He’s throwing his weight behind them because (a) he has nothing left to gain from the liberal establishment and (b) these underdogs are far more radical and more pliant, so if they win he’ll reap more concessions than from their liberal opposition.

The reason we don’t have any of those nice things in the USA is due to multiple factors. But the one that bothers me the most is: conservative voters are willing and happy to let leopards eat their faces as long as the leopards say mean things about “liberals” while doing it.
