Computer scientists maybe. But real scientists know the meaning of the word average. And that out of, say, 1000 users, possibly only one is average.

Maybe the joke is that the comments would quibble over details that are fleeting in time and transcend operating systems instead.

Most people actually probably don’t know what an operating system is.

Just as accurately, the meme could be:

“[…] the average person probably only knows Android, iOS, Windows, and MacOS.”
    “And Linux, of course.”
    “Of course.”

Actually, the joke was that experts assume normies would know BSDs and Linux. The fact of it is, most normies don’t know any OS.

My point was that whomever edited the comic was actually overestimating the average person’s knowledge. They assumed normies know any OS, even the ones most folks use daily (Android or iOS).

The joke is that experts overestimate the normies, which they do, so it tracks.

It’s literally spelt out on the comic.

Correct. That is the joke. In the comic.

I’m saying that whomever modified this comic (which is about overestimating normies) overestimated the normies during the editing proccess, by skipping over Android and iOS (which implies that the editor assumed normies would know them).

            It’s sort of a meta-joke.

Still, a lot of people don’t think of computers as anything beyond “computer”, and wouldn’t be able to make that distinction.

With phones you’re lucky if they can differentiate between “Apple” and “Android” (with “Apple” meaning “like my phone” and “Android” meaning “weird Apple clone”). I remember in 2018/2019 we were filming something on our phones with an external mic and the person who provided the mics first smugly thought me an idiot and then was completely dumbfounded when I passed on a lightning to 3.5mm adapter for connecting the mic. Yes, this isn’t about operating systems. But it shows that there’s a kind of person that doesn’t consider tech being like anything beyond what their device is like

Its true, though. The number of clients that go silent when I ask what operating system they are running is staggering.

This is one of your primary tools for work, people. I feel it’s like a painter not knowing what different brushes are for, or a wood worker trying to plane a board with a sander. A professional should have a more than passing knowledge about how to use and maintain their tools. I’ll die on that hill.

IMO, a better analogy would be a painter who doesn’t know whether he’s painting on canvas, paper, or a wall.

Perhaps a better analogy is a painter who has no idea what their canvas is made out of; they know it’s a canvas, they know it’s for painting, they’re faintly aware they’re using some material stretched over a frame, but they just assumed a canvas is a canvas and they just never considered there might be other options than the one they’ve been getting.

Or ignoring the brand of the car you drive everyday. You don’t need to know how it works, just know enough to operate it safely.

I was just taking a walk through busy streets, and thought about how I’ve heard of unbranded high-quality clothes and tech for people that have money but no desire to see advertisement in their house, much less be a walking advert — but I’ve never heard of unbranded cars. All the pricey car marques display their logos eagerly, and especially the ‘executive’ cars’ logos are larger than others’.

In fact, it’s with really odd cars like retro-styled ones or obscure limited-production outfits, that I have to google as to what the hell I’m looking at. E.g. Morgan has their hood logo looking into the sky, might as well not be there at all.

I just want to say, to no one in particular…

Our ‘home’ MacBook was end of life / support recently (2017 intel). I backed up then nuked the OS and replaced it with Mint/Cinnamon.

My wife (who is very definitely NOT technical in any way) has embraced this and carried on with no issues so far, with FF and LibreOffice. It’s been nearly 6mo and no home IT support required.

Edit: I think the point I’m trying to make is: if she can crack on with most regular tasks that really boil down to browser + office tools, and not be overly bothered about what the OS is, then there’s hope for people to migrate - especially with how distros have become so accessible of late.

I mean, I had a 2011 Macbook with MacOS chugging along until early this year iirc, when the SSD croaked after another reboot due to power outage. I would probably still use it myself if not for the fact that Macbooks throttle the CPU when there’s no battery, since the power adapter can’t deliver peak power.

It has 16 GB of RAM, which is still the norm for laptops. Moreover, it actually supported higher RAM frequency than officially advertised, which I promptly exploited by buying said higher-freq RAM.

Okay but surely people get that BSD and Linux aren’t remotely the same thing, even though both are Unix-like and POSIX compatible, right?

They may be quite different under the hood … but when they both run much of the same open source software and even the same desktop environment, the actual difference that a user sees isn’t all that significant. From the perspective of a non-techie user, Linux and BSD could be practically indistinguishable.
