Linux on a phone sucks too. Hopefully, it won’t one day but for it now, it does. To be fair, I’ve only used Ubuntu Touch and PocketBlue. Of those two, Pocket Blue was better, in my opinion. PostmarketOS looks promising but I don’t have a device that will run it well. Too many key features don’t work on my OnePlus 6t at the moment.
For now, AOSP with FDROID is where it’s at.
Exactly. Corporate social media is too much of a money making machine, for the corporations, advertisers, and influencers. The fediverse doesn’t add to anyone’s bottom line. I’m convinced that there is nothing that could make the average person leave Meta’s platforms.

I’m waiting on a Kobo Libra Colour right now. I looked at it and Boox. I went with Kobo because I didn’t want an Android tablet. If I was willing to spend more, I would have considered the Pocketbook which runs a custom Linux distro or the Supernote which does run Android but is super repairable and upgradable.
It’s like a baby step on the self hosting journey. Not as pure as Jellyfin but still a little better than Netflix. I paid for a Plex lifetime pass years ago, when they were still producing cool updates like DVR functionality for OTA broadcasts. I still run it but now Jellyfin is running alongside it with the intent of dropping Plex soon.
I have it set up on my own home server. Before that, I had it set up on individual PCs. It’s super easy. I guess you mean public instances. I’ve never used one because it is so easy to set up for yourself.
Or maybe they want monthly/annual/whatever subscribers, not lifetime, and so they’re making the lifetime pass prohibitively expensive. I have a lifetime pass I purchased a few years ago but after running Jellyfin alongside Plex for a few months, I don’t think I could recommend Plex to anyone who simply wants to host their own media.

Purchasing is an opt in too. I use both but paid for a Plex lifetime pass almost 10 years ago. It was easier to set up remote access. Setting up a server was new to me at the time so anything I could find that made it easier was worth it. I also bought an unRAID lifetime pass for the same reason (among other reasons).
I’m not sure. I’ve always wanted something like Plex but for games.
What about Sunshine and Moonlight? This is something I’ve been mildly interested in for a while but never took a deep dive.

Thinkcentre Tiny, Dell Optiplex Micro, or HP ProDesk Mini. Prices have gone up the last few months but they’re still a solid value. Most sellers ship pretty quick these days.
That was peak Ubuntu for me. I actually do mostly like where Gnome ended up but it just felt so new and fresh at the time. Until 2002, I had only ever used Windows and old Macs. When I saw what FOSS could be and Ubuntu then made it really easy, my mind was blown.

Snaps are the big one. I know Pro is free for the average users but imagine if they didn’t put security updates for the universe repos behind that sign up? I understand that they didn’t get those updates before Pro but imagine if they just gave those updates to all users. I still think it is one of the great all time distros. I just think their focus is more on enterprise than on the average user and I am nostalgic for those early days.
I stubbornly stuck with it until last year. I’d still recommend it to a new Linux user if they weren’t fans of Mint but I feel like Mint has more of that old Ubuntu spirit. Ubuntu is one of the greatest distros ever in my opinion, and I get that Canonical is a business and has to make money, but what if they had maintained that focus on Linux for human beings.
