I think the MAGA version includes variations of deliberate leak of the virus for political purposes. This guy is saying something that really shouldn’t be that controversial—it may have escaped a lab doing gain of function by accident, through negligence. Which from the get go has always been a reasonable possibility, and has happened in other contexts before (Reston, VA Ebola monkeys for one—the animals didn’t get out, but died of Ebola when they weren’t supposed to be sick, in a private facility in an office park and there were concerns about aerosol spread at the time, luckily the strain wasn’t a threat to humans as they found out).

We don’t actually have laws that completely apply here, so this is essentially a test balloon / attempt to set precedent. The guy was specifically targeted by CPB due to his past protest of a thing called cop city in Atlanta, he was added to a watchlist with no notification to him, and CPB told him this was a routine secondary screening and that they wanted to search his phone for “child pornography”. Certainly would be better to have a burner or pre-wiped phone but basically I think he was caught unaware coming back from an unrelated trip.

In any case majority of Americans do not expect to have to offer up their digital systems freely outside of warrant-compulsion, which was not in play here.

That said there’s a lot of twisted loopholes they’re trying to use lately like this, so unfortunately even if it’s not the law they may be able to make it the law via this kind of precedent setting.

I don’t know the exact thing; but I think it was discussed a bit in the news mega—basically there’s potential for corrosion and bad maintenance can lead to the stuff (whatever the latent state they’re keeping it in the tank) reacting and the reaction is thermal and sorta keeps itself going/getting worse—it puts off very toxic vapor (hence the evacuation) and they’re trying to slow or limit the reaction by cooling the system—not clear if that can actually avoid awful outcomes or just limit them by limiting the thermal potential overall, etc.?

I don’t have a link for it, but so far the only source for the nuke rumors I’ve seen is a 4chan post claiming that Israel is going to use tac nukes to disable missile bases and possibly get a leadership bunker in Tehran. The post is worded to suggest that the poster is someone inside some aspect of the operation or military buildup which I suppose is getting people to take it more seriously, but it’s an anonymous source on 4chan, so not something credible.
