Yeah remember this is from the 90s, and Ned was in his 40s then, making him born in the 50s.
When he was a child he would have still been chastised or hit with a ruler for using his left hand.

yeah btw this connection between spatial orientation and character trait was already established in antiquity, at least for the right-hand. that’s why i keep saying that the denotations of “politically left/right” go back much farther than the french revolution.

I like to joke that I’m ambisinestral: two left hands.

I have always grabbed Grandma’s butt with my left hand. And she still likes it after all these years. 😜
I golf right and shoot right in hockey because I got my brother’s hand me downs ( back when sticks didn’t break every game). I play guitar right handed for a similar reason.
Hockey handedness doesn’t always correlate with regular handedness. I always heard shooting left was more prevalent in Canada for some reason. One of the most interesting things about the sport.
It’s true. There’s a differance between strong top hand vs strong bottom hand. We’re taught strong bottom here in Canada and you get strong top in the US. I just got the stick my brother had.
Interestingly I’ve been told that batting follows the dominant eye more than handedness. It especially important for those with larger noses 😄. The dominant eye is favored to get the more square view. You can spot those who’ve been tutored in batting from a young age because they twist their head like an owl to get two eye square on view.
Living the leftie life makes for much confusion. I write and bowl left handed. I throw a baseball right handed and bat left. I shoot a basketball left handed. And throw and kick a football right. I play guitar, fiddle, banjo and bass right handed.
Us lefties are far more adaptable than plain old righties.
Guitar seems like something that could be have beem standardized either way as it requires fine motor skills for both hands.
I just started playing bass guitar this year and getting my left hand to work the strings is far harder than rhythm with the right.
I’ve always suspected I was born a left-hander but my parents forced righthandedness on me. Whether it was bowling, baseball, or golf I always naturally started doing it the lefty way until I was corrected. Hockey is the only thing I continued doing lefthanded.

Ambidextrous people are around as well (1% of the population).
Until I got nerve damage to my left hand, I used both hands equally. It was handy in school to swap out my writing hand when one got tired. Used to freak teachers out because my writing is significantly different for each hand.
One of my sisters is ambidextrous. My younger son is also ambidextrous. So I suspect it has a genetic link.
Handedness is considered genetic these days. Being a leftie or ambi can be considered a genetic fault also. Since we are the definite minority. We just ain’t normal in the head.
And it’s thought that lefties are far more likely to show at least tendencies to being ambi than righties also. Though no one is very sure just how much is due to just genetics vs needing to learn to live and survive in a predominately right hand world. And they claim even the most die hard ambi person has at least a slightly favored hand.
While I claim to be a leftie, I can, like you write with both hands and some other tasks equally from both sides. Though I still prefer the left. But I can’t hit a baseball from the right side of the plate. Even though I prefer to throw right. I suspect that many ambi people are just lefties that are more willing to swing both ways.

Lefties and ambidextrous are appear to be genetically mostly independent. With lefties being a much more complex inheritance with multiple genotypes.

Lefties also tend to have a higher rate of bipolar and schizophrenia so about that not being right in the head… They also tend to have an gene for increase in inter-cranial volume.
Standard disclaimer: With human genetics the results always have to be taken with a grain of salt. A few annoying things like ethics and time prevents cleanly associating cause/effect. So human genetics use mostly correlation studies with their inherent inaccuracy.
I started out as ambidextrous, but they tried to force me into right handed in school. Now each hand handles different tasks. Based on precision or strength. Left is precision, right is strength.
My brother is left handed and he does play guitar right handed. Everything else he does leftily

I’m right-handed, but will use my left hand for some things. Maybe Ned is the same, but in reverse. Especially with writing. Many left handed people do learn to write with their right hand because pushing the pen/pencil is harder than pulling it when writing left to right.
Is this causation or correlation?
Test: does it still hold true when writing a language right to left?
I’m not sure. I’ve only read about this with English users. The languages I know that CAN do right to left also don’t HAVE to be right to left; they can also go left to right or top to bottom, so its like having built in accessibility options.
I was just talking to my mom about this, I used to be left handed. Then my teacher forced me to write right and slowly it became my dominant hand. Even though left handed feels better, I dont have the coordination or muscle memory to use it anymore. I feel like it really screwed up alot of my body coordination…
