People who still use both Reddit and Lemmy and are slowly leaving Reddit. How do you do it?
I have noticed that I’m very often on Reddit through either Apollo or the website out of mere habit (possibly even addiction). However, I have also noticed that the more I use Reddit, the more I feel agitated by all the negativity and toxicity from the users.
This is pretty much in all subreddits I’m active in. Mostly in piracy and piratedgames, people quarrel over the most trivial things and downvote each other for no reason at all.
Unfortunately, Lemmy has less content than Reddit. Though, I can’t call what is on Reddit content anymore.
Lemmy definately has less content, but it feels like the old internet. People are just friendlier here. My biggest recommendation is to post/comment a lot; I think things like that really help the platform grow. I can honestly say I’ve never received any negative feedback here, so its a pretty safe space.
There I commented. Hate how they phasing out r/all.
My experience has been very different, especially yesterday. My reddit account had plenty of trolls on the blocklist, but I encountered an individual here who made several snap judgments about me based on an innocent response to a question and then demanded an apology from me for their hurt feelings when I said nothing targeted at anyone and they initially inserted themselves with arrogance and vitriol.
As well, if you’re not full on tankie/anarchist or at least more than halfway to either one, prepare for people to take issue with your stances. Vehemently. As if you were personally attacking them for having the audacity to, you know, be an individual.
However I still prefer this experience to whatever it is Reddit has become and agree with your suggestions for how to make it more engaging.
Every place has assholes, there are fewer on Lemmy. Block and move on.
Expecting positive interactions with other humans, that is your problem right there ha
Everyone romanticizes the “old” Reddit and the old internet quite a bit. There were always trolls, fake accounts, a holes and whiny jerks. The ads, bots, and all the more recent issues just tipped reddit over the edge.
I felt bad leaving a 15 year old account but it wasn’t hard. I hadn’t enjoyed Reddit in a while. I uninstalled the client and installed mlem. It also helped me to temporarily switch browsers so I’m not getting Reddit threads as part of the search results. If I want Reddit in my search results then I will look for that intentionally.
Dunno, I rather enjoy interacting with other humans.
Its people that fuck things up, broadly speaking. I don’t particularly love people, but humans are alright in my book. Unfortunately, people are everywhere.
To define terms a little more clearly, humans recognize things like “the other human” and “do unto others” and such. People, broadly, are greedy selfish creatures that will step on your feet without a second glance but be utterly appalled should anybody have the unmitigated gall to treat them in kind.
These definitions transcend all political divisions and ideologies and belief systems, for the record. I have known some lovely religious conservative humans and some genuinely awful and repulsive progressively-minded people.
I always try to be a human. Emphasis on try, as people make it difficult sometimes.
I think to survive on Lemmy (all social media tbh) you need two things.
One is the ability to disengage when it’s no longer fulfilling. I see reports from people saying they are being harassed by someone in a thread and I can’t help but wonder why they didn’t stop replying to the bad faith comment about 17 replies earlier.
The second is that you should block what you don’t want to see. Block communities where you know you’ll never be interested. Block users who reply in bad faith. Block instances where you see bad faith commenters a lot.
Do these two things, and comment a lot, and I think you end up with a much better experience.
Funny enough, I made a post in another community specifically about blocking. On the one hand I agree with you as for the curated experience, on the other hand echo chambers are unhealthy.
Its a very difficult balance to strike. Thus far I have only blocked communities which have zero bearing in my life - languages I don’t speak, kinks I simply don’t share, etc. However, blocking individuals is something I frankly hesitate to do because even the literal worst POV out there is useful; its good to know where the extremes lie and to be prepared for that level of madness.
At least, that’s my opinion. And thankfully I find so far that even the most absurd hot take that I disagree with wildly on this site is still more palatable to me than half the crap that was out there on reddit before I left. And even those with snark are often kinder about it than reddit, I find.
In fact, I seem to be the barely-palatable-hot-take here as often as not, but given upvotes are entirely meaningless in all ways and especially to my actual daily life I generally am not bothered by it.
On the one hand I agree with you as for the curated experience, on the other hand echo chambers are unhealthy.
My suggestion is to block bad faith participants. There are lots of conversations I have with people who disagree with me and probably can’t be convinced otherwise, but they are still enjoyable conversations if they are had in good faith.
To be honest I don’t block that many users, I am able to spot bad faith participants and not reply to them, and if they reply to me I don’t reply back. But if people are having trouble with the argumentative minority of Lemmy, I think blocking them is important. There’s no point being here if you’re not enjoying it.
Well said, friend. Cheers, and stay chill.
if you’re not full on tankie/anarchist or at least more than halfway to either one, prepare for people to take issue with your stances.
