The point that they’re making is that it’s a never-ending process to be aware of and guard against, and those who think that they’ve accomplished being “not racist” are often people who actively are racist and don’t see it. Think the liberal speaking over people about their own wants and needs.
Yes, and I was letting them see that they were doing largely the same thing themselves, by not knowing who they were speaking with or where they are coming from.
No, I recognize that this will be something we all have to deal with for our lifetimes. Frankly the person who they thinks they have resolved this are frequently the most die hard racists you’ll meet. I think that’s why there’s so many racists on Lemmy
One thing to keep in mind is that some of us also grew up poor and with extreme neglect and trauma. I actually feel closer to people of color, and immigrants, than I do with my own white Americans. Marginalized people stick together.
And racism isn’t something that is internalized just by the dominant racial population.
You are proving my assertion that those who think they resolved their racism have not done so they have merely ignored it.
lol and I would suggest you learn about projection my friend. We see what we don’t like about ourselves most in other people. I see more love and hope than I see hate and evil because I work to cultivate both daily.
You suggested you could not be racist because you identify with marginalized peoples but that overlooks the fact that these people would also internalize racism as they live in a racist society so what did you fix?

lol…i didn’t say i couldn’t be racist, i said people that do work can break free. i agree that it can be internalized, as I know all of the traumas laid into us by society, our families, our countries, our socioeconomic standing, etc.
I am a practicing buddhist and long time meditator. I know the difference between the thoughts that arise from my programming and my true self. I am not my body, I am not my mind.
And I disagree that people can break free. You literally used a racist notion, namely that marginalized people cannot be racist as a virtue of their race, to argue that you were not racist because you identify more as that population. Does that mean your work was successful or does it mean you missed this bit of yourself?
I think we can be cognizant of our racism but I don’t think it ever gets resolved. I think you can do work to reduce it but it pops up in places and in ways we do not expect because it is pernicious.
