Man, it is weird how retard became a bad word. Like someone woke up one day and said “I’m going to be offended for the mental challenged and this word is no longer acceptable”. But, like, for whom the word is intended likely doesn’t actually have the mental faculties to be offended much less comprehend it as a slur. Do we really need to be so overly sensitive?
I mean, I guess you could put this in the same bucket of bigotry as racism and racists slurs, but that’s like putting a nerf gun in with the box of AKs.
It’s not that people are offended for the mentally challenged, it’s the fact that people started using it to refer to people who were not mentally challenged but were just acting a specific way. In this way equating being mentally challenged with being stupid (or whatever else was implied by it).

People used to use the word a lot in this sense. At some point, that became unacceptable so people stopped using the word in this sense. And now, because less people use it in an offensive sense, people think it’s okay to start doing it again without (as the case is proven by OP) realizing what it does in the long term.
The same thing happened with stupid, idiot and dumb. They were clinical words.

If you think that mentally challenged people dont understand when someone is mocking them, or that its okay to mock someone just because they dont understand it, then you are the problem.
Not mocking them, honestly. But comparing them with someone else when that someone else behaves or thinks in a diminished capacity. And maybe that isn’t very nice, but it is objective. That someone else can obviously comport themselves better and apply a little more brain power, to avail themselves of the very advantages they have. When you compare an adult someone’s behavior or thinking to a child, are you offending the child?

Weirdly this is a proper question, even if we are talking about cognitive ability, as disabled peoples are not retarding their functions at all, but it seems like perfectly standard people seem to retard their abilities to understand and comprehend to massive levels many times thru out the day. Most the time I see it while they are driving.
