I feel old reading that text, but I completely agree with the content. I prefer to use words… but sometimes images can express the intention better than the words can.

(funny thought - Ideograms might be peak language since they can have temporal/cultural “intonation” baked in… Emoji is just western cultures catching up with Chinese/Korean/Japanese Kanji)

  • I might be too late for this to see any traction, but I support storage in the front of a vehicle being called a chest, and storage in the back being a trunk… I think this beats frunk/trunk/brunk.

A bus or plane, where cargo is beneath the passengers and accessed from the side is clearly, then, the holster.

Canteen goes on the trunk, gun in the holster, and bandolier on the chest. Western.

  • Semi-related. I switched to Firefox about a year ago, when the Manifest v3 was forced into Chrome. About 2 months ago, I started getting prompted to solve a captcha when using google search, since my traffic was “unusual”. This appears to be a javascript issue where FF doesn’t respond to some server-side tracking correctly.

    I now use DuckDuckGo.

I’m tech savvy, but have sometimes been willing to sell my data for convenience (don’t shoot me). But I’m not willing to sell my convenience for convenience: break my ad-blocker or make me captcha to search - fuck right off.

Getting off gmail is going to be hard, but I’m exploring options. Big Tech companies are doing a lot of foot-shooting right now.

They think they won, and can enforce their will, but I’m optimistic that they haven’t.

  • Corporate support can be a big deal.

In a previous life, I routinely blocked anything from a free cloud host or cert provider. There was rarely a business justification for accessing a site or service hosted on DigitalOcean or signed by LetsEncrypt. Sure, get an SSL cert and host for your personal project - so I wasn’t mad at the services - but it was a signal that the endpoint was not trustworthy beyond the TCP packets.

I suspect that AWS/GCP/Azure has made that much harder.

  • We can choose a salad (or burger) without shit… but not next week at this point. Gotta pick one - or let others pick one for you.

Afterwards, please find your local precinct and be part of the discussion. “Both parties” have been captured by money/capital, but only because we let them. At least on the dem side, the rules we have allow us to outnumber the money, but only if we show up on November 4th.

Edit: Just to be clear - Show up on Nov 3 and vote for your preferred entree of the options available, but show up after too.

  • As a occasional bleeding edge buyer - I disagree with the motive of ‘look at me’. (caveat: This post is entirely ‘look at me’, but I’m proving my point, not desiring attention, and have never even thought about my purchases this way until now)

I had an HTC Magic - one of the very early Android phones - not because I wanted to be cool, but because I wanted the tech and google was still this sort of open, consumer-friendly company at the time vs Apple. That phone was pretty solid compared to the candy-bar or flip phones of the era, aside from battery life, but compared to modern smart phones it was garbage.

I had an OG Rift VR headset (CV1). It did what it claimed, but it was low resolution, clunky, heavy, and unpleasant to use. But now we have Steam’s Frame.

When I was a teenager, working retail at a tech store, I saved up to buy an early LCD monitor. Now you can’t even buy CRTs outside of niche vendors.

I want quality EVs. I never bought a Tesla, but I wanted one before the crazy came out and just couldn’t afford it. Now we have every auto manufacturer making EV options.

I want quality folding phones, but my normal shape phone is still functional and I haven’t needed to buy a new one for a few years. When I do, it’ll probably fold. I’ll be v3 or so by that time, but still showing there’s a desire.

I want to be clear that I’m not disagreeing with your ‘let others work out the kinks’, but sometimes I’m fine with having the first iterations because I want the resulting tech.

Consider this my investment strategy - but instead of personal profit, I’m investing in innovation.

I think my point still stands. Think both sides are wrong? Pick a side and help fix it; just get involved in your local politics as well as the national ones.

I think the number of overall real human people who are for real human rights is vaaaaastly higher than the number of ghouls out there trying to take power by force. Get involved.

