No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•I also have an opportunity to study abroad in Iceland. Is that also a good choice?
8·12 days agoHaving been to both I would say both are amazing but Budapest is your best bet for studying and enjoying a quintessential European atmosphere. Iceland is starkly beautiful but you aren’t going to able to see the whole country properly unless you do a week or two long road trip. It’s also considerably more expensive especially to eat out. People are kind but more reserved and distanced.
Budapest is a central hub to an incredible array of European trips that you can do on a weekend with public transport. Being in the east it’s also relatively cheap. It’s a big city full of young people, nightlife and culture with a rich history that you can walk to and experience every day.

The guardians were such good stand alone movies I wish they hadn’t been a part of the MCU and just developed on their own. It was kind of jarring to watch 1 and 2 then come back to 3 with a bunch of plot progression and character development you have to watch unrelated movies to understand
Should have joined the Navel Inspector General

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What spelling, grammar or semantics rules have been lost in your lifetime?
0·20 days agoInteresting, thanks for taking the time to reply! How do European Portuguese sound to the Brazilian ear? Like, as an Australian, New Zealanders sound sort of plucky and goofy to me, Americans are brash and loud, Canadians are laid-back, received English sounds polite or formal etc. I’m sure they all think Australians sound like sandpaper 😅

0·20 days agoMost definitely fits the question, also TIL about the PLOA. Are Brazilian and continental Portuguese different enough to be called dialects? Given its much larger population does Brazil have an outsized influence on Portuguese language development through media?

0·21 days agoReally interesting stuff! It just goes to show that even without ‘authorities’ such as the French Language Academy, loan words end up becoming modified and molded by their adoptive language. I’m learning Japanese and it has so many loan words going all the way back to the dutch. Some are barely recognisable for example computer is パソコン = pasokon = personal computer.

0·21 days agoInteresting! Thanks for a non english perspective. Is German language development Influenced by widespread english competency? Are Germans becoming less fussy about certain rules in favour of some of English’s simpler or more flexible constructs? (Not to suggest that English isn’t a Byzantine mess of a language itself!)

0·21 days agoActually, when I think about it. I rarely see people complaining about emojis at work. Ironically if there’s one place that people hate emojis it’s Reddit or Lemmy 😅.
Do you speak another language than English? I’d be fascinated to know if similar language battles are happening in other languages.

0·21 days agoI wonder if some day in the future emojis will make their way from casual conversation into business? I guess I already use things like thumbs up in semi work chats - it’s especially useful as a way of ensuring a message isn’t read sarcastically or passive aggressively. LLMs seem more than happy to plop an emoji or two into a document.
Speaking of AI I’m already noticing that poor spelling, slang and the like are almost signifiers of a human. I wonder if ways of talking that distinguish us from AI will become more common or more valuable?
Why is he dig? Why the metal man is dig?

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Does anyone else find 'pseudoanimation' annoying?
3·1 month agoThat’s a nice nostalgic take. I do remember a similar style being used in some flash videos and that didn’t bother me at the time. I think maybe it’s just become too common and feels lazy. Kind of like how Memphis art style was once unique and fresh but then became very associated with a bland corporate aesthetic.
Did they meet because of you? I hope you told that story at their wedding.

4·1 month agoNo doubt at all. I’m probably just in the minority who pay it too much attention. It’s like visual tinnitus to me.
Stick figures are far less jarring for me, it’s when they try to create semi realistic characters that sway repeatedly that it bothers me

6·1 month agoI feel like when puppeteers and rubber hose animators have cyclic animation they add to the characters personality. A character like miss piggy flops around dramatically, Kermit crumples awkwardly, Betty Boop bobs around perkily. The animation you see on YouTube are basically - define arms legs and head then sway back and forth every 2 seconds - copy for all characters.

Fish do certainly feel pain but there’s an important distinction to be made between pain and suffering and I think your friend is confusing the two. Suffering is harder to define but it could be defined as the ability to understand pain - if an animal can become depressed, can remember it’s pain, can develop phobias, can grieve. It’s less clear to what extent different fish can suffer. Despite how callous their reasoning may sound to an experienced vegan they actually sound like they’re engaging morally with the issue and it’s a great starting point for further reflection. I would encourage them to go pescetarian to start with and then gently introduce them to fish welfare and harmful fishing practices when they are more comfortable with a meat free diet.
