US commits another WAR CRIME.
I don’t understand how people can follow a command like this and then go home and sleep at night.
This is literally what the US has been doing for 70 years.
Doesn’t change the question.
The answer is most normal people cannot. There are sociopaths that can and they are concentrated in our military of murderers.
The answer is propaganda.
People with thoughtful morals don’t join the military. Sociopaths, moral LARPers, and desperate people do.
Well as a subordinate who is given illegal orders they’re kind of fucked there’s no good choice so that’s why it was so important for commanders to only issue legal orders. So they don’t put their men in a bad legal situation.
If a solider doesn’t follow the command they’re given probably going to be found guilty of insubordination, regardless of whether it is illegal or not. They’ll probably be called a criminal, lose all the benefits that come from service, or possibly be executed according to this administration.
If a soldier follows illegal orders like these then they can be charged as war criminals and executed.
The ONLY way to be able to refuse illegal orders is to have an enormous amount of support from other soldiers and the judge advocate General’s office. Which are resources your average soldier doesn’t have. Yes the Uniform Code of Military Justice says following illegal orders is illegal but the reality is very different.
Aka, more war crimes committed by the regime in charge of the USA.
Humanitarian law is also designed to protect civilian objects, including those indispensable to the survival of the civilian population. Article 29 of the Convention on the law relating to the non-navigational uses of international watercourses [available on http://www.un.org/], adopted by the General Assembly of the United Nations in 1997, stipulates:
“International watercourses and related installations, facilities and other works shall enjoy the protection accorded by the principles and rules of international law applicable in international and non-international armed conflict and shall not be used in violation of those principles and rules”.
General protection under the law applicable to armed conflicts extends to more than international watercourses, and the four main prohibitions laid down in that law are worth noting:
the ban on employing poison or poisonous weapons; the ban on destroying, confiscating or expropriating enemy property; the ban on destroying objects indispensable to the survival of the civilian population; the ban on attacking works or installations containing dangerous forces.
The four prohibitions, to which should be added the provisions on environmental protection, are expressly mentioned in the instruments relating to international armed conflicts, and the last two are also laid down in the law applicable to non-international armed conflicts. Starvation as a method of warfare is explicitly prohibited regardless of the nature of the conflict, and the concept of objects essential for the survival of the civilian population includes drinking-water installations and supplies and irrigation works. Immunity for indispensable objects is waived only when these are used solely for the armed forces or in direct support of military action. Even then, the adversaries must refrain from any action which could reduce the population to starvation or deprive it of essential water.

We didn’t get 9/11ed enough. We deserve way more.
Goliath holding open auditions for the role of David
Really pushing for that Greatest Satan moniker.
If you count all the war crimes committed by US soldiers, regardless of who was president, you will come to the conclusion that the US is an imperial, colonial, exploitative power.
Previously, they hid behind diplomacy, the UN, “freedom”, “democracy”. Donald Trump has portrayed the US as it has been all these years after the Second World War, selfish, greedy, without a shred of empathy.
That is why some Americans cannot stand Trump because he exposes them for what they are.
Where is the UN ?
Where is the UN when russia sends drones straight in Chornobyl confinement unit for shits and giggles and proceeds to brag about it for months? Same shit, pal.
The UN and what army? The UN is nothing more than neutral ground where diplomats and envoys can safely talk to each other. It has no more power than the member states are willing to give it. The US, China, Russia and Israel will never give it the power to intervene in their wars.
International doesn’t apply to the powerful.
Probably writing strongly worded letters to Iran telling them to capitulate to the US.
That’s crazy…
Eh in this case its not really that. Most members are staying out of it or condemning the axis of evil (us+israel). Now when I say “condemning” I mean some interview with a government person saying something along the lines of “well it is not a good thing blatant war crimes are going on but we in insert nation would never do such things”
The UN has no execurive power and stste members pretend veto really matter so they don’t act
Trump replaced it with his own pay to play version. Since he no longer cares about what the UN thinks, he’s no longer bound by what the UN says.
America never was, lol.
let’s not pretend he’s the first president to do so. the lineage of presidents not giving a shit what UN says is rather long. Like every president since Truman.
Watching the world police exterminate Iranians
Meanwhile, the rest of the world thinks that it’s okay to remain entirely silent when the US breaches the Geneva Convention.
they are silent because ISRAEL INSTIGATED It, and they dont want to offend either country right now.
Most countries remain silent but are very much against the US.
The thing is, most countries are digitally dependent on the US, like on Microsoft. The vast majority of enterprises and governments use stuff like Windows and Microsoft Teams and switching to FOSS alternatives can take years. So the fear is that countries criticize Trump and the US too harshly, that Trump could just cut them off, and governments and enterprises would have their digital infrastructure bricked.

