Not playing in the street is a sacrifice?! LMAO!

Fuck airports for not letting children play on the tarmac!

    😂

Kids would actually play in quiet neighborhood streets or cul-de-sacs and the like. Drivers would drive slower because they knew kids would be playing, and kids would all get out of the way when one of them heard or saw a car.

      “Street Hockey” was a thing.

I’m not sure exactly why, but it’s not really a thing anymore. Seems like there are more cars and the quiet neighbourhood streets are more likely to be considered “shortcuts” these days. And where I live, there’s little traffic enforcement, so rather than driving the speed limit (or less in areas where kids might be playing), people are happily speeding while playing with screens and devices in their cars.

There are a lot of reasons, but more cars on the road making playing on the road less viable is definitely a factor

Again, playing on roads shouldn’t be a thing. There is a reason why cars aren’t allowed to drive through playgrounds.

            Fucking common sense.

Cars don’t drive through playgrounds because that would be dangerous for the playground equipment and the children and adults in there.

So kids playing on roads shouldn’t be a thing because kids are dangerous to cars and the road infrastructure?

              That’s not a good analogy.

When kids don’t have any other places to go? Yes I’d say it’s a sacrifice. There’s no reason for quiet suburban streets to have speeds as high as 50km/h, which can kill kids if they get hit, especially by oversized american trucks and SUVs.

Kids have plenty of places to play. Stop making shit up so you can feel like you’re making a point. It’s fucking stupid to think kids should be playing in streets!

Ffs. You people are entirely out of arguments to make if this is a hill even worth fighting over.

kids have plenty of places to play

Like where? Where’s the nearest public access park or football pitch or playground that a kid can wander into any time of day to play with their friends?

No. LMAO! I don’t. I don’t even want to do the pre-stretching workout before attempting the mental gymnastics required to connect those dots.

Kids shouldn’t play in streets because of traffic. For there to be no traffic, there’s would need to be no cars. If there are no cars, there’s be no need for streets for them to play in. If there were no streets for kids to play in, you’d probably whine about that and find a way to blame some other dumb shit for the lack of stress for kids to play in.

And before tighter and say this is the point…. Bullshit. That isn’t even remotely what this ridiculous meme is saying. It’s a pure example of not thinking before you assume you have a point.

Streets existed way before cars so if anything, there shouldn’t be car traffic because of kids playing in the streets

You really have a problem with cause and effect. I can tell. And that’s too much for me to tackle to be honest. I don’t want to have to explain how conversational nuance works just to talk this out, so- let’s pretend you know what is even being discussed and simply agree to disagree.

    This is a outrage.

I live near a school. There’s a raised crossing on the road outside it, like a speed bump with a zebra crossing. I have to go like 40 km/h when crossing it, and it’s quite comfortable and smooth but it slows me down a bit.

Those kids should send me money.

Now now. Thanks to kids we all have to be reminded to buckle our seat belts and not leave children in hot vehicles. Soooo many excessive beeps and safety equipment for the children. Won’t you think of the mildly inconvenienced drivers?

Majority of those are largely solved with good city planning and other regulations around cars, including a healthy amount of drivers ed as well as actually taking away people’s license for repeated or severe offenses (note I said or, not and - either one should be enough). I drive a car, so does pretty much everyone else on my street, and yet children do play on the street, much like we did 25 years ago when I was a kid here (there are fewer kids, but that’s a different issue entirely, we’ve had low birth rates since the 90s or 00s). Keys: Narrow street, very few American style pickup trucks (There’s an Amarok someone on the street uses as a work car and that’s literally it). The speed limit is technically 50 km/h because there’s no specific speed limit set on this street and it’s not marked as a “living street”, yet you almost never see anyone go that fast. We don’t even have a speed bump because it’s just not been necessary. Both entries into the street have you come in at low speed.

Both here in my small town and in the country in general, it’s fairly common to walk or bike to school. Usually the main thoroughfare of any suburb or town has a wide sidewalk on one or both sides, and side streets tend to be narrower and potentially limited to 20 or 30 km/h and since there’s often no sidewalk on those, the DEFAULT assumption is that there will be pedestrians and cyclists you share the road with. The law also states that in close proximity to pedestrians, you have to slow down to near-pedestrian speeds (not exactly defined and since cops love giving out tickets, you’d better err on the safe side).

Air quality will be a mostly solved issue once EVs are as cheap to buy as used diesel cars too, they’re certainly cheaper to run already if not accounting for purchase cost. Petrol doesn’t pollute nearly as badly locally as diesel does, it’s worse for global warming though (CO2 tends to be higher). But for now of course it is indeed sad we breathe in toxic fumes.

As for play at night, that’s just illegal here, kids have a curfew starting at 11 PM (or midnight in the summer), after which they can only be outside with their parents or guardians. Like… let’s be honest, do you want your kids out without an adult after that time? Even if there’s no cars, guess what else a walkable city is conducive to - alcoholics wandering around. And yes, if you’ve grown up with them, you know to ignore them, but maybe one out of a hundred is still dangerous occasionally when in a bad mood.

I’m from the bad old days when kids rode bicycles without helmets or parents.

Two neighborhood kids got creamed by a pickup truck. As a coincidence my family drove past the scene shortly afterwards and I’ll never forget the surreal color of blood soaking through the sheets covering their bodies. I’m really glad I didn’t know it was my friends when I saw it.

Freedoms are always a balance between two groups and what we culturally consider a harm or undue burden informs where we draw the line. And a lot of cultures right now are pretty autocratic.

Things car drivers see as sacrifices: not allows to roll coal when idling by a school, having to slow down for people to cross the road, sometimes possible parking spaces have bollards in the way.
