than everyone else and somehow this is the worst possible thing ever it just doesn’t make sense.

It is not the worst possible thing but shadow banning via a client is quite ridiculous, even more so when politically motivated. I won’t even get into how funny it is to have even less of a tolerance for political variety than lemmy.ml.

If you really want to circle jerk, that is what instances are for where what is tolerated and what is not is much more transparent.

It wasn’t politically motivated tho it was ‘toxic people’ that were shadow banned you know “be awesome or else” right? That is how vibe modding works it’s fundamental to the fediverse experience.

This was a small step forward if you only have a problem with this but not all the steps that lead us here then you are pushing an agenda using the perceived political motivations, or you are just dumb.

toxic=people who don’t agree with me isn’t a very mature approach though is it? In my opinion what is fundamental to the fediverse is being able to discuss with people you don’t completely agree with. It is the more centralized social media platforms that repeatedly push content you like so that you get addicted to your echo chambers. If you don’t like your ideas being challenged I would suggest such places.

I don’t know, you seem rather supportive for someone who doesn’t advocate it.

In any case there is a world of difference between ban lists of instances and ban lists of an app. The latter is something one step shy of a centralized ban list for fediverse. Also ban lists in instances at least try to revolve around a set of rules (whether or not they succeed is another issue and will change from instance to instance), where as this one is just single person’s “don’t like this person because he didn’t agree with me” list imposed without any information or whatsoever on end users. It also doesn’t help with the optics that it looks hand curated…

I’ll try to summarise from memory and my knowledge from a couple of posts, but details might be wrong since I’ve not done a deep dive into this. I’m not going to go looking for links and references, because who has the time?

There was a frontend for Lemmy called Tesseract (I never used it, but a frontend is a different interface for the Lemmy site. I use Alexandtrie and think this is the best interface for desktop if you want to see what a frontend looks like). Anyway, it came to light that the dev for Tesseract had covertly added a blacklist to the frontend. He then wrote a long rant about how there’s propoganda and unpleasantness on Lemmy and he’s trying to protect his users from this. In reality he basically described how he wants to block anyone who isn’t agreeable with his opinion, expresses leftist opinions, supports LGBTQ+ rights, etc. So people have taken it as a badge of honour in being on the list and are making it a mockery of Tesseract. The dev has taken down the Github page for Tesseract (although I think someone forked it first and removed the blacklist). So now people are flooding Lemmy with memes about being on the list and hating on Tesseract. It’s all fun and games, but as with all things with social media trends, it will likely start getting boring as you come across a lot of this on your feed.

Depends what you define as fascist? Who’s the judge here? In the pre-elon twitter times people would call everything nazi/fascist that didn’t match their opinion. Basically you are threatening to murder people for… opinions? Coming from a place without death penalty this is indeed concerning. Especially when targeted at a certain person. TBH be happy you got banned and not jailed.

The situation would be the same if he also could block you for other users and instances without telling them.

Personally blocking a user on your account is fine Personally blocking a user from your admin is fine

Both those things use Lemmy tools and the modlog. Banning people with a secret shadowban malware list and distributing this malware to other instances is unethical.

I’m fairly certain this user is Admiral Patrick’s alt. He is in every thread not only defending but straight up lying.

I highly urge everyone to go take a look at the list. There’s lgbt communities and instances, small news orgs and even a word ban so your comment doesn’t show if it has “Epstein class” in it for example.

The app only showed you half the ban list, it hid the LGBTQ bans, users and comment stuff from what I understand.

Bro like every major account on this site is on that list, and most of them are chill and not toxic at all, just leftists.

Why would you trust the word of a developer that hid this list in a file that is downloaded after install, rather than the official blocklist in the git repo? Are you really that gullible?