I’ve been to several No-Kings protests (example, among others) and the number of Palestinian flags and the love those people get is undeniable. I don’t know anyone who is in support of genocide. I think there’s a very vocal minority of “people” - but probably a lot of money - that influence where policy goes. We can oust a zionist and/or corrupt politician before they become the front-runner by being in the gears. I think we do that by getting involved

It might not be fast, but it’ll be faster than giving up. Get involved.

In the shorter term, do you think that - of the options we have at this moment - there is a worse choice?

How about you vote against them while getting involved.

  • Mad at current candidates?! Join your local org; make better candidates. Protest by becoming a delegate instead.

Red or blue or green – more of us involved at the lower levels means more representation at ‘the top’. (at least Democratic; I don’t know how the republican party works)

If we are staring down the barrel of a Gavin Newsom presidential run, and we all think that’s a terrible idea (right?), we still have ability to push for and find better candidates by being part of the local precincts, who send delegates eventually to the national committee.

Where do you think those ‘super delegates’ come from, who is helping pick how to spend DNC advert money? The people who elect DNC leadership came from precincts.

  • I wonder how many em dashes are real vs interpreted.

I love an em-dash, but I have never typed one on purpose; they are all just two minus in a row and I use them wrong – with a space around (*inspect source to see that lemmy translates for me). I abuse them like I abuse semicolons. They are a typographical tick that indicates a pause or pivot when I translate my thoughts to text.

I can imagine a human manuscript editor turning punctuation like a comma into an em-dash when it makes sense, but I can’t imagine a developer ever specifically typing out one – with the need to either know or look up the unicode for it. The only relevant place would be a comment, but even then IDE’s are not generally known for their tendency to replace typed characters with something else.

Maybe some tool in the pretty-print/code-formatter ecosystem added that as a feature? But var-- is so common that I can’t imagine that’d be a good idea, even in a comment.

  • I fully believe there’s a huge amount of money and effort in making a studio – but it seems like killing off a known brand wholesale like this just should result in a new brand that is the successor.

‘Friendship ended with Bioware, Now OrganicWare is my best friend’ kind of energy. We were never there for EA’s involvement. We wanted These People*.

*First link I found, you get the point, but it might not be accurate for the whole team.

Gaming is getting harder with economy and silicon prices – but that means we can just take the stories we want to tell and do so without 4A graphics.

  • I fear for my kiddos because of this.

It’s now feeling offensive to approach people in public for any reason. As a full grown adult who is married, I feel awkward approaching someone at like a library reading a book I’ve read - they don’t want the interruption, they aren’t here to meet people; I get that. I’m just wanting to share my experiences and maybe make a friend.

Trying to find a partner is way harder.

I go out of my way to be gregarious in public spaces because I don’t want the normal to be people trapped in their bubbles and never interacting with the rest of the world. I’ve found that people sometimes light up when they are talked to, and that keeps me doing it.

I’m an introvert and it’s hard. You can do it too! Make small talk.

  • I’d encourage that the voting is the first step for some people.

Voting in the midterms is a fairly minor portion of the population; which is frightening. Get more people voting here means more people involved.

The vast, vast majority of people are just normal folks who want to be able to live. The more people voting on either “side” of the spectrum, the better the choices will become.

Do more than vote: Go join your local precinct - red or blue or green - and ensure the people who go to district and then to state and national have your values. There are dozens of votes a year, not just in November on even years.

  • I HATE this part. I have no power to just not invest, because Vanguard or whoever owns the portfolio and they think this stuff is just going up-up-up, but they are playing with my money since I only have 4 flavors of their choosing for my 401k.

They might be right in the short term, and this used to be a thing (I think, in my parent’s age) where you could assume that number-goes-up over time and you could ignore minor dips, and maybe it’s still true for a long enough duration… but:

In this thread, I think we all see that this isn’t sustainable, but we, normal people just hoping to retire someday, don’t have the ability to disconnect from the bubble even if we want to. There are too many public companies involved and they’re all interconnected.

I despise that I’m probably invested in spacex, nvidia, oracle, etc. I’d sacrifice short term gains to let other people take this risk if I could.