War crime
And we add it to the pile…
Another day another war crime from this piece of shit country…

anytime anything new comes up with epstein, he starts bombing iran.
What is this from?
The faint “dreamstime” watermark led me to search for that name. Looks like a stock photo company.
Dreams in the name almost guarantees ai.
Looked around more, Tineye followed it back to Adobe stock photos where they say it is AI.
No idea lol I just googled “gigantic pile of papers image”
I read the headline and was the same like, isn’t that a…
Crime against humanity
You are right. It is more adequate term
Not a single mention of that in the article.
Attacking a reservoir is illegal (war crime) as it is a piece of civilian infrastructure. All attacks on civilian infrastructure are crimes of war and can be punished under the Geneva Conventions.
Deliberately starving a civilian population by destroying or blocking access to food, water, and other survival necessities is a war crime. This includes interfering with humanitarian relief supplies. A 2019 amendment to the Rome Statute extended this prohibition to non-international armed conflicts, closing a significant gap in the law.
Unless they can prove that the reservoir was being used as part of the military or military support operations,it’s off limits.
Since the usa was in negociations and even said that it was a retaliation against the shooting for the helicopter. The principle of necessity and proportionality is not there.
It’s also just stupid. All they’re doing is turning more Iranians against them and increasing support for the regime. It’s toddler tantrum shit.
Isn’t Iran the one that needs to prove that it was not used as part of military operations? They are after all the ones doing the accusing.
and can be punished under the Geneva Conventions
Laughs in Hague invasion act
I understand that. I’m making a statement that there were no mentions of war crimes. Let’s do another round?
They bombed a reservoir.
That is a war crime.
The article doesn’t need to explicitly say “they gone and done some war crimes” for that to be the case.
Almost certain that the person you’re replying to is saying that the article should say that it’s a war crime, not that it isn’t one because the article doesn’t say so.
Crazy how people missed that one lmao
This exactly. For the mouth-breathers out there who don’t understand why it’s a bad idea to bomb reservoirs, it’s important to state clearly this is a war crime.
Of course, the fucking US Government has done countless war crimes and not been prosecuted. So… yeah.
Ah my mistake
So you need a news reporter to declare its a war crime before you will use your own brain and understand the definitions of war crimes, is that whats going on here?
Yes. For the dummies, you do. What is hard to understand about this? Not everybody is well informed or educated enough to know what is and is not a war crime.
They are criticizing the article for being non-comprehensive.
You are criticizing them because you misunderstood their point and I guess you felt the need to keep digging until you started throwing insults.
You know - I don’t think I need to offer further commentary. The facts are in evidence.
Take a deep breath. Think of something you’re grateful for, and tell someone you care for them. That is your penance. The comment I replied to is:
Not a single mention of that in the article.
Which was itself a reply to mrdowns comment:
War cimes
Its pretty straight forward. Then look at "orbituary"s other comments and you see stuff like this:
Yes. For the dummies, you do. What is hard to understand about this? Not everybody is well informed or educated enough to know what is and is not a war crime.
So if you want to dick-waggle at someone about nuance and not understanding, talk to your buddy Orbituary. Its a lame point made poorly, and your assigning ire to me on it is another lame point. You have yourself a nice day, and get off your dumb high horse assigning people “penance”. Who the eff do you think you are?
edit: @Monument, I do see that the pattern of your comments is exactly this in many instances-- its what you are here for, accusing people of not understanding things, then calling them names on a high horse to make yourself feel smart. This is your whole shtick. Its Pathetic and Tedious. You must be real fun in real life.
Oh, you’re right! You did jump to insults right off the bat.
Then you stalked my account to try to create more personalized attacks.
I mean, you can keep arguing but you will have to do better than to accuse me of trying to be a good person. Unless you were trying to say I’m fake, but
I actually care. And the same sort of toxic user behavior that ruined Reddit long before the administrators did is something I try to meet with good humor and a sense of silliness. Maybe the Lemmy community can keep that at bay.If your antipathy and rage at other people is such that you cannot break through it to realize someone is cracking a joke, then… I don’t know. I don’t have a constructive suggestion right now.
No joke here: Are you physically in pain? Maybe something you don’t realize is bothering you? Possibly some other drain on your psyche? You’re putting out a lot of hate for being random text in my phone.

I quess water infrastructure is on the table now. Good job, America.
Iran will offcourse retaliate by hitting the water infrastructure in the Gulf States, causing massive issues in the Arab world.
This is Russia level incompetence.
