They could be confusing it with “Middle America”, which sometimes includes Colombia and Venezuela but that doesn’t explain Ecuador and Peru, which have always, in any context, been South American.
Yes, those countries are on the South American continent but, in relation to both of the Americas, they exist in the center.
Also, it does say the war is also known as the “Second South American War”, so there is that as well.
Sure but at least in American English no one would refer to this region as Central America.
Which is probably why the authors note that the war is known by two names.
