  • “You’re emulating retro games wrong” is not the best title. For example, Dosbox Staging enabled the CRT filter by default at some point; there is no graphical interface, you need to open a file and switch a cake to revert it. Moreover, there was no indication that the black lines were not a bug but were a filter.

Playing DOS games on operating systems which do not support DOS programs natively is still emulation. However, the number of DOS games which utilised CRT effects are much fewer such that I primarily played DOS games in 2022–23 and none of them made use of CRT. However, the black lines were enabled till I figured it out (because there were no support requests surprisingly, and the default filter being changed was mentioned in an unrelated request regarding bad performance issues—where it was made known and the recommendation was made to change the setting).

The (slight) problem is with the title itself. It is not a big issue for me, but the statement made in the title is the problem because it is only in a comment that it was mentioned not all old games use CRT effects. Clickbait might not be the best word for describing the situation, but the title will be annoying for many who play old games which were not designed for CRT effects. But then, it is not a big problem and I more or less ignored it (to be clear, for being wrong as far as the title itself goes) before seeing this thread. It would’ve been better to state directly instead that many old console games and games of the adventure genre, among others, were designed with these filters in mind and for practical reasons (like actually having the graphics show what they were meant to show) because like in your other comment that specific scene does not show the background at all without the effect, and it will be a fairly common occurrence for games which were designed to use the CRT effect.

  • I wonder how long till the middle class, many of whom are unfortunately fine with the least fortunate only being in a desperate situation, riot from facing more and more desperation themselves. You need economic policy exactly to prevent things like riots because they are inevitable once enough people are starving that the state cannot suppress them.

I completely am opposed to the entire system by the way, of the least fortunate and those others who never were fine with these things, those who never intended harm on anyone, being forced into helpless situations. What I mean is, Russia is going to probably feel the brunt of this war for at least a decade and somewhat probably more, since out of the two countries in it they’re the ones who have buried their heads into the ground and are aggressively choosing ignorance about how they’re breaking up the various systems in place which were meant to ensure they can continue to lead their normal lives (which is heavily dependent, because we do not live in a world where the aspiration is to learn to be technically capable of making everything we use; that would also be impossible anyway, at least in the same scope, without a lot of cruel systems in place. Those systems themselves people either look at and acknowledge, or prefer it remains unsaid, or are outright hostile on mention with a variety of accusations of being disruptive put forth). Apparently these systems are unnecessary and Russia will transcend all.

In my opinion though, soon too many will suffer for the state to manage. And many of the rioting will also come from the thoughtless parts of the common population which supported the war fully for glory. It has always happened—they will pretend like they were among the reasonable who never had a stance on the war (if not the reasonable who opposed the war) and will play the victim when shown by random persons around to be one who excitedly cheered on the invasion.

One thing that goes unsaid is the populations who take a side out of ‘helplessness’ though. I live in India, a place which wants to be present day Russia and is inching there, and my own family and just about everyone in the neighborhood and broad community of the middle class have ‘taken a side’ already and go along with things so as to not face the circumstances which ‘unwanted’ rebels face. These are the people who are the ‘good, ordinary, non-violent’ people. The ones who do not go along with it are considered scum, even by ordinary politically natured people who are publicly ‘against’ these things, or are considered problematic and disruptive to peace by those who would have, in better times, been neutral (and bury their heads in the ground at thoughts like what if they were the ones who could not simply make a choice to secure safety for the immediate future; rather had no option but to suffer). The ones who really oppose the controlling powers from the core of their being are usually seen as fools and die soon enough in most cases, because it is easy to lose everything you have if you really do so more than the ‘I publicly oppose but co-operate and obey’ way. There is passive support for the controlling sides usually, when people come across a situation where cruelty is thrown in their face and a decision is demanded by the situation. Choosing to co-operate with the repressors is what is usually chosen. And when directly confronted by ones from that side, passive support becomes active support, as much as is deemed necessary by these people to not face problems themselves. The ones who do not side with the controlling side are guaranteed to suffer.

A few even here on beehaw turn their heads away and justify it on the basis of people feeding their families (literally not a joke), which had gone tolerated for days and probably still is despite me following the guidelines of the broad ‘be(e) nice’ rule, by putting forth the point of how exactly those opinions are harmful to the most helpless. Which is why I have limited my interactions here to a degree; this was supposed to be the nice place😔 I already do not interact on the broader public internet (at all) because it is much worse than this. Coming back to the actual thing I was putting here though, how do people ever expect things to not get messed up to extreme situations then, because this is what is seen among large parts of populations almost everywhere. There is a reason things fall to extreme situations. It is never as simple as ‘bad ones are winning against good ones’ because the ones paying full attention know this—the ‘bad ones’ are not capable of doing a single part of their bad deeds without some or the other form of support. And they crumble in the face of an unyielding ‘no’.