Ahh yes, tankies and anarchists, famously the only political ideologies that “take issue with your stances.”
This is totally an echo chamber. Just look around. Its part of what drew us all here at the end of the day.
And for the record, I prefer that flavor of madness over whatever the US is voting in around the country right now, so maybe take my observations as nothing more or less than just that - observations.
Not saying we in the united States aren’t to blame for a lot of what’s going on but its starting to become global. Migration/race issues are becoming hot everywhere and at the same time everyone is rushing in the new era of survalience on the level, or surpassing that of 1984.
I always used to imagine that I could just flee my country when things got too bad, but increasingly it seems like its spreading every where.
I am more and more convinced we need to build a commune somewhere in New Zealand and do our best to ride out the climate wars in the most resilient part of the world. What are the weed laws in NZ and how seriously do they take them?
The epstine class have already beat you there, majority of them plan on moving there including Gabe newel. So hope you like working as a servant or a house keep.
I am entitled to land in Alaska and been considering that more and more lately.
That area is supposed to shift in the upcoming decades and be more mild and similar to the pnw if I understood what I was reading correctly.
I’d wanna be south of the arctic circle, though. I need something resembling seasons and am absolutely certain I would go genuinely insane with six month intervals of night and day. As long as those conditions are met, I’m down with that too.
I also read somewhere that Britons might wanna consider starting vineyards as the climate there is likely to become more Mediterranean. Also something to consider.
I’m sorry to hear that happened to you
As was pointed out, that’s the nature of the internet and those who inhabit it.
Broadly, though, I enjoy my time here. I wouldn’t remain otherwise.
i automatically block those people on lemmy, sorry but a political statement based on opinion and attitude is an immediately block. as is ones that make very condescending ones.
blocking on reddit seems futile, since alot of them are bots/propaganda bots, theres for every troll blocked, another 10 pops up. also reddit stops blocking thier comments if you go over 1000 users. it only works if its a small subreddit. politics, news, sports, movies, ask reddit, etc impossible to block them all.
I don’t still use Reddit. I bailed back when they took ownership of all of my content. I did go through some withdrawals. Would constantly open my phone to open Reddit and remember that I had uninstalled and closed my account. Now a few years later I don’t have anything like parity in Lemmy compared to my Reddit experience. Ultimately, I decided to not try and chase that. Lemmy is not Reddit, And the Reddit that I loved back in the day, is completely gone anyway, replaced by some corporate bullshit, bolstered by bad actors and robots.
What I love about Lemmy, in contrast, is smaller communities and more genuine engagement. There are still bots and bad actors. Regardless of its flaws though, I’m about as likely to go back to Reddit as I am to creating a Facebook account. I’m on my phone less and more engaged with the actual people in my life now. Maybe we all need less social media, not better social media.
This is also exactly my experience
I don’t use reddit anymore, I still have an account but I stay logged out unless I need to see info in a thread that is some fix that I need because they won’t let you see that not without being logged in.
Lemmy does have way less content and way less people but you can find them if you look. I suggest changing your default sort to either “active” or “new comments”. I use “New comments” this sort will show all threads that have any new comments on them so I can find the active conversations right away. I have been very chatty on Lemmy this way.
Lemmy has its own set of trolls and extremists, they aren’t conservative trolls like you see on reddit, they are extreme left all the way around back to Fascism, but I see you are on db0 so, you won’t see the more troublesome instances.
So I used to used both Reddit and Lemmy and now I have completely switched over to Lemmy, which has turned out to be a much better experience anyway. (Less trolls, less intentionally divisive content, etc)
Here’s what I did:
- Got a permanent ban from Reddit (easy to do, plenty of guides online)
- Started a lemmy community ([email protected])
- Engage with others on lemmy
- Post content to c/westchesterny and other communities I am interested in (typically NYC metro area communities)
What it was for me is Lemmy has a lot of tech and political discussions, but I don’t really care about that so I started a community and contribute to communities that are regional to me because engaged hyper local and regional communities are a huge gap in the lemmy federation right now.
I use Reddit to browse since there is more content specific to the topics I want. But I do all my interaction here. All the posts and replies are here.
Reddit is just for browsing now.
I still look at reddit sometimes on my computer. But I just never installed their app on my phone.
Reddit… really sucks now. Idk if it has gotten way more reactionary or if I’m just more aware of it. Tons of chuds, recycled posts, tons of astroturfing, bad comment sections. I don’t miss it in its current state.
