Last big heatwave hit 35 here and I’m only an hour and a bit away from the edge of London

Anything over 28C is currently classified as a heatwave, but I think they’re going to have to revisit that, or just say “all summer is a heatwave try not to die” given 32-35C has been consistently hit pretty much every summer this decade.
That’s only 86F. It’s not a heat wave in the US until it’s in the mid 90s. That’s 35 Celsius.

yeah it’s not bad globally, but it is pretty bad for london, the infrastructure isn’t prepared for it
esp because it’s pretty humid as well, sweating doesn’t do muchYeah, the humidity also doesn’t compare. The US is, as with most things especially lately, way worse.
None of this means the UK has it easy, don’t misunderstand. It means the people stuck in the US are in a crazy land of stupid things which includes the weather. But at least there aren’t Australian murder fauna I guess.

I think what folks from not humid places don’t realize is how hot the shade is. Shade is always better than sun, obviously, but it sort of only takes the feeling of the sun against your skin. The air is still hot. I’d compare it to a sauna sort of. Like it’s still stuffy.
The first time my wife went to somewhere that actually has dry heat she said it was amazing. She was actually cold in the shade. Not just cool. That concept is so foreign to me.
I always wear long sleeved shirts, because I burn very quickly and don’t want skin cancer and I really dislike applying sunscreen all the time.
Same, but when it’s 30c+ outside there’s a huge difference between us going out wearing long sleeved linen shirts and light trousers, and the handful of people I always end up seeing (at least!) wearing puffer jackets and wooly hats.
Australians totally wear shorts all the way down to 0 degrees.
There’s a lot of jackets in November with 20° weather, at least in Melbourne - I got so many chuffed looks for wearing a T-shirt in cloudy weather

I can tell you, that as a native German speaker, deeply submerged in English media and programming languages, sometimes I don’t remember the German word and just insert English words into my sentences and everybody above the age of 45 gets extremely angry about that, while everyone below that age will just blink, nod and then go along.

if you been in stem in the US, you would use metric. people get wierd when you say kg, instead of lbs, or m/KM instead of miles.

Wait. So is it a flex to wear shorts at 10? Is a jacket at 30? I’m so confused. That’s like the mildest of temps. How about when we do yard work when it’s 37.5c? Or go kayaking in 7c because like all those things happened are normal here. I was building a fire pit area today and it was 100° and earlier in the year I was on the lake kayaking when it was 45°.

Ah, you see it’s easy! 10°C is 70°F in Canada and 30°C is 35°F in Australia. Fahrenheit is based upon comfortable temperature and since that differs by person and population the amount differs too!
Celsius is just boring old math though. Kind of like metric measurements. Everything devisable by 1000? Pffft, boooring! Give me my 600 feet to the mile and 8-1/2 football fields to league like a truely patriotic measuring system! Did I mention I actually prefer needing a lookup table to figure out unit conversions.

as someone who has visited one of the hottest countries on Earth, yeah… 30C in countries like that, is considered chilly. There were a couple of days in a row where the temp reached 50 and kept crawling. My Scandinavian ass was not ready.
An Australian family moved to my town on some kind of exchange and yah, the one kid was still wearing a jacket at 30. Literally never wasn’t cold.
Taught us how to play cricket, he was a cool kid.
