These dogs really are that long though. I saw one for the first time in real life a couple months ago, it was chasing its tail around a building.

In Germany they are called “wind hounds”, since they only work properly while the wind is blowing
Many think that Windhund/vinthund is referring to wind (sighthounds are fast), but it’s most likely folk etymology. It’s believed the name most likely originated in lower German from the Wends - as sighthounds were mainly known from that region at the time.
Actually, the name derives from the fact that you have to “wind up” their tail before they start working properly.
