Conservatives don’t care about small government.

I see this often from (presumably) liberals.

I came from a conservative family and held conservative / libertarian beliefs most of my life. These people really, really do want small government. Saying that they don’t makes it impossible to understand their motives – and we really do have to understand where people are coming from.

To complain that their political leaders sell out those ideals for the sake of buying votes is fair, but only if you admit that same set of perverse incentives is not unique to any party.

They both make propositions that could be true or false. They are not non-overlappping.

The whole idea of “personal truth” must become socially unacceptable.

All of us need to understand beliefs as being on a scale that never gets all the way to 0% nor to 100%

All our beliefs have priors, based on the evidence so far, which then get updated as we take in new evidence. This is how scientists and modern philosophers are trained to think.

This is what needs to displace faith.

I still am 100% opposed to enforcing speech. Don’t give someone a fine for saying the N-word, just treat that person as you would anyone who is vulgar or objectionable.

But I do see value in cultural shifts that bend in the direction of greater inclusivity and tolerance. I am with you in that I will absolutely not go along with ones I don’t see as authentic or valuable (eg “Latinx”, or for example I am a heteronormal male who presents as male. I don’t bother adding “he/him” under the photo in my work profile)

The religious are a threat in direct proportion to how much they actually believe their ignorant and credulous horseshit, and which specific flavor of horseshit they credulously believe.

As has been pointed out, radical Jains are not much of a concern. Radical monotheists who believe in both an Afterlife and a Judgement Day – are a direct threat to civilization in much the same way that racists are.

It’s easy to forget that record numbers of US citizens have gone from proudly having belief with no evidence in a Sky Daddy, to not having any affiliation with anti-reason traditions

As a kid and young adult, I used to say “American” to mean “Citizen of the USA”

Then I started working with multinational companies and a big chunk of my team was in Mexico and other parts of central/south America.
