Would be kinda funny if Digg consumed reddit’s userbase after so many people having come from there in the early days.
Digg screwed up by doing what reddit had done starting a few years back, while there was an easy and available alternative to go over to.
Now digg is the easy alternative to go over to, but it won’t work as well. At least not for long. The people who own digg are venture capitalist firms. It’s sole existence is to monetize the hell out of the platform.
Meanwhile, Lemmy treads water with a bit too few members because the learning curve is a bit steeper to get started.

It wiped and all is new. I made my same email and user name I had there from like 20 years ago. I was a bit sad it didn’t say I had been on there since like 2005. I don’t plan on using the account much, but I’d be damned if some bot or something took my old user name before I got it.

I have used Digg since couple of months (it was in private beta). As of then, the only AI they used was for providing summaries for articles/links which is not the worst use case. Of course, app is slow, communities are restricted to a few set of default (Atleast until couple of weeks ago) and worst of all, low user activity. Like, till a month before, it was impossible to see any post that even got 100+ up votes (they have a ranking/leaderboard system where it showed the deficiencies in the system).
Sure with public beta, user activity will go up. Digg till now had one advantage and that was literally no trolling (but when you have such minimal activity it is not surprising).
The site and official app both aren’t exactly lean and I don’t think third party official alternatives(apps) are available (or will be) yet.
I don’t think anyone on here is going to suggest an AI-driven, centralized service.

No one migrated en masse to Lemmy because making an account here is too much work for someone to just hop on over and check out.
Reddit started in a VERY different online landscape, Lemmy got a huge boost from the APIpocolipse, and is still pretty small compared to reddit.

On the plus side, Lemmy doesn’t force you to make an account in order to view it. That’s becoming increasingly rare these days. It used to be normal to lurk for a while and get a feel for a site before taking the jump to making an account, but so many places won’t let you view a damn thing unless you sign up (and then when you have an account, they try to force their app onto you. Because of course.)
At least with Lemmy, newcomers can browse around and decide if making the account is worth it. The choices involved in picking an instance might not draw in crowds, but hopefully it’ll draw in those who actually want to engage with the site. Quality over quantity.
Ok, let me add this to the logic: reddit is not bad enough for most users to move away from it.
Most people leave Reddit involuntarily, when they suddenly get permabanned for no reason, because a mod was in a bad mood that day.

diggs front page is more appealing than piefed or lemmys ever is (I prefer piefed/lemmy) But if I didn’t join these and just got banned off reddit, id be all over digg and not considering piefed or lemmy because of the perceived barrrier, might not even hear about them because of no advertising