Huh, wouldn’t expect that from someone who regularly passes cognitive tests (/s)
Man, horse, Iran, missile
Sounds like a fun night
Worse than russia
Look, it’s bad, but Russia is striking civilian housing daily in Ukraine, which is impossible to even argue are strategic targets. They’re both doing bad things. Let’s just leave it at that.
America genocided Korea.
The usa stroke iranian civilians daily during the war too. Billions of dollars are given to israel to commit genocide
And Russia gives (or gave, since they’re now barely able to fund their own war) billions to fund conflict too. Neither one is really above the other. The sooner we stop squabbling about our favorite nations, as if they’re sports teams, and figure out how to work together to better the regular people the better.
The sooner we stop squabbling about our favorite nations
We both do not deny that both countries are terrible so I nobody is squabbling about his favorite nations here but I am sorry but it is a fact that the USA did more damage to the world than Russia. The usa hold the title of the country who is involved in the biggest number of military coups , the title of who finance the biggest numbers of genocides and the title of the country who is involved in creating the biggest numbers of failed states.
Russia is funding the undermining of democracies all over the west (and probably elsewhere too). I disagree that either is worse. They’re nation-states. Their entire goal is power.
The US has more influence globally, so it has almost certainly done more harm, but not because it’s particularly worse. It’s only because it has the capability. Russia is managing to do as much harm as it can. They don’t give a shit about the people, let alone their people.
Russia most of time spread propaganda using social media and to undermind the so called western democracies. The united snakes most of the time fund the terrorists or help them with intel to overthrow non western so called democracies to put puppets
Oh but that would be “terrorism”.
I do not understand why Gulf states aren’t pulling out every possible stop they have to get Trump and Israel to stop this buffoonery. Like I don’t see how any possible outcome of this war could even possibly benefit them?
What levers would they pull? Most are barely more then a set of wealthy oligarchs playing at a nation. Not really having a tonne of cards to play in this stupid conflict with the us/israel and not the spine to stand up against them.
The leadership is too busy being obscenely rich and banging hookers.
This is Russia level incompetence.
well when your nation becomes a vassal state to Russia, that is to be expected.
Russia’s economy is smaller than California’s, don’t be silly.
have you been paying attention recently?
If we’ve been paying attention, then the US is a vassal state of Israel and likes to support authoritarians globally (like Russia).
Por qué no ambos?
It’s a vassal state to any country that has acquired some unredacted files.
Russia doesn’t need to buy a country.
They need to buy exactly 1 person.
I love America. Every time I see them helping kill someone I get a boner!!! /s
So more war crimes. Yay. Proud to be an American were at least I know I’m shackled to a government run by pedophiles, corporations, and foreign interests.
Let’s make everyone in the U.S. vote and see what happens. I feel like at least once before the great experiment totally implodes we should just try that once since we are so fucking free and are the best fucking democracy ever……
The one thing putting the brakes on the far right in Australia is the fluke that we put compulsory voting into our constitution (it was an experiment at the time, I’m inclined to think it worked out). While we have, perhaps, more than our share of fucked up rabid racist assholes, they have to get over the hump of the majority of not shitty people, and so far it’s failed to happen. The Overton window, neoliberals and Murdoch media have done significant damage but some sense of sanity prevails.
After your revolution you might consider it but I suggest Open Democracy (no elections, random selection yearly or so from the populace to form government bodies. Ala the original Athens democracy. Representative has shown itself to be not representative and easily corrupted, we should move on. )
We want a technocracy, randomly selected individuals picked to fill roles in government based on their area of expertise. If all education is free and accessible, nobody is at a disadvantage. The bar for expertise can be pretty low too, like x years of work experience or any post-secondary education. There will still be that 30% of the population, who would normally vote as right as possible, to fuck shit up. But the majority will actually rule. You can only serve once and are compensated fairly for the damage it will do to your career. Representative Democracy is a failed experiment.
Problem is there’s maybe ten out of a few hundred million Americans I trust running agencies like the FDA or EPA, yoinking randos from some podunk town to legislate on the national scale is guaranteed to go down in flames.
I think we’re just too big. Too much power is centralized at the federal level trying to balance interests that are too far removed. I think we should break up in ~6 smaller chunks with far more autonomy while maintaining EU style trade and travel so there’s still a sense of cohesion.
You are the best democracy ever?
Big fucking LMAO!
Poe’s law rears its head once again. Here is the /s.
Who would you stop from voting?
Just typing this on the fly but one major concern is Trump is literally sending his private army to “watch the polls.” There’s also a whole lot more going on. I’m not saying this to be a dick but you should look up everything that’s happening with voting rights and the midterms and scotus and how voting works in the U.S and the various mechanisms of voter suppression state by State.