I think there has been a significant algorithm change. When I click on the hot tab on old Reddit it appears a little more like it used to. Although it doesn’t explain everything.
the APP is the one thing reddit wants you to be on, they can datamine you more effectively. they have been doing everything they can to force people on the phone to use the app. login popups, partially disabling old reddit, forcing the page refresh if you try to backspace.
The key is that there can be no “slowly leaving.” I went absolute cold turkey. I maintain that there is no other way. Not only do most people not have the self control to be able to moderate themselves, but reddit’s structure and algorithm are specifically designed to try to suck you back in, keep you enraged, and keep you scrolling. Because Enragement is Engagement™.
But reddit and its various decision makers went out of their way to piss me off multiple times, as well as tons of other people, so I left. I consider myself a pretty rational and level headed bird, and I made plenty of contributions. But the message there was clear: They don’t want people like us there. They want vacant eyeballs they can market at with bots. That’s what the new shareholders demand.
I have not found that my life has been significantly less enriched without reddit being present in it. Rather, much the opposite. All the inevitable bickering, the arguing with idiots, the whole thing about having to walk on eggshells or appear to espouse a particular approved dumbass point of view or else you’ll be brigaded with downvotes or randomly banned; it turns out none of that is productive. It’s not even, if we’re honest, really engagement.
I find I have more hours in my day to do something else instead. I’d rather do something tangible, and here I can share it without having to be concerned about whether or not my contribution will be approved by the hivemind.
Reddit is full of bots who’s mission is to keep you outraged and angry, there by keeping you engaged and locked on. Of course you’re going to feel agitated. I left cold turkey and replaced my addiction with Lemmy, people here are nicer and fewer bots.
funny you mention the botting, it gotten so bad, that reddit lost tons of traffic due to AI posting it, and google not renewing thier contract reddit to train thier AI, OPENAI/CHATGPT is steering away from it temporarily. not much data to mine, if its all AI anyways. and this partially the result of the overbanning they had done last year. wiped hordes of accounts per user.
I just use a redlib instance to lurk on reddit.
https://github.com/redlib-org/redlib-instances/blob/main/instances.md
Can subscribe and filter users and subreddits, and is an accountless experience.
I don’t find reddit anymore aggravating than lemmy, since I stick to subreddits I’m interested in which tends to be more mellow stuff like games and tech compared to if I was looking at news type subs.
I just do more actual commenting here due to having easy access to third party apps which reddit no longer provides. And I don’t feel like going through effort of getting stuff like reddit is fun working. I’m fine lurking reddit now and not bothering logging in.
Just walk away from reddit it’s easy.
I just… left.
I came here during the API change drama. Started to get acquainted with the platform before Apollo stopped working. And when it did, I never came back. Didn’t even bother deleting my few hundred comments or give them the chance to ban me for not being a nazi propagandist cunt.
Same. Cold turkey.
Only Reddit if I need to look something up, and that’s only through libredirect.
Same as well, RiF was what used. I didn’t download their app so it was a little easier not to go back.
Outside of one community I use to track sales for a niche hobby, my main use of reddit is looking up old threads. There’s nothing new on there that’s helpful anymore. I like looking up old episode discussion threads for TV shows that I’m watching for the first time, for instance.
I wish Lemmy was a good alternative. But without enough people using it, it can’t really come close to a replacement. All my interests are more niche too, and I hate Discord, so it leaves me out here touching grass.
Reddit’s always been toxic, it’s just worse the more MAGA and AI came to prominence (also a lot of what appears to be Russian astrotufing, but that might just be the subs I used).
Unfortunately, Lemmy’s not always better. I’ve been trying to figure out which instances to avoid, because I am really tired of certain people harping on about certain things.
Now that old.reddit is account-walled, its become reeeeaal easy to not go there at all
I used to use a browser add on to redirect links to old reddit. After the wall they just updated it to display new reddit as old
yep. I’m slowly corrupting my posts to contribute to their google ai training.
its already working, alot of the posts are AI reposting, or posting comments. hence why they are trying to force real users.
I started when the API thing went down… exploring other sites with Lemmy among them. After continued enshitification I slowly started manually deleting 13 years of posts. Some here, some there. When I ran out of posts to delete I killed my account and just would occasionally browse old reddit. Now after they killed old reddit without logging in. (Which I will not do again). That was it. You get way better conversations here with mostly real people … Honestly feels like the old days of reddit. I’ve had to find other places for niche forums and stuff for my hobbies but I’d rather do that then to go back to that shit pile.
Step one is to never log in to Reddit again. Just lurk. You still get access, but your community is here.
i think most people are lurking right now on reddit, because of banning potential, and this is the result of reddit banning and losing users that they are desperate now.
