      I will never understand how an Iowa farmer could have been okay with him. They literally depend on (usually illegal) migrant work. They can’t afford to pay minimum wage, but here they are, once again.

        I’m less sure about the migrant worker in Iowa’s case. I think Iowa is mostly corn and soy, which have been machine-picked-and-processed for close to 100 years now. I’m sure that some migrant labor is being used, but one automated combine can pick A LOT of corn in a day.

        I don’t live in Iowa but have a small farm and live surrounded by farmers and ranchers. You have to understand that these people have the tiniest of perspective to the world. They spend almost their entire lives on one property, rarely go anywhere due to the nature of farming, and constantly have right-wing radio on in the truck and the barn and fox news on at home. You combine that with limited education across multiple generations and you have a group of people perfectly suited to consistently buy into propaganda and almost never able to identify things that will eat their face in the end.

              Yeah. Without a state apparatus that has a monopoly on violence to enforce contracts, the person with the biggest army gets what they want. And guess who would end up with the most power in that sort of situation? Billionaires.

              It’s a fast track back to feudalism. I’ve seen someone here refer to it as “Immortan Joe fantasies” and I thought that was pretty apt (Immortan Joe is the villain in Mad Max: Fury Road).

                It’s surprising how many people still operate on the concept of temporarily embarrassed millionaires ($100 million dollars in current value). This is not the vast majority of us, and never will be. It’s like when my dad would talk about the “death tax” which is pretty much a thing…if you have over $10 million in your estate and a whole bunch of other caveats. He never had that before he died, and I didn’t look into the details of the inheritance tax before he died, either.

                Canada’s current version of the death tax is the capital gains tax change…which is something like an additional $13k if your income is over $300k of capital gains. And people respond with, “But what if I sell my house?” If your house is your primary residence (and you owned it for at least a year), it’s tax free. If it isn’t, it only matters if it appreciated by $300k, and again I think you can handle the extra $13k.
