We are definitely in an era where people just want to feel powerful or in control and will ignore any level of atrocities to that end. And it’s easy to lie to yourself. Because you will say what you want to hear.

10% of the population is still getting everything it could want and the lies that its all worth it. I don’t know how we retrigger empathy though in a world of manufactured apathy.

Everyone is getting into these nuances (like, the goggles can be unclipped.) But if you know you are going on to a goddamn airplane, why would you wear any of this big bulky shit in the first place? You’re limiting your ability to move in a crowded space. You know he doesn’t have a gun because he went through TSA (because those guys are super accurate and professional, right?) so this “bad guy” could just start crawling over seats to try to get past you and get off the plane, meanwhile you’re stuck in the aisle like a turtle on its back with your Ya’ll Queso beer belly and all your big boy GI Joe gear.

It makes them feel powerful and cool, that’s it. They’re insecure, broken, pathetic, childish man-babies who need that gear to feel that they’re in charge. It’s not about what’s useful and logical, it’s about them psychologically needing it and also thinking it makes them look threatening.

It’s not just that. More people need to know about how escalation works. Yes, there’s a strong tactical advantage to being more prepared than your adversary. At the same time, you have to consider what the opposition will do to attack/defend when confronted with superior numbers, weapons, and body armor; they’ll likely try to match that force as much as they can. Since it’s a space filled with civillians, this ramps up the risk of the operation tremendously (e.g. take a hostage or get dissapeared). They would have done much better to dress like typical cops without all the tac gear. Yanno, de-escalating the situation rather than the opposite. The passengers on this plane should be pissed.

Remember when they mag dumped the UPS truck in FL and killed hostage, suspect, and bystander all at the same time? As long as they get to use their toys, anything approaching ROE or tactical plans beyond “shoot everyone and sort it out later” are just a waste of their time since no one penalizes the behavior.

Some human monkeys will reach for higher goals, like knowledge and/or a truer sense of community to what we have.
Some human monkeys will get mesmerized by shiny bling, which on an intellectual level is an equivalent to rubbing feces on themselves and flashing their teeth.

There’s a painting from WWI, done by a German artist, can’t remember the name, but it’s like a portrait of your generic military general. You cannot see the body nor the face, it’s all covered in hundreds of meaningless badges and medals.
We still see this bullshit today in any official picture from a Pyongyang parade, just look at the generals standing beside the “dear leader” or whatever they call him.

These stunted mindless grunts on the airplane are a reflection of man’s failure to transcend the goddamned swamp from which we came.

In my town they’ve been setting up the occasional night time check points to stop everybody entering town and check them to make sure they’re “not up to anything bad.” Given the slave-owning history of my area, I think the cops are trying to finish the establishment of my county as a Sundown area.

It is never illegal to film cops in the US unless you are breaking another law in order to do it (ex: filming their tiny peepee by zooming into their bedroom window). If they are in public or in any private place where you are not trespassing, you can film.

What insane place do you live in that holding a camera constitutes as terrorism?

Oh believe me, I wasn’t praising the US. I think “burn it down and try again” is becoming a more viable option for political reform every day.

But no country on earth should have a law that can be interpreted in such a way that a citizen can be charged with terrorism for holding a camera. That’s not “more strict,” that’s runaway oppression.

Sorry if I didn’t explain correctly. Holding the camera is not considered terrorism. As I said is legal (but sharing the recording is not), but the police can tell you to stop recording and take your device, also legal. Once they’re not being recorded, if they beat you up (high probability specially if there’s not many people around) they’ll justify it by saying you attacked them first, which is the part that can be considered terrorism.

I haven’t seen, personally, this happening for recording them, but I have for other things like trying to stand by your rights during a search, intervening when they where harassing someone, asking for their badge number (legally should be visible, and they have to tell you if not. But usually doesn’t end up well)… This is Spain, but I’ve heard stories about the Italian, French, German, many east European countries’… polices and they doesn’t seem much better.

America is fucked and what you said happens here too but mostly people get away with filming police as it technically is legal and that’s been backed up by courts here. Buuuuut police will try to tell you it’s not allowed or could consider it “impeding an investigation” if they want to be dicks. Cops here have virtually unlimited power to do what they want, they show up armed and in numbers so not much one can do to fight back.

But seriously whatever country in the EU you’re from that’s absolutely wild they would make it illegal to film police in a public space. Well, wild to me maybe not to others.

Most cops have some kind of tactical gear kept in the trunk of their car. They don’t mess with it for each call they grab and go.