  • Yeah, I’m at 1080p and have usually not had any issue with the games I’ve wanted to play. From Might and Magic Book One (1986) to Monster Hunter World/Iceborne. But I’m very selective with the games I play—usually do not tolerate bugs or unnecessarily resource intensive ones where it would’ve needed a lot less for the same thing with more care taken.

  • And no matter how you keep avoiding the point, doing illegal remote tech work and handing the paycheck directly to the government, is not any different than doing legal remote tech work and handing taxes directly to the government.

Do not worry. People like me know to work around that, even with restrictions in place to stop doing basic work. The thing I ‘do’ is to write books which will be free to read and download for all. The plan was to make it CC BY, but the option of CC BY NC is becoming increasingly attractive. In either case I cannot monetize it, and will provide no ‘exclusive’ offerings behind paywalls on places like patreon. It is legally not the sale of goods in any way, and any earning will be extremely low. I’m not avoiding any topic. There are no taxes to be paid unless I make a substantial earning (even in an excessively taxed land for the not wealthy), which I say right now is less likelier than any work a thousand times worse with some marketing has a better chance to do. I’ve accounted for this already because I care about it—and the bitterness of such words does not go away.

On the other hand, the oppressed in North Korea who have not made that choice to join up with legitimacy at the cost of other people sure as hell have no way to complain to you about it. Just because they cannot be heard doesn’t make their lives but worse them the people who contribute to it for any reason whatsoever.

And about being arrested or killed is a bad topic to take up with me.

For 3 years I faced regular starvation, sexual harassment supported by the whole family and no good person gave an eff, and unbearable pain which made me want to die everyday. Because I was born in a house of religious fanatics in a place where there is not really interest in stopping these things rather than making a political headline after death. No one gives an eff because it is common. It is normal here. Such things are ‘fine’. This is after being emotionally and mentally abused for around 15 years without retort from the time I was a toddler (as far as I can remember is when I was a toddler), which increased till I was purely suicidal for years from around 10 years old. My mother tried to stab me dead when I was a toddler (which was revealed much later but I do not remember personally), tried to prove me legally crazy when I wasn’t an adult yet and handed me over to religious fanatics with the reason of me being possessed by demons—after I was forced into religion, which caused a number of issues I couldn’t deal with, since before I was in nursery school. Despite having good grades I couldn’t secure employment because of the issues I had—issues I have fixed in time by facing everything, no thanks to ‘good people’—which meant no employment and many attempts to, smugly, push me towards ‘living for myself’. No employment. No shelter. No preparedness. It is not absolute death but back then it more or less would’ve meant death to me. I couldn’t even get my own service offering of cheap books going because of regulation which is meant to stop solo businesspersons rather than aid them. The playing field of business is not levelled for those with nothing, it is set to crush those with nothing for those who have everything. The way I have survived, is by literally adapting to require less. For the sake of survival I eat around one meal every 24 hours—or more—these days. Nothing fancy and things I prepare with basic vegetables myself to ensure no nutrition is lost. I basically made a way to work in a profession in which I had no skill by developing the skill myself, because ‘support’ is a luxury in this endeavour I cannot rely on.

There is a person behind every comment and post you see. I have faced death for years now. In fact the lifestyle I live with the meal for an entire day is much safer than what I had in the past, even with more food to sustain myself back then. You could’ve done better than assume I have not faced death—or my situation is stable enough that I won’t face it in the next few years.

  • The people who suffer due to not making that decision will feel otherwise.

And it is nothing alike. Health Ministry and civil service are nothing like being employed in a military government where funds go directly to the government which aids in putting the systems of both suppression and oppression in place.

It isn’t quite in the level of North Korea but I live in a pretty bad place and pretty much on the opposite side of those who made the decision to join up. Those people might complain but the ones who have made the decision not to aid anyone who harms everyone else have it much worse. In my situation it is their fight for luxury against my, and others’, need for basic sustenance and protecting our basic dignity (which usually isn’t respected) due to that one choice. In a place like North Korea the difference will be much worse, however incomprehensible it may seem.

  • The problem stated here is an extreme oversimplification of an already extreme oversimplification, but at least it covers some individuals and political entities doing horrible things. As for any actual solution, it is punishable under the law for hurting religious sentiment, is going to attract the hatred of all who are not the most powerless (from every religion and group) for disrupting the economic way of life, and is going to attract the attention of the countless Trump-size trolls in the country (a popular example). In addition to that, it is going to attract the ire of those persons who feel that making India the next China is the solution to countering China. The population is no more than a resource in a classified labour intensive region, however flawed the system may be, and capital intensive is not as simple as it sounds. The whole country depends on the existence of a powerless segment, and parts of the world depend on those in the country who depend on the existence of a powerless segment.

In other words, get ready for many people with a vested interest in the cruel structure of the country to treat you like the most evil person in the world.

