Lemmy doesn’t have any competitors, it isn’t competing. It isn’t what you think it is. You are still using a corporate framing for a non corporate system. There is no company, there is no manger, there is no goal. This measurement is only to say 35k people are using it now, but it doesn’t matter is my entire point. “Lemmy” is a federated network for enthusiasts with no corporate direction that is still in early development. There is no competitor, growth isn’t the purpose of it, it is software made by communists.

MAU is a number that matters to corporations and advertisers. No one running a Lemmy server is either of these so that metric isn’t really useful or say anything.

Lemmy has been going for 6 years now and it is still new. It isn’t even version 1.0. Success in Lemmy is not what you think it is. The most successful Lemmy server is Hexbear because it stands alone and is growing the community they want.

I’m starting to think the Fediverse has the wrong focus. We keep talking about growing MAU and promoting “the Fediverse” as if it’s a product, but that’s backwards. Before Reddit and Twitter, niche communities grew around websites like fansites, blogs, and tools that happened to have a forum attached. People came for the content, and stayed for the conversation.

So instead of just telling people to join Lemmy or Mastodon or promoting sports on Lemmy, we should embed Fediverse features into purpose-built websites. That creates a feedback loop: the site promotes the community, and the community fuels the site. You can build out unique features like scoreboards, event calendars, or curated resources and then use Lemmy threads as the discussion layer. Some users will interact directly on the site, while others can subscribe via their own Fediverse client. Everyone wins.

That’s exactly what I’m trying to do with Vegan Home Cooks. I’m syncing Lemmy posts into the site, but I’m also building out original features beyond just the forum. The goal is for the site to be the thing people discover and remember, with federation as the invisible engine underneath. I’m still figuring out the recipe for success, but I think this model has more potential than evangelizing Lemmy.

Lemmy just isn’t what you think it is. The monthly user count doesn’t matter. If people wanted reddit content they would just go to Reddit. Lemmy is a replacement for the small scale human authored forums of the 2000s. Reddit killed them with embrace, extend, extinguish. Lemmy isn’t a replacement for Reddit, it is a replacement for the thing Reddit extinguished.

I don’t care about reddit posts and traditional social media. If I did I would just use that. I use reddit to moderate and participate in my small community with a few posts a week and I think it is going well.

You are crazy if you don’t believe the USA is an authoritarian country. The leader who rules by decree (I mean executive order) is literally Donald fucking Trump. You have gangs of paramilitary police murdering innocent people, you have had a massive build out of surveillance technology without asking anyone, the elections are all fixed, there are more billionaires there than anywhere else on earth yet millions of people are hungry, the schools have been defunded, and you project military power around the world and killed millions of people in the past 20 years.

People on Lemmy are extremely annoying and refuse to use block lists to tailor their experiences and instead engage in endless circlejerks. The people who need to police the tankies are the worst of the worst.

US elections are not by popular vote, it is by district vote and the districts are redrawn every election cycle giving the ability to rig the elections. This is by design to maintain slavery and is still used today. Even if every undecided voter in California voted for Kamala and she had 2 million more votes than Trump, Like Hilary did, she would have still lost.
