Work Reform@lemmy.world•99% of CEOs Expect AI-Driven Layoffs in the Next Two YearsEnglish
0·2 months agoThat’s before enshitification sets in and tech companies start jacking up prices and delivering a poorer service. “AI” will become more and more erratic as inputs become polluted with generated slop. The firehose of human knowledge will reduce and so the capabilities of LLMs. Golden age of “AI” is now

science@lemmy.world•Don’t reach for the bug spray: scientists find insects may feel pain after crickets nurse sore antennaeEnglish
31·2 months agoYes, exactly my point. How can an insect feel pain when they’re devoid of the complex machinery that allows them to have pain emotion and connect the pain experience to a self.
I took more issue with the use of “feel” as that’s normally associated with a human experience of feeling. An insect lacks “hardware” to approximate a human experience of feeling.

21·2 months agoTrying to bring the difference between nocioception, experience of pain and having a subjective experience of pain. Different physical and emotional phenomena.
Does a crab look like it’s feeling pain when it yanks one of its claws out? Mostly seems unphased and it has a far more complex biology than an insect.

31·2 months agoFor example, when under anesthesia and having skin pricked without being made aware/conscious that the skin has been damaged and the body is working to restore it. This would be viewed as “feeling” pain as the body adjusts and focuses resources in addressing it. However, the experience of pain was not possible due to lack of awareness impeding a conscious representation of reality.

57·2 months ago“Feel” is something that requires consciousness and a sense of awareness that the pain being experienced is self-related. Consciousness requires complex systems and a nervous system which insects do not possess. Whilst reactive and reflexive actions are performed, whether they experience pain as a personal subjective phenomenon is something that isn’t tested. Reaction isn’t a proxy to consciousness.
Would a bacteria “feel” pain because it reacts to the environment?
I say this as someone that has almost a Buddhist approach to respecting living creatures. However, the science of consciousness and a physicalist approach inform my views.

8·3 months agoAll this shit because a few thousand yanks in key states have epistemophobia. Levels of retardation beyond belief, the biggliest retardation the world has ever seen. Never so many have been so impacted by a bunch of absolute morons. Back in the day they’d have been given a wedgie and been hanging off the coat hanger. But no, let’s listen to the idiots with money. Dumb fucks

Open Source@lemmy.ml•Paying without Google: New consortium wants to remove custom ROM hurdles creating an open source alternative to Google Play IntegrityEnglish
8·4 months agoSome countries are all-in on the digital transition and for a lot of things shops don’t even accept cash anymore. Digital QR code transfers are preferred. Be thankful that the banks that you deal with haven’t gone down this path.
2 factor TOTP exists and is secure enough for corporates to have adopted long time ago. Banks can adopt similar authentication methods but choose not to.
On the OP, not sure what the solution could be. However, going down this path seems flawed.

45·4 months agoIn a lot of counties banks are becoming mobile first. Want to login in the browser? Authenticate with your mobile app to approve. Don’t have a mobile phone with the requisites of the bank? Well, go to the branch, take a ticket, wait and then tell them what you want to do with your money. It’s not just about paying, banks are moving online authentication to be dependent on Google or Apple, whatever poison you pick.
This seems like same shit different flies. Still dependent on some centralised approval which doesn’t help openness and security. We need alternatives to the duopoly but this ain’t it, chief.

This is a crime against humanity.
