Windows 11 has given me no issues whatsoever. I’m not apologizing for having a great experience.

Different strokes for different folks - windows 11 does have it’s uses.

Ever since our office laptops “upgraded” they’ve made excellent space heaters during the winter. Open up Teams, a PowerPoint, and a YouTube video and you’ve got a nice toasty office!

It’s hilarious that you people can’t even conceive of someone actually enjoying Win11. Like some kind of mental block for you or something.

People with trash taste generally don’t like being told their taste is trash. But if you like using garbage, by all means, feel free to keep having a subpar experience. And I’m not even a Linux evangelist, I just support windows systems for a living.

Win11 is a trash OS made to spy on you, make your data easier for criminals to steal, and serve you ads. If that’s your thing, keep using it and enjoy I guess. I’d rather stay on actually good versions of windows, but security patches are important.

I can’t conceive of people wanting to glue fake plastic eyelashes on their eyelids and not think it makes them look like a circus clown.

Yet people do that all the time.

Yeah, and even if you’re using Arch BTW, you’re not using it correctly! Why would you install a fully featured DE? Don’t you know how many dependencies that introduces to your custom built super slick OS? Come on, just use I3! Writing basic functionallity like a shutdown menu yourself isn’t that bad!

Arch promoters are the worst. I believe anyone suggesting Arch to convert people are Windows/Mac marketing. If you already use Linux, then Arch could be useful for you. But anyone even remotely new or experienced but more interested in using their computer rather than configuring an OS shouldn’t get an Arch recommendation.

I don’t really ever see anyone promote Arch. People have this hard on for hating on Arch users that’s based on decade-old preconceptions, and they somehow perpetrate them without substance.

I’m actually the opposite on this because I agree. I use Arch (btw) but I’m also aware this is not the OS for the uninitiated. Arch users who suggest it for the jumping off point from Windows are: a) dicks, and b) delusional in thinking this is a reasonable UX, and c) they are actually giving Arch a bad name by suggesting it inappropriately.

I use Arch (still, btw) because I want the bleeding edge on many things, I actually prefer the shell for most admin tasks, and it lets me fully customize my install, not installing any bloat I don’t want. But I’m also very comfortable with Linux and have used various other distros before this one for decades.

When a friend asks me which Linux flavor, I try to take into account their use case. Gaming only? Bazzite, SteamOS, or maybe Mint. Productivity? Ubuntu, OpenSUSE, Mint. Power user ready for Arch? They probably already know and I don’t need to tell them.

I don’t ever see people promoting Arch to convert users from Windows. Plenty of Arch-based distros though, like Garuda, CachyOS, Bezzite, or (not really recommended, but an example) SteamOS. There are lots of great distros based on Arch that come bundled with all the packages most users will need. Arch is just for the users that want to remove every last bit of stuff they don’t need and handle it all themselves so they have exactly the minimum they want, which only has minor utility and is not good for new users who don’t even know what exists.

Plenty of Arch-based distros though, like …, Bezzite,

Bazzite (assuming typo, Bezzite doesn’t look to be an os based on a cursory search) is fedora blue based, not arch based. There looks to be a Bazzite flavor based on arch, but the main OS is not to my knowledge.

My problem with Linux, that is getting better, is that it has largely catered to power users. Simply put most users either aren’t, or don’t care to be, tech savvy. And that is fine actually, because that means they have other things they are interested in and care more for.

Things like SteamOS are catering more towards casual users with a bunch of built in compatibility features that means games work like they do on windows. Making it easier for casual users to make the jump. Now rather than having to know you need 57 compatibility layers (This is exaggeration for effect, yes I have to point this out because I have had some people get pissy at me for doing this) to get things to work like they should they are all neatly bundled together and you have Valve’s promise that they will work here.

Because of the SteamDeck many people were introduced into the world of Linux. Without many of them even realizing that they were using it at first. Add on the fact that it just works for the games people actually want to play and you have a good shot at tackling Windows.

I’m sorry to power users but you just don’t decide what the market cares about really. It’s the casual users, there is just so many more of them that they get to decide what operating systems are supported.

Linux has massively been dumbed down to allow people like you to use it. Which was a mistake. It was never meant for gamers or people eating their crayons. The fact that some toy vendor decided to build their vending machines on it has nothing to with Linux or its prinary user base. So stop complaining that not everybody is as lazy and as willfully ignorant as you. You’re tolerated but not welcome. I hope this is an adequate reply to this thread’s title and OP.

“If you don’t like Linux you’re just a troll” is the EXACT energy OP is talking about. Y’all are insufferable. Linus Torvalds is incredibly well known for being a dick because “what I think is right is most important” and that toxic attitude is what keeps most people from giving Linux a second look.

But totally, people hating on Linux are just trolls. Let me guess, you use Arch? You’re always the most obnoxious.

That’s the thing, many people don’t know there is anything else and don’t realize “their” machines have slowly slid out of order to the point of not “working” anymore.
When I don’t tell someone I know that using a computer does not have to be painful, it feels like an act of cruelty. That only applies to people I know IRL, I feel like most of Lemmy at least knows about Linux. In any case, if anything I’d say the tendency to mention Linux comes from a genuine intention of helping

Sure, if you’re in a space where people aren’t technologically proficient that’s fair. But this behavior is most prevalent here on lemmy, and i seriously doubt anyone who has managed to find their way to this platform doesn’t know that linux exists. It just becomes real insufferable real fast.
