OP, we received a report on this post asking that it be tagged with a warning for violence. Could you do so (or mark it NSFW), please?

NSFW seems extreme. It’s violence, but not unsafe for work. There’s no blood or gore. We only truly know there’s harm done due to news reports. Marking it NSFW would mean the largest UK Lemmy instance would then not be able to see this UK content because of our stupid internet laws.

A violence tag would make sense though.

That clearly didn’t come out of nowhere. They were already arguing for some amount of time. I’d appreciate more context of what lead to that before I make any judgement.

That’s certainly a fact that it’s illegal; Almost no matter the context. It could be considered part of the broader environmental context. Like it’s not raining.

But I’m more looking for the actions of the three people involved, during the several minutes leading up to the head slamming. Longer possibly. Maybe one or more of them has a criminal history.

You aren’t? That’s odd. Who else would you side with?

You don’t need any more context than what’s in the video to know that this shitbag need the dildo of consequences to arrive unlubed and covered in sandpaper.

No context would make it okay. If the cyclist was a mass murderer who killed the man’s entire home town, it still wouldn’t be okay.

But while we can acknowledge it’s bad no matter what, we also might be able to understand his reaction reaction.

There’s an article, and it’s as I expected:

A Scottish motorist left a cyclist with a serious brain injury following a violent road rage incident in Edinburgh. Joseph Hedley became involved in a confrontation with cyclist Iain Brown before violently attacking the man without provocation at the city’s Cowgate in September 2024.

Why would you assume anything different?

I wouldn’t assume at all. That’s what everyone else is doing.

And the “without provocation” is almost certainly wrong. People don’t act like that without some internal reason. Better phrasing would be “without any known provocation”.

With the various responses, I get the impression that people assume any known reason would be a justification. As if reason itself is a justification. Of course that’s not true at all.

We know enough to know that nothing justifies that kind of response.

Honestly, I too would like to see the events leading up to it, but I accept that’s unlikely to happen. In my view, as soon as a driver gets out of their car to do anything except exchange details after a crash, they’ve lost any moral high ground regardless, if they had any in the first place.

You’re absolutely assuming, because you assume the article is wrong to make up your own interpretation of events.

Sometimes motorists are just jackasses that want to hurt cyclists. That’s a real thing that happens.

The article isn’t wrong. It never states any reason. It never makes an assumption beyond saying it was unprovoked. The article is quite factual realy.

It’s everyone else here who’s assuming the man’s state of mind, motivation, and sanity even. I’m not assuming you all are wrong. But I’m also not assuming any of you are right. Because the article has no information about your judgments.

Not to blame him. To understand why. Attacks like that don’t just happen in a vacuum.

Why were they stopped in the middle of the road? How long had they been arguing? What we’re they arguing about? Did they know each other prior to this encounter? Should there also be traffic tickets, in addition to the criminal charges? We know literally nothing about the event. Why is everyone satisfied with ignorance?

Attacks like that don’t just happen in a vacuum.

Right, they happen when entitled motor vehicle drivers feel disrespected. The cyclist may have even done something stupid beforehand that put everyone in that car in danger.

But it almost certainly doesn’t matter, because there is almost nothing that cyclist could have possibly done that would justify the violence in that video.

I think that’s why no one here seems to care.

I’d say there’s absolutely no justification. Even if the cyclist killed the man’s wife first, it wouldn’t justify it. But it would make it understandable.

As it is there’s no way to understand what happened. And everyone seems content assuming they do.

People don’t understand what actually happens when you get knocked out like that. They think it is like the movies. To actually get knocked out like that means you took some serious head trauma. Like in the hospital for 6 months trauma. That guy will go to prison, with the extra charge of the UKs equivalent to using a car as a weapon.

Hedley, from Kirkcaldy, Fife, subsequently found out police had put out an appeal to find the motorist involved and he handed himself into a local station two days later. Hedley pleaded guilty to assaulting Mr Brown to his severe injury, permanent impairment and to the danger of his life when he appeared at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Tuesday, September 22.

Most people don’t have any insurance to cover this precisely because the NHS will always pick up the bill. I’ve never heard of any criminal getting a bill for medical charges they’ve caused. Here in Germany, its all personal insurance - albeit strictly regulated. Maybe that’s how it works in France?

I got a super bad concussion when I fell and hit the back of my head on some concrete a while back. It took nearly three weeks for my symptoms to go away. I got really lucky I didn’t get anything more serious. We were concerned that I permanently damaged my occipital lobe because my visual issues were not improving. Thankfully I got better, but goddamn. I can’t imagine a brain injury as severe as that guy’s. It’s terrifying.

Understand the sentiment. I only ride on the little reserved infrastructure there is or on quiet roads. Motor vehicles still use the cycle path anyway, bicycle jousting seems like a solution when you get passed by an idiot on an electric scooter going 80 kph on a narrow path.

Actually, Yeah, I know exactly what you mean. I’m from Texas. I once witnessed a guy who took a lady cyclist right of way, nothing much you may say, but I got my gun out and shot a hole in the car’s motor the size of a bowling ball. An eye for an eye, thought him a lesson I tell you. Alas, this altercation was witnessed by the police, and I was arrested for aggravated assault. Seems the female cyclist didn’t have the right of way after all. I write these lines from prison, but I would still vote for Trump in a next election.

They’d back off, because people who use their cars to bully cyclists are extreme pussies. They only harass others when they think the other side is powerless.

Also, they probably won’t have the gun in their hands when they get out of the vehicle. Either they’d need to run back to get it, or draw from a concealed holster.

What most people fail to understand is that reaction is slower than action. If you draw first on the asshole, they’re not prepared. And before anyone argues, yes, driving up to a cyclist and then stomping towards them is a credible threat. And cyclists do sometimes find themselves in that situation because these drivers have fragile egos that they need to stroke.
