Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How does Minitool Partition Wizard or similar software able to wipe the drive its installed on.
3·1 day agoWouldn’t it be simpler than that and just be that the application is running from RAM?
Though I suppose if we’re talking about Linux you could move root to a disk in RAM.

12·5 days agoIsn’t that why we have smartphones and computers? Personally I’ve never contemplated going to the kitchen to do such things.

0·5 days agoWhat the fuck is a “point?” This sounds like some Windows bullshit.

Linux@lemmy.world•Does Terminal use actually make sense in the real world?English
1·11 days agoI’m not sure how else I’d configure the servers and networking equipment I’d use, and I have no idea how I’d deal with Kubernetes cluster management without CLIs. I haven’t used Windows in ~15 years but going back to its GUI all the time? Fuck that.
I’ve got a Roomba and Braava jet and I think the opposite: the software (navigation) is shit but the hardware (cleaning-wise, not including the lack of lidar here) is great.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•When you were a kid/teen, how often do you have conversations with your parents? What is your relationship like now? And do you think there is a correlation?
3·12 days agoI used to incredibly close. We could very comfortably — I’d almost say like friends except the fact they did actually parent and never allowed us to walk all over them.
It’s kind of sad now, I don’t talk to my parents often anymore. We live a few states apart.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Has Trick-or-Treating died in your area, and what is to blame?
14·17 days agoMy wife I walked around our area in Los Angeles this year and many areas were completely full of trick or treating. Strangely though some of the most expensive neighborhoods had zero Halloween decorations and no activity.

0·18 days agoHonestly their products are trash. I spent a fortune on a Roomba and Braava jet and while their actual cleaning is marvelous the tracking drives me batshit insane — if it weren’t for me working from home they’d never get anything done.
I’ve regretted not buying from Roborock so much. iRobot’s customer service is outsourced with lots of “fuck you” energy too. So yeah, they’re basically like any other American brand that either sells out and/or enshittifies everything.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Multilingual people, do you feel better about yourself than those that only speak one language? Monolingual people, do you envy/admire Multilingual people? And why?
6·19 days agoI know Japanese, Mandarin and Spanish (and used to play around in Esperanto). I always loved learning languages but it wasn’t until later in life living in Los Angeles and speaking/hearing Spanish daily and then traveling to Mexico with my wife (who’s from there) that I really started feeling the benefits.
Knowing another language really opens doors in so many ways even if sometimes it’s only in small “insignificant” ways.
The first time I felt California was home was walking into a convenience store and being greeted in Spanish and carrying on the conversation like it was nothing.
Traveling to Mexico and being able to converse and learn all about another culture while being completely immersed in it is a powerful experience.
I don’t feel superior or better than others but when I talk to my monolingual friends and family back home I do feel a bit sad that they can’t understand or take part in some of those experiences.

Programming@programming.dev•Why do some people fork repos but make no changes to them?
5·20 days agoThis reminds me of a legacy Rails 3.2 app that used a fork of the official Ruby on Rails only for one commit that backported some one-liner bug fix. This was at an old job in the Rails 6 days, getting it on the latest official version was definitely an adventure (no unit tests + tons of spaghetti code + a dash of currency conversions stored as Postgres floats).

4·20 days agoIf you see me in public I’m usually chaining a bunch of tunnels together in some odd way to get around the poorly configured WiFi and actually secure my traffic.

0·21 days agoThis is incredible! I just feel like I’ve seen this headline a trillion times and yet the biodegradable stuff is never used (at least in the US, I’ve seen biodegradable packaging being used in Mexico quite a bit).

News@lemmy.world•Trump demands ‘no early voting’ in latest threat to upcoming elections as California and New York ballots roll in
2·21 days agoI have a feeling your voter registration isn’t up to date. Probably you’ll have to vote in person for this one.

The good news is Marie Sharp’s hot sauces are also available (in the US at least). I’ll definitely be buying that brand even if I have to pay more.
By the way, the reason I discovered this is that I enjoy reading food companies’ origin stories because they’re usually pretty inspiring. Other businesses oftentimes seem to be started by those who are already wealthy but with foods it’s about skill and flavor.
