  • I’m the type who when I’m not in a relationship long enough I start to think maybe I want one, but then I remember what it’s like to be in one, and remind myself not to be so delusional. I’m very much happier being ‘alone’. Not that I’m actually alone. I have non-romantic relationships. I will admit having two incomes would be nice tho.

  • You are looking at this wrong. That is a false dichotomy. You don’t need to make your friends stop using the other apps. Just ask them to have both and use Signal to chat with you. What they do other than that is their own business. Sure, educate them, but don’t tell them what to do. If they downloaded the other app and you can talk to them there then your good to go delete the other one. Are you worried about missing some post of theirs on it or something? Who cares. You don’t need to see peoples lunches.

  • I’m gonna be super for real with you. If your friends won’t download an extra app to message you on then they’re not really that good of a friend. It’s such a small inconvenience. Omg I have to hit this other button on my touchscreen instead and spend 5 minutes setting it up?

This is how I’d do it. You send a message to your friends on instagram and whatsapp with your signal info and say, “Hey, not gonna be checking [this app] often and won’t have notifs on. Trying to be more responsible about my data, and social media use. If you need me or want to chat hit me up on Signal.”

If their response to that is “Okay well I don’t want to so I won’t talk to you anymore.” Then they’re not a friend worth keeping around anyway. Real friends are the people who will wake up at 3am and come pick you up from the airport when your coming home. Because they actually care about you, and when you actually care about someone you do inconvenient things for them.

Now, if by “friend” you mean some person you’ve never met that you chat with online sometimes and send funny videos to or whatever? That’s not really what I’d call a friend to begin with, and you’ll just have to accept that relationship isn’t very deep and it’s totally normal for them not to want to do something just to talk to you. And in that case you have to decide if you’d rather stop talking to them, or stay on the other apps. That’s entirely a you decision at that point.

  • I’d turn that right back around on you. Why not take lessons from those things? Fossil fuels have done horrible damage to the environment and factory automation has caused major labor relations problems in certain countries. But do you know what they both also have in common with AI? The problems OVERWHELMINGLY come from the top 1% wealthiest people/companies using them. Climate change is not caused by individuals. Individuals using 3D printers/automation are not the ones causing labor issues. And people using AI individually are not the issue. It’s the companies. And in fact in both of those situations as well REFUSING to use the technology at all only harms you and your movement. 3D printing can help individual people deal with a few massive factories monopolizing basic things and wiping out the infrastructure we need to make things locally. Refusing to use fossil fuels at all only leads to personal economic issues because society is so structured around them you can’t avoid it realistically. Then AI is causing these open source projects to be bombarded with new code submissions to the point the only possible way they can keep functioning is to use that very AI to try and sort through it all.

The lessons are that the ones we should be fighting are the rich. Policing the actions of individuals is a losing battle and counter productive.
