A lot of people who know more about what they’re talking about have addressed it, there’s an admin post on blahaj about it, and the first I ever saw was the dbzer0 post that seems to have triggered the (much deserved) avalanche
People looked at the source code. Presumably because of you tried to post something that’s blocked you just got an indescriptive error message, and they were trying to fix the “error” themselves
lol db0 was running it on his own instance and when he updated to the version with the secret blocklist his entire feed was blank, because his instance (dbzer0) was on the blocklist
Dude made a “secret” blocklist that told on itself instantly
A Lemmy web UI that was fairly popular, turns out it had hardcoded lists to block users and instances the developer didn’t like
