The moment this becomes an obligation for each person, no matter what, I’ll just quit Discord. I’m tired of stuff like this.

If people want to do bad stuff, they will find a way no matter what anyway.

there’s already real time AI aging filters, once they realise this doesn’t work it’s going to be IDs next, i’m so sick of this bullshit

if a kid wants to find porn, they’re going to find porn, no amount of laws is going to stop them, but the more laws there are the more safe websites and online spaces to explore the new feelings will be inaccessible to them, leaving only the worst possible resources to be exposed to as they discover their sexuality. people writing those laws behave as if they’ve entirely forgotten how it was to be a teen, nor have met a teen in decades

people downvoting you need some more context i believe

conservative leadership’s bigotry isn’t just all yelling about gay frogs, there’s subtlety to some of their tactics. Two things are happening at once here - banning of sexual things, harsher punishments for sexual offenders, broadening the definition of what sexual offences even are, and sexualisation of LGBTQ folks, fearmongering, “think of the children”, implications that transgender people are all perverts (why else would bathrooms or drag queens story times be such big issues?). queer people are being pushed back into the margins, just their mere existence is being pushed to be viewed as “erotic” and “inappropriate for children”

though obviously LGBTQ people are not porn, i hope that goes without saying, the same people who want to ban porn are the ones working very hard to paint queer people as somehow innately “adult only”

Out of curiosity, why go out of your way to not capitalize correctly? Like ‘I’ has to be easiest in any autocorrect.

i don’t have autocorrect on, i also don’t subscribe to the idea that there is a “correct” way to speak or write, languages are tools used for communication, if you can understand me without effort then i used the tool successfully

i do capitalise things when it matters, for various reasons; to make a sentence easier to read, to show respect, to avoid a word being confused for a typo. but overall i just like the look of small letters better

Very peculiar perspective denying the already established language standards of punctuation and capitalization… Autocorrect exists to show you the “corect” way.

For anyone raised in a standard education system, there is effort to read comments like that. We’ve learned to pause, exclaim, incur emotion, and apply tension, all through punctuation and capitalization. Your comments are read as breathless long-winded statements for those of us who still subscribe to language standards…

                Thanks for the response, though.

Same, I still use it at around 15% of my own peak usage, if this gets beyond the testing phase, i’m out as well. Never trusted discords ownership and bussinessmodel, and observing their behaviour the last 4-5 years really cemented that as accurate. Bye, I won’t miss y’all.

For a brief moment, I had a a FB/Instagram account for testing purposes. After about a week, Meta started asking to see my face on camera. Needless to say, that experiments hit a brick wall.

I was just following and liking stuff here and there. Didn’t even post anything, but apparently that was suspicious enough for Meta.

        Audio quality

        • Teamspeak3, Discord and Mumble all use Opus Voice
        • Teamspeak2 and Ventrilo used Speex and eventually CELT. CELT is decent but Opus is better.

WIth current hardware and cheap hosting, setting Opus Voice to max quality is best.

Not federated, but Revolt can be self-hosted and is very similar to Discord in the look and feel from what I have seen (I have it installed, but haven’t tried getting friends to install it and am not hosting). So it could be worth looking into for folks that are used to Discord.

It’s not federated, the developer is specifically against federation. He didn’t even support self-hosting properly and officially, until the community made pullrequests in this regard themselves. Revolt is mainly made to be hosted by the developer himself. Probably just another Discord. Open-sourcing the code doesn’t do anything.

I’ve never quit using teamspeak but I’d never see it as an alternative for the chatting functions of discord (neither private or server wide). Calling and screensharing on it is superior for sure, chatting is garbage.

        • Embedded matrix client and Teamspeak client in a webpage? Selfhost it.

I’m sure it can’t be that hard. I’m planning on rolling out something similar, if it works I’ll like the source code here.

We really need more people working on tech that both has great privacy but also simplicity. Currently you always have to pick between convenience or privacy. Everybody that keeps pushing self hosting doesn’t get that not everybody has the skills or time to set that up.

I work in IT, I do QA, I write test automation code, I setup CI/CD pipelines but the moment you put me on networking stuff I’m done, gg well played. It’s a whole new skillset so if I as someone who grew up and work in a technical job has a hard time with it don’t even think its going mainstream.

Problem is folks won’t move, they’re too entrenched. Look at twitter, it’s still going ok despite having been a cesspit for years now. Or reddit, where some moved, but they moved to yet another enshittified platform: Discord. The amount of crap people ( especially the ones on discord ) will put up with is immense before they even consider switching.

The app will ask users to scan their face through a computer or smartphone webcam; alternatively, they can scan a driver’s license or other form of ID.

comes in response to laws passed in those countries that place guardrails on youth access to online platforms.

Personally this sounds pretty reasonable. I don’t want young children on there. Any expectation of anonymity on Discord, a social network, is not warranted. Ask any number of users who’ve been prosecuted based on evidence turned over by Discord. It’s also US-based

Why shouldn’t young children be able to use Discord? I have kids and want them to be able to use it to chat while they play games with friends and with me.

I have kids too. I’m not singling out Discord here, just pointing out they’re trying to follow the law.

Young kids and social media are inherently a bad mix. Primarily because it promotes antisocial behaviors and they cannot effectively comprehend and consent to the privacy polices and TOS. Hence why adults need to be involved in account creation.

That’s a false dichotomy. Parents can and should protect children. Social media sites can and should protect children. It’s in the social interest. Parents don’t have control over every device a child has access to. Firewalls at schools and libraries are often lackluster

    • the creators of the laws requiring said guardrails should be held personally accountable for every piece of information that gets leaked as a result of their bs “think of the children” arguments.

I feel like we need a less invasive form of age verification or we need actual data privacy laws in the US with some teeth. As it is right now it’s basically a guarantee that your ID and facial data will be in a breach eventually. Seems like every site will require this once it starts.

Interesting. I think most users would assume they’re talking to other adults and might change their language or behavior if they thought they were conversing with children

Age is anything but arbitrary from a law perspective. With these laws there is no expectation of privacy in regards to age. I’d argue there never was, it was just poorly enforced and got normalized
