“Sorry, I got to return this video”
“Mike? I love that guy, I got him on speed dial”
“Do you have any quarters for a phone?”
“Bill Cosby really is America’s dad”
“Can I borrow that VHS?”
“Sorry, I can’t come. My favourite show is on”
“Do you know where a phone is?”
I’m looking forward to Matt Groenig’s new show.
Disenchanted probably had that response
I remain unconvinced.
Can you turn the antenna to ___ insert satellite name ___ ?
For context
where I grew up, almost every immigrant houshold had a satellite antenna, to watch channels across the world. Since my parents were immigrants, we had to turn the antenna each time we wanted to watch either local news or news from our country of origin.
“Antenna”? Don’t you mean “dish”?
Yes I know that dish antennas are antennas, but I’ve never heard of anyone calling them just “antennas”.
yeah… dish … thank you …
English isn’t my first language, and I never used that word in a sentence to remember it.
Being a little literal, but I can guarantee someone has said 1, 3, 5, and 7 in the past twenty years. Heck, probably the last year.
Payphones are still a thing in some places and get used - I started doing a thing involving them a yearish ago (it’s in my post history if anyone really cares). Literally had someone ask “Hey, are you done with that phone?” as I was jotting down its number, which was shocking. Can confirm where I am they still take coins (it’s 50 cents now, unless you’re calling a toll-free number).
VHS is making a … come back isn’t really the right word, but there’s a small number of folks interested in what’s on old tapes they find and some hobbyists swap stuff. And there are still a few video rental places around (though really, really rare - or near places like campsites, catering to folks with cars that still have DVD players or households with spotty internet).
It’s all still disappearing, no doubt, but not 100% dead yet.
I’ll be back in five moons, we’re running out of mammoth meat (translation)

Back when common decency mattered, before 9/11,
I can’t believe gas is over $2 a gallon now.
I still say that all of the time. Along with I can’t believe gas is over $1 a gallon now.
“What do you think about John Kerry?”
I lost one of my Diablo install CDs can i borrow your set
It’s 2004
Happy new year 2005!
Surly there were always people who say things like “wow, I can’t believe this thing is happening it’s like it’s 2004” or something.
“it’s literally the year two thousand and four”
“Damn, Cindy Crawford is hot!”
Go ahead, look up photos of her now, age isn’t doing her former beauty very well…
She’s almost 59 years old, and looks damn good for her age.
I did, and I would still say that. You wouldn’t happen to have her confused with Rep. Cindy Crawford, the Arkansas politician?
If you’re looking at the Wikipedia article, that photo was from like a decade ago. Age is catching up with her…
I was looking at Insta posts from August. Difference of opinion, I guess.
That’s the problem with beauty isn’t permanent. It happens to everyone from Madonna, Dick Van Dyke and Lynn Neilson. This doesn’t apply to everyone tho. Tom Cruise, Scarlett Johansson and Dewayne “The Rock” Johnson have manage to be exceptions to this rule although it’s much easier for men to do. In general women aren’t really allowed to age. Even if there looks aren’t important. I remember when the election was happening and people were dunking on Kamara Harris for having wrinkles like she isn’t a woman in her 60’s.
For some people looking good is literally their job and cost is no object when you’re rich.
There’s also a non-financial cost to keeping up with beauty standards via plastic surgery. Madonna is a perfect example. As soon as someone gets a facelift the ageing-clock speeds up and repeated lifts have diminishing returns until a person is left with an unexpressive piece of pleather for a face. Michael Jackson’s nose was also a good example of such issues.
Yeah but the cost to not looking like you’re aging is going from descending a hill to falling off a cliff and landing much lower
2024 photo. I still wouldn’t kick her out of bed for eating crackers.
Ska is forever!
Blackberry and Nokia will always be around.
Hand me my Razor
People who want to shave still say this sometimes.
2004 Nokia bricks are probably still around. Them things were indestructible.
Ska is forever, though.
“Ska is what plays in a 13-year-old kid’s head when he gets extra mozzarella sticks”
“Jared from Subway is such an inspiration!”
“No body ever got fired for choosing IBM”
I ironically said that when I was working for IBM.
They don’t actually fire, they do “performance improvement plans”.
Ah yeah, the classic PIP’d manoever. I worked with a few good guys who got
fired without causePIP’d and let go even though their performance was fineBeen at Facebook 4 years? Not management? Get ready for the PIP.
Yeah, aka we want to RIF but are too cheap to pay severance.
I borrow movies sometimes from the library, I’ve used that first one. (Sometimes you want a DVD of a kid’s show instead of streaming it)
Also: looking for a phone, any phone in our house has happened.
Why would you want a DVD over streaming it?
If you borrow a DVD from the library for free you don’t need to pay for whatever streaming service is holding that particular film hostage, if it’s even available at all. And if it’s a Blu-ray Disc it will have better picture quality than a compressed stream. Making copies is also very easy if you have a computer with a drive, and doesn’t require paying for a VPN to avoid facing the risks of online piracy.
Not everything is available on streaming. Even things that are available might not be on the services they have subscribed to. Also, while DVDs often have a “play all” option, you can typically play a single episode, and it will stop when it’s over, which is pretty useful for helping to limit how long the kids are watching TV.
If you don’t want to sail the high seas, and you don’t want to pay, the library is a great, free option.
DVD’s are dog shit though. They break really easily, those ungodly annoying ads at the beginning and the amount of space they take. Streaming just beats DVD’s 10-to-1.
They were also talking about a kids show, maybe for some backseat entertainment on a long drive with limited cell reception and/or data? Or maybe the kids have an old TV at home with a DVD player and no smart features?
And Blu-ray beats them both.
You don’t need quality to watch paw patrol in the car or on a plane. A cheap portable DVD player does wonders for sanity while traveling without needing to dedicate and pre load a tablet with kids stuff.
Young kids, you want the least amount of confusion and you don’t want to buy them a tablet that you have to maintain/load up with videos to watch.
Eventually there are better options, but there was a window of age that DVDs made all the sense.
