This doesn’t make sense. He can’t vote by proxy, so there’s no point in delaying. If anything, Republicans should want to hold the special as soon as possible, because the Kentucky governor gets to appoint a temporary replacement, and he’s a Democrat.
(I know this is just a meme, but I just don’t like poorly supported conspiracy theories.)

Massie is the other KY senator, not the governor. Andy Beshear is the governor, and he’s a Democrat.
A few months gives them time to purity test a few viable candidates and astroturf them to the voters.

I remember a few years ago, the Japanese PM Shinzo Abe, resigned from his position due to a chronic health condition that was worsening. He resigned of his owned accord and made a public statement saying that he’s stepping down because he did not want to make any major political or policy mistakes that would compromise the welfare of the nation. He was only 65 at the time, but still had the humility to recognize the weight of his position.
Meanwhile, we have 80+ year old dinosaurs that are brain dead and on life support that are still clinging on to power to their very dying breath regardless of the harm it does to the nation. Nancy Pelosi, Mitch McConnell, Clarence Thomas, Maxine Waters, Eleanor Holmes Norton, and the list goes on and on. It’s time for all of them to fuck off. Even Bernie Sanders needs to go. I think the actual process is lost on a lot of people. Apparently there is no process to remove McConnell while he’s alive unless he resigns. Meaning if he’s on life support there’s nothing anyone can do. His seat just remains as is. I honestly think no one knows what’s going on with him. Apparently according to sources he’s been in a coma for 3 full weeks.
im pretty sure its the other way around; If they hold out for 1 more month, they have to have a special election. If they don’t hold out for a month, the governor (who is a democrat) gets to appoint someone.
afaik it’s by election only now to fill a vacant senate seat from kentucky. the republicant super-majority in that state legislature passed a law that took the governor, including the sitting 2-term democrat, out of that process.
Yup, they passed it specifically last April to stop Beshear from appointing anyone.
Now, TECHNICALLY this might garner a challenge in the state Supreme Court - it didn’t amend the state constitution, which says the governor can appoint for vacant seats.

A quick look at his Wikipedia page tells me he wasn’t a good guy, but this is still sick. My stomach twisted a little when I read this.
He’s as responsible for all the bad shit and Trump as Reagan was. His life was used to commit misery, especially in office. He would laugh or smile bringing up how people would suffer. Just to name a few egregious examples of his contributions as a senator, he’s responsible for blocking Obama’s appointment of Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court in 2016 because 8 months was “too close to an election.” Yet, he’s also responsible for rushing through trump’s SC appointment with less than 3 months to spare before the 2020 election. In other words, McConnell’s inconsistent and ideologically-biased application of non-existent rules is directly responsible for the 6-3 conservative majority on the Scotus which has done so much harm including but not limited to letting trump walk free of his crimes and granting him this phony “presidential immunity,” among other atrocious distortions of the constitution as written.
Oh, and McConnell is also directly responsible for refusing to convict trump in 2021, in the aftermath of Jan6.

McConnell’s seat was secured by election tampering the whole time. So Kentuckians didn’t vote for him, but they “voted” for him.

Maybe there’s a key detail about the electoral process that I’m missing, but what’s the practical difference between holding a special election now or waiting till the regular election?
How does it benefit republicans to avoid the special election? The people voting would still be the same, no? And the candidates too, presumably?
Because polling currently suggests that there’s a bug leftward shift in American politics coming. If the special election were to happen now, there’s a non-zero chance that the GOP would lose the seat to a Dem.
Hiding McConnell’s death would mean that, even though he wouldn’t be voting, the Dems wouldn’t get an additional vote in the Senate early.

Yeah, but if Dems would win the seat in a special election, then they’ll win it in November too. I don’t see how they expect there to be a difference, unless they just want to delay the inevitable until next session. But Dems won’t take back the house until then anyway, so it seems kinda moot.
I think they’re just panicking and can’t make rational decisions because they’re desperate to hold onto power. Maybe also because of the turmoil of selecting a new majority leader this close to an election?
They’re attempting to pass bills that suppress Dem turnout and help them win this November. The timing matters for what they want to do.

You’re right, it is delaying the inevitable. But legislation is still being written right now. Policy is still being debated right now. Having an additional Dem in the Senate early could sway other moderate GOP members on the fence to vote against bills being touted by more extreme members of their party.
Sure, by pure numbers and inevitability, it doesn’t matter on paper. But it does matter because there’s more nuance and interpersonal politicking happening that the general public may or may not be privy to. Every backslide in seats or power could set off a cascade of changes. Nothing happens in a vacuum on Capitol Hill.
Yeah so much is in flux right now that I wouldnt be surprised if the think tanks are on the case trying to find the best way to keep the seat red. They already stole the governor’s power in this regard iicc.

I was just reading up on the special election rules for Kentucky. They were recently changed - it used to be the governor would appoint someone who had to be a member of the same political party. Now it’s a special election for a person from any political party. So what you’re saying is correct: it’s possible a dem wins and there are slimmer margins in the senate.
Its the difference between no vote and an unfavorable vote. If they loose his seat their margins shrink. I would love to see some blue filibuster from that fucker’s seat.

We’ve seen countless times that officials, whether elected or appointed, will cling onto power until we pry it from their cold dead hands.
We really need to implement age caps as well as term limits, since we can’t count on elected officials being pressured into retirement by their own peers, nor can we count on the voters primarying them since it means losing the incumbent advantage.
Sadly, as with much of political reform, the status quo serves those who are in office, so there’s not much motivation to implement such legislation, and the public is not great at organizing over secondary matters.
