    it never falls below 35%

For ~1/3 of people there’s no bottom. There’s nothing he can do that won’t still have them supporting him.

Yep, total fringe nutjobs who continue supporting him even when his tomfuckery affects them directly because they’re legit too stupid to see the damage he’s causing them.

Edit: Perhaps “fringe” was too minimizing a word. Sadly, not a minority of people want fascism to reign unchecked in this country.

A third of the country are not “fringe.” Nutjobs, sure, but a statistically meaningful segment. In a multi-party country, you’d have trouble forming a government without them in your coalition. Considering that the GOP is barely 1/2 of the population, the 1/3 Trump-core are a dominating super-majority of the party that has gerrymandered itself into electoral dominance.

I mean, if it’s a third of the population, is it still fringe? I think that’s the most terrifying part of all of this. One out of every three people isn’t absolutely disgusted and pissed off by what this dude is doing. That’s insane.

People saying his supporters are fringe are just huffing copium. A large portion of this country are willing participants in fascism.

This is why Canadians aren’t going to just forgive and forget if this guy is booted from office. The USA has way deeper issues to address before they can ever be trusted again.

Many of them have no idea what’s actually happening. They’re firmly in their bubble and refuse to believe anything negative about Trump.

To be fair, devils advocate, whatever. These stolid immovable morons aren’t, at least some of them as evil as they appear. Their opinions are likely informed by prejudice, yes. But the root cause of the prejudice, and the reason why they remain unphased by incontrovertible evidence against their position is one and the same: they are very poorly educated. Which is exactly how the system is designed. And the real insidious bit is that when we reprimanded them for their lack of basic humanity, they only internalize the insults, and it feeds their carefully cultivated persecution complex. The Ronald Reagans of the world have successfully created a race of mole-people, born without eyes with which to see facts. If you show them facts, the facts don’t register at all. They don’t know what a fact is. They just hear the tone of your voice and the anger or pity in your eyes, and feel threatened or insulted. Whatever the solution is, it wont be as easy as sound logic. And for their part, they aren’t inherently evil. They are the products of government abuse.

Or either the polling system is flawed or the media are lying.

      Or both.

Some people want to watch the world burn. Some people are uneducated idiots that aggressively refuse to accept outside information, and probably include a decent number of trolls that will reply in whatever way they can to elicit a negative response. Some people are just pieces of shit.

Add up the numbers and the 30% is unsurprising. One trip through the comment section of Nextdoor, Threads, Twitter, or any platform where someone makes an even tangentially political comment should be proof of that.

Yep. I still have not deleted my account on Nextdoor. Someone can post something related to water restrictions and bam, next thing you know, the comments contain: references to how They ™ are manipulating the weather and of course, lots of racially coded stuff about “too many people” in the “apartments in the city”.

      It’s the Sarah Palin floor.

It’s probably also a measure of people with problematic personality traits and an indicator of education, as well.

Yes there is. No longer being cruel to minorities, and supporting science.

He hit a huge wall of backlash from his base when he tried to take credit for and promote the Covid vaccine.
