Lemmy has been one of the best places online for toning down the American emphasis (although I think my blacklist keywords filters help a lot with that… Highly recommended).
Lemmy has better European/Australian representation, but there isn’t much Asian or African representation though.
Well, someone bringing USA into conversation was absolutely expected since it was news community.
The reason I got butthurt and made this post is because how it was brought into conversation, like you know, some “wise observer” perspective, but from someone who couldn’t be really characterized as wise.
It’s the first thing. Glad to see it working. I do still have to ignore a lot of USA-centric political memes and it annoys me that political content doesn’t stay in the designated political areas.
Yeah, but enshittification started getting to Reddit and it was a wise choice to not stay to see how it goes further, as it will become more and more corporatized.
With Lemmy my problems are only with opinions developers have (spoiler: pro-Russian tankie transphobes). But idea of Lemmy and work put into it still deserve respect.
So as for now I just hope my compatriots will catch up on Fediverse eventually (Mastodon is already quite popular).
Honestly no, I think it’s worse here. I blocked so many communities because they’re just about US politics, but that stuff is still everywhere, even in generic meme communities.
It won’t let me copy/paste the list out of this boost app. As you come across content, keep adding words that are specific to USA (e.g. Trump, POTUS, senator, constitution, NBA, superbowl), don’t add words that are likely to catch other content from other parts of the world (e.g. president, democrat). Communities should be self-evident that are focussed on American content.
I refuse to use any social media app or news app that doesnt have a blocklist. I’d recommend Boost for a Lemmy app and Pluma for an RSS news app.
I probably see more American content than I am putting across, but with training my brain to skip/ignore American content, I’m not too bothered by what I see now.
I would also recommend blocking other things you might fond repetitive or annoying (I don’t want endless content about Israel, Ukraine, police brutality, Apple products, etc) and I block all of this stuff too. Lemmy has enough content now to still show plenty of posts with all that blocked. You just need to be sure to browse “all”.

language barriers are a thing.
Either you’ve blocked half the platform or you’re joking because I constantly fight with others for posting american politics in general communities.

Reddit would allow you to completely ignore USA centric content since it was so big
If you ban all communities on lemmy that are related to the USA or could have posts related to the USA, there would be less than a post a day
I think reddit was more diverse, many local communities, language specific communities, etc.

It’s not even Americans talking about American politics either haha
Must be my filter list then… 20p blocked communities (mostly porn though) and 50 blocked keywords…and increasing.
please share this list of words and communities!
