Where is F-Droid?
app lounge fetches apps from google play store and fdroid, fdroid results get shown first
Fucking Lumo? The thing they spam in ads about being superior to OpenClaw? Ok, I will bite. What’s the catch?
it has a cat logo? meow meow :3
/e/OS does not take security seriously. They are often 1-2+ months behind on Android security patches, leaving you vulnerable to literal dozens of high severity vulnerabilities. You would probably be better off with LineageOS.
Maybe the got their shit together since I last checked, but hqving that history and being at the very least 1 month (usually more) behind for years is a very bad look for a ROM that bills itself as private and secure.
According to this well known comparison table they still havent changed: https://eylenburg.github.io/android_comparison.htm
They also leave plenty of proprietary binary blobs in the ROM.
I use aurora instead of google play. How does app lounge compare?
I have both, and to be honest it’s about the same.
I love Ecosia!
@blinfabian You went from Windows directly to Arch? That’s hardcore!
i used mint for a short period of time first, now im on arch for 1,5 years i think
@blinfabian Respect! I tried Ubuntu briefly and couldn’t stand it, been on Fedora since
Arch Linux is a very good distribution, but I would definitely not recommend it to the public at large.
I think most people should probably use something like Fedora or Mint.
For advanced users, either Arch, NixOS, or Gentoo.
I am loving Fedora KDE after using mint for ages. It feels like a nice blend of macos and windows but with real control. It’s very nice on a laptop. And I would love to have Kwin on every computer I use
this is jist what i personally use. to new linux users i would always recommend fedora kde or an arch based distro thats easily installed
+1 for Mint. Super easy to use, a lot of config can be tweaked directly in the UI, and it has old style GNOME vibes without all the mad workflow that GNOME 3 forces upon you.
I’ve begun my switch over to Mint from Windows. Its kinda wild to suggest normal users to switch to Arch of all things. Netflix (and streaming apps in general) straight to Jellyfin is also a stretch because there are… extra steps
Yes, the Netflix -> Jellyfin conversion doesn’t make much sense.
It would’ve made more sense if it was Plex -> Jellyfin. Because the extra steps are the same.
Let’s not start, please.
Sad thing is librewolf and Lumo sucks. Use Vivaldi and LeChat instead.
Vivaldi is closed source “we pinky promise” proprietary software?
Yeah, just like Steam and World of Warcraft, don’t you use them? What’s your point? Should I leave a similar comment under the Steam guide you posted?
I personally think it’s a little more nuanced than open source = always good, proprietary = always bad.
I agree with your overall sentiment, but your examples are kinda strange. There are so many viable open source browsers out there, but how many open source video game markets with AAA games are around?
Isn’t “viable” subjective though? If you are allowed to deem open source games not viable, then isn’t it a bit hypocritical to judge people for deeming open source browsers not viable, for their personal criteria?
Everyone draws the line somewhere, that’s exactly why I said I agree with your sentiment. I’m not the type of guy that only uses specific hardware because the BIOS/UEFI fw is open source.
Steam isn’t a game though, is there an alternative to Steam that’s open source?
highly recommend PeerGOS over Nextcloud

I imagine most people aren’t willing to pay a subscription for their search engine
I would like to plug Mailo. Its explicitly privacy focused, has a free tier and even has child inboxes with more restrictions. Its like $75 per year and I have had nothing but great luck with it.
I use Ageis auth for my proton account’s 2FA token and ente auth for all my other 2FA tokens
I don’t use google photos or nextcloud, I use ente photos.
I don’t use opera or librewolf, I use brave, tor and mullvad browser sometimes when I use mullvadVPN
First I’m hearing about app lounge, I was already using f-droid for some things
Recommending Arch from Windows is a hot take.

Came here to say the same thing
The average win user is not that different from a child with an iPad.
I think this is just a statement what the person did
Not a recomendaton
CachyOS with KDE setting is less bold. But still bold for casuals.
That’s what I’m going for once I’m done backing up all the things I can’t afford to lose when I wipe the windows drive. Even then, I’m looking at ways to preserve it as a virtual image in case I forgot something. My work provided laptop is unfortunately on windows 11 so at least there’s that in case I need Windows for any reason
Damn the AI RAM price mania, I would have gotten running earlier with just a new drive.
I’ve never seen Magic Earth, but as an OSM contributor, I don’t understand why I’d use a subscription service when all the underlying data is free (as in beer and freedom) and contributed by volunteers (and likely not the app devs). One-time app purchases like OsmAnd I understand because you’re doing stuff with the data like routing, overlays, etc., and that requires development work. But a subscription seems absurd.
I use both. CoMaps when I can, but Magic Earth has a better business data set and better traffic data right now. I also contribute to OSM when I can, but there is a lot of missing data.
Because it’s a refined way of showing that information. Because search actually works. And because it adds traffic data. If you don’t see the value in any of those things than it’s not for you.
Well, I just reverted to an old version of Magic Earth so I could keep getting traffic info. That’s literally the only tjing stopping me from other OSM apps like CoMaps. I wanna know if an accident happened or my usual route is blocked for some reason.
But yeah I hate their shitty subscription lol.
