Yeah i had this recently in an ‘everyone needs to move off whatsapp’ topic. It just isnt practical and I would be commiting social suicide if I told everyone they could only talk to me on signal and uninstalled whatsapp.

Given how it’s downright unsafe to use these apps now although social pressure is recommended. If they want their grandkids pictures so bad they’ll figure it out or go without, you’re just trying to protect you and your family. You shouldn’t feel like you need to compromise that for people who don’t know any better or don’t care

The rest of the family followed relatively quickly. Family chat group has been going fire more than 10 years now.
I’ve lived in several authoritarian countries in which surveillance was constant and intense. I told my family and friends many years ago that I was using Signal and they could find me there. It’s literally the signature of my email. Then I proceeded to slow walk all personal non-Signal communications. I’ve found that starting various friend and family groups really helps people get immersed in the app. So does encouraging group video calls to hang out online.
For many years now I’ve had my entire family as well as dozens of friends on Signal. It’s not a quick process, but it can be done.
Even for professionals like lawyers, accountants, tradespeople, real estate agents, whatever. They’re all on Signal if they want to work with me.
Everyone can choose not to use the app. No guilt trips from me. I just use Signal daily, so if someone wants to finds me quickly, they always have the option to do so.
Same for any other sensitive info
You want me to help me with your finances? Passwords? Literally anything that can be used against us? Move your ass to Signal or you can find out yourself gam gam. Not like I won’t show you the very few and very incredibly simple steps to get started…

Isn’t that funny? They promised us all of these things are to prevent spam and misuse but the misuse never seems to be impacted in the slightest. There is occasional spam problems on the Fediverse but overall you’re less likely to have bot problems. I’m certainly interested in knowing what kind of tools will need to make sure this stays the case but we have structural incentives that line with our own interests and not those of Wall Street so we have a good chance

Yeah, I’m here because reddit didn’t value my use and made my favorite client no longer work. That’s it. However, if it weren’t that, it would have been one of the myriad of problems reddit had since then. Obviously, I do appreciate the federated aspect of Lemmy, but it wasn’t a consideration when I moved here.
Agreed, but OP’s comparison probably wasn’t representative of most people’s gripes with Reddit (blocking of API access for moderation and interactivity bots).
Lemmy has an open API, doesn’t universally block bot accounts or third-party tools, and has a bunch of different independent mobile clients – so the implication that it’s no better than Reddit on that front is bizarre.

At this point it’s completely reasonable to say that if somebody can’t get with the program then they’re going to need to communicate through an intermediary who does understand basic computer security. Social pressure is the only way that we’re going to get normal people to get on with the program so we need to make them feel like they’re the ones being annoying for refusing good security

When I was born both my grandfathers were either dead or a stroke made them nearly incommunicable. So I only had my grandmothers.
One infantalized me my entire upbringing. If I ever had to stay with her she would treat me like a small child even though I was between 8-13 years old. Forcing me to bed early, giving me little amounts of food, etc. Basically treating me like a house cat instead of her grandchild. My other grandmother tried to literally kidnap me from my parents, accusing my mother (who is a god damn angel to me and one of the best human beings I know) of being unable to raise me properly and that the ‘church’ would raise me better than she could.
I’m nearly 40. Only one grandmother still clings to life. I’ve hardly spoken to her in nearly 20 years.

I get where your mom is coming from, but if the 92 year old gamgams all over the rest of the world can use WhatsApp, your gamgam can use Signal with the right direction and patience. People don’t give enough credit to the elderly. They’re very capable, but just might need a little extra help to get there.
Logically someone had to set them up on WhatsApp. People of that age are the ones who struggle to understand that you have to connect your computer to the internet to use the browser, that you have to click double click the big blue E, that you have to turn the computer on before you can use it. Grandma just needs some tech support help

Fair. Humans have a really shitty, hard to repair design. How the fuck do you replace old pumps (hearts) when the immune system keeps attacking them? Not to mention the aging CPU.
Sadly the right to repair movement has been slow to work for humans. You really need to stick with the proprietary OEM parts, but MomCo refuses to provide them as “impossible”. There is some hope in bio 3D printed replacements reusing the cellular DRM recovered from a specific unit though.
A jailbreak to resolve the DRM and closed-ecosystem issues is always supposedly 10 or so years away, but like economically feasible fusion I am not sure I’d count on it any time soon.