I’d rather have them wear night vision for nothing than spend an extra 10 minutes fucking around in the parking lot to not.

But I do agree with the main point of the post. Clothing plays a part in our psyche. If you dress sharp you’ll act sharp. If you dress slopply you’ll act sloppy. If you dress like a soldier you’ll act like one, and that usually isn’t what cops should be doing. Hammers seeing nails and all that.

It always embarrassed Samuel Vimes when civilians tried to speak to him in what they thought was “policeman.” If it came to that, he hated thinking of them as civilians. What was a policeman, if not a civilian with a uniform and a badge? But they tended to use the term these days as a way of describing people who were not policemen. It was a dangerous habit: once policemen stopped being civilians the only other thing they could be was soldiers.

Point blank, cops shouldn’t have swat gear or be treated as a paramilitary group. They’re supposed to protect and serve. Cops shouldn’t be a tactical force, they should be public servants.

Then send in a tactical unit for those situations that is specifically trained for the situation. We’ve seen how police handle those situations and I really don’t feel like escalation is the best approach for guys who can’t be bothered to do their job in the first place, let alone be properly trained and ready for a tactical de-escalation. Fuck off with the excuses for these fucking pigs.

Okay so ordinary police are out. You’re in charge of this new tactical unit, what does it look like? Where is the line between a ordinary response and a tactical response? What gear/technologies would they have as default and what would they have access to?

I’m not trying to be a dick, I’m truly curious because if we want reform we have to have a goal to reach. Change is cool but change to what?

Police should be there to cordon off the area for a tactical response in these situations, then negotiators communicate while a properly trained and equipped tactical team prepares a response and infiltration plan with the intent of non lethal response and a contingency for lethal action if the perp escalates it to that level, this part would be something like snipers, who’s first priority would be observation, keeping watch until they get a signal. Planning would be situational, as there is no universal outline for these situations. The job of the police in a tactical response situation should be crowd control, everything else is above their expertise.

For a lot of stuff that would work I think. But it also sounds a lot like how they used to respond to active shooters back in the late 90s. Terrorists used to hijack or take hostages to negotiate political demands, not just try to kill people.

So in that case that plan isn’t great when people are helpless inside while waiting on a tactical team. That’s why Uvalde caused such an outcry against the police response. They were crowd control when they had every chance to engage the shooter. You’re right, there’s no perfect plan for everything. I do think a negotiate/deescelate approach would be very helpful

The way it currently works for departments around here is their SWAT guys do ordinary patrols but they have extra training and gear to respond to tactical stuff too. I wonder if we could do the same for the other side of the spectrum and have some officers with extra training as negotiators?

A state set up tactical response team that was trained and prepared for the situation solves that problem entirely. Less funding for militarized police and just transfer that funding to a tactical response outfit. You’re acting like doing something new is simply impossible when it’s realistically the only logical conclusion, the funding and supplies are there already it’s just being used on complete bullshit.

It’s not about fighting for “my (twisted) view” of a fair world. It’s about me finally having the chance to act upon my wet dreams of power and cosplaying as the ‘badass’ image I always wanted to be, and how empowering it is to be able to pick on the weak.

I bet you, these are only ‘cosplaying’ as elite soldiers fighting an imaginary war because cosplaying as superman or batman would be far too obvious and non-threatening in real life - seriously, who wouldn’t laugh at these clowns who think they’re serious shit? Otherwise you’d absolutely see the barely-laughable Justice League or the wannabe Avengers going down the street dishing out ‘justice’ cartoon-style.

Peace and Justice are only as strong as the willingness to recognize and punish those who break the rules. If there’s no consequences for breaking the law all of those pretty values aren’t worth anything, and anarchy ensues.

The military is often far better trained and disciplined and follow their rules and guidelines and can actually shoot what they aim at and don’t mag-dump a random car when a squirrel drops an acorn on it.

You can be a cop with a high-school diploma and a few weeks of training, and it’s almost impossible to get booted from the industry once you’re in.

Even fewer requirements for ICE and the other goon squads who are cosplaying all over the place right now.

The military has its own issues but also built its own prison. If you fuck up bad enough you go to Leavenworth for a long stay whereas all these shitbags with hand me down MRAPs get a month of paid leave and the city they work for pays out restitution to people who’ve been horribly wronged while they clock insane overtime and moonlighting checks using the badge for profit.

Police you’re looking at police at least ostensively.

Presumably you have an entire brain inside that skull of yours and it would be a shame not to use it

If there’s one place you don’t need to be armored, it’s arresting someone on a plane. Everyone has already been screened by security and even their nail clippers have been confiscated.