Oppressed communities also have a tendency to oppress a segment of their own, so you will have those who believe that every oppressed side is composed of saint-like persons will also be against you—in this world where it is common to choose a ‘lesser evil’. It goes without saying that the oppression itself is unacceptable, of course

That is on a large scale. On an individual scale, those who does not follow the principle of harming others for personal gain are seen as fools, and as easy targets for harming for personal gain. It doesn’t matter how nice a person is, behind the niceness is usually hidden this acceptance. I would say that such persons who refuse to harm, however indirect the harm may be, are not fools but idiots who refuse to understand such a way of living which is dependent on cruelty. And I will continue to be such an idiot. If anyone is a fool, it is the persons with those acceptances. They mess around so much because they aren’t happy. And the most unfortunate cases are ones who try to co-operate with the ones who would harm them with the hope of reduced hostility, rather than wholly refuse to co-operate with them. Maybe even grouping up to pressurise rebelling forces to not disrupt the plans of the group. That said, the oppression itself does not get the slightest bit of justification. The attitude to harm another for gain is unacceptable to me.

The current problem is a combination of multi-layered vested interest in cruelty, embarrassment even within the country over admitting to the occurrence of such a thing, and naivety which enables the hand which oppresses oneself—rather than denying it the aid it needs to do such a thing. In other words, political reliance mentioned in the article for the starving vintage was probably part of the problem rather than an improvement. If you are not respected as a human, you do not improve the situation by contributing to the functioning of those who were oppressing you. The situation seems no different from a group which had outlived its usefulness, and I think it is probably what happened. It is a horrible possibility which the vested interest group would have more interest in not knowing than not having it happen. What actually happened will be buried under layers of politics due to the embarrassment I mentioned before. Deducing things is the best one can do to know what happened. However, interested persons can also put in work to solve the problems faced by the village if they desire.

Accepting accusations of being the worst human being around at the moment now…

  • Cool. I could still get Baba is You at some point, and I’ve never played a Zachtronics game before.

I do know one game which 95% meets all conditions put—Heroes of Might and Magic 3’s base game without mods so far. The game has a ‘fan’ trap where they tell just about everyone that a popular mod is either the definitive or best way to play. I played that first. I later played without mods, it was many times more complex and somehow better balanced. I felt abusive because the mod, at that particular time, had a first time load screen which claimed the original makers did not know what they’re doing—and merely stating anytime that you prefer it without mods would incite open hostility from many, even when no reference was made to the horrible methods used. The game itself, however, fully utilises having practical knowledge and using it to strategise which method you’ll use against your enemies (for example counter attack, drain their armies and resources, or simply charge at them with full freedom of how to go there and to adapt) and giving you freedom with hundreds of possible strategies to play with, and the game involves the simulation of choosing any side who range between the most evil to the lesser evils all fighting each other as similarly minded factions (and doesn’t really play into the harm of civilians in the game itself). There is something really enjoyable about it even if some maps could last 10 hours at a moderate pace, and even longer if you simulate a show of force with complete map domination and capture (which can be useful when you can carry over the hero levels to the next map, which is stated beforehand).

I’m playing this currently. I’m also looking into the enjoyability of wholesome sexual content, and the enjoyability of the comedic evasion of characters from people who want to do sexual acts with them but which will only lead to trouble later. But these come later and not from games.

  • so I don’t understand why you’d reference the very same article as a justification as to why my suspicions are wrong.

Except I gave specific reasons for why your justifications are based on things which aren’t accurate rather than merely citing the article. You don’t have to believe it. You can question it. You, however, disputed it at the start but went on to express, and in a way that is almost entirely but not completely expressive with implication doing the rest, that both the article and the poster had malicious intention. That is not expressing doubt. That is disputing, that is stating that someone was wrong. That itself was done in both a manner which gives no proof, for all your demands of it so far that others prove what they say, that the article or the poster had malicious intention. This would not be required if you expressed genukne doubt and sought more clarification in good faith. Instead, you disputed and attributed malice.

But I do care for the defaulting assumption of bad faith on my part and repeated uncharitable readings of my posts. I at no point ever made any claims about Tardigrada, nor have I cast any doubt upon their character anywhere in this thread.

    To quote you

In which case, this only really makes sense to get mad at if you find yourself having particular hate for things like “the North Korean economy having slightly more money in it,” or “U.S. sanctions getting bypassed.”

You can call it whatever you want and say that is indeed isn’t attributing any implied behaviour to the poster. You replied to the post expressing that the only real possibility of sense to be made is this is driven by having particular hate for an implied not-harmful activity. You expressed such a thing while directly replying to Tardigrada’s post while not mentioning that it wasn’t directed towards Tardigrada.

You also confidently made this claim on the basis that the North Korean economy runs on the primary basis of personal spending done by the civilians in a relatively free region where people are generally allowed to do what they want even with the presence of law, which is the kind of economy where governments would care about the (segments of the) general, non-affiliated with government populations having more money and encourage such situations.
