This argument is illogical. Children of all ethnicities and religions are routinely forced to wear certain clothes or not wear others by their parents. Banning specific articles of clothing does nothing to change that.

Also, if children being forced to dress a specific way is a problem, than how is the Austrian state forcing children to dress a specific way acceptable as a “solution”

Arguments in favor of a hijab ban only make sense if you think hijabs are somehow uniquely harmful, a nonsensical and racist premise in my view.

How long ago were you in elementary school if you don’t mind me asking? When I was in either 1st or 2nd grade (2007-2008 ish?) we went over cursive writing only fairly briefly. I would say I can’t write in cursive though I can read it (admittedly slower than printed handwriting). Most of my friends my age can’t read cursive at all.

I don’t believe that the term terrorism is a valid one, or at least I don’t believe it’s a useful one. It has become such a propaganda term as to be virtually meaningless

It’s pretty cool. The west is a temperate rainforest, which is a beautiful and interesting environment. I currently live in a rural part of western Washington which has a fair share of chuds, but they are simewhat less rabid/easier to reason with than those in other areas in my experience. Also some cool folks, several reservations, some queer communities etc.

Olympia is a neat place, pretty, good music and art scene, active queer scene. Pretty solid.

Outside Seattle-Tacoma, there are a bunch of towns and islands around puget sound with ferries between them which is kinda fun. Some of the places are neat.

Seattle-Tacoma area definitely has a lot of cool people and projects, and outside of Seattle proper you might be even be able to afford to exist there. Unfortunately a lot of the industry there is weapons manufacturing. Don’t have that much detail to go into Seattle because I don’t really like big cities so I don’t really spend time there

Eastern Washington is very different. The weather is hotter and dryer and the chuds are more rabid. Way more idaho style Christian nationalist militia guys with a smattering of white homeland insurrectionary Nazis. Still some decent people and places here and there, and very pretty. Also home to major reservations, a small wine making region and of course the mighty Columbia river

Everywhere will have more natural disasters going forward but the upper Midwest will be affected somewhat less. I think Minnesota and Michigan are both worth looking into I have spent a fair amount of time there as some of my family lives there and had fairly positive experiences. Personally I find the cold winters relatively pleasant (as someone who has spent most of my life on the west coast) but ymmv. Personally I live in Washington, and I’d definitely recommend most of Western Washington. There are also some very friendly areas throughout Oregon and California, though we have wildfires in the rural areas (will make an effort post about wildfire myths, misconceptions and how to not get as fucked by them at some point in the near future when I have time). Don’t bother with trying to move to Seattle, Portland, San Francisco or Los Angeles, they are all very unaffordable. Id recommend many second and third tier cities of Washington, Oregon and even California though, especially if the weather of the Midwest is gnarly for you.

I can see where you are coming from but I don’t think this is the hill to die on and I think you should go to the funeral if you are able to. I also have relatives I strongly dislike, but if we are simultaneously at a funeral or a wedding or something, I just don’t talk to them. If they have hurtful things to say about me (I know they do) I don’t care because their opinions don’t matter to me.

For a while I had a bike trailer with a broken hitch, so I just lashed it to the seat post with two rather tight clove hitches and called it a day. Worked well enough, including on 10+ mile rides, that I failed to fix that for months. My point being, don’t overthink it too much, just build something and be prepared to modify it or go back to the drawing board.

I have grappled with similar thoughts before, and I still do in some ways. Shit is extremely bad here, and it can feel extremely demoralizing and hopeless. That being said, I have made the decision to stay, at least for now, to fight for the bioregion I view as my home. Che Guevara apparently said “I envy you north Americans, you have the privilege to fight in the belly of the beast.” Which I respect as a sentiment. I don’t judge you for choosing to leave though. Pure stubbornness only hoes so far and at a certain point you have to prioritize your mental and physical well-being

I think I’m one if the few people on this site in that age range (I’m 23), and I actively organize with many people in their early 20s. My experience is much less universally negative, though there are elements of it I see. Irony poisoning, apathy and disillusionment seem to be extremely widespread. On the one hand, certain reactionary viewpoints (esp misogyny) will be stated more openly by some, but finding a genuine supporter of any given reactionary politician is quite rare in my experience-- in fact even those who are vocally misogynistic tend to be equally vocally anti any reactionary politician they can name. No one has much hope for the future yet turning that disillusionment into action can be quite difficult.

In my workplace, “Epstein class” rhetoric is pretty much universal. sympathy with Iran and Palestine is commonplace (people post Iran Lego videos in the work group chat regularly, and people reply “death to Israel”), sympathy for the us army and the police is minimal. However this coexists with jokes about sexual assault, ZOG posting, and hustle grind brainworms, and even pro deportation comments. Oh and ableist language is all pervasive. But I’m openly queer and trans on a blue collar job in a rural area, and I have only ever had serious issues with that around coworkers over 40. I don’t know if that would have been the case 10 years ago.

I think the overall trend is disillusionment and even pseudo radicalization becoming extremely normal, without any coherent ideological framework behind it. The tendency usually expresses itself in adventurism or inaction. I have yet to see it manifest in fascism (to most people my age, trump is the usa establishment) in the traditional sense, but neither is it progressive per se. It is discontent that seems to reject action, organization or ideological coherence.
