In astronomy, Galaxy clusters are just areas where the density of galaxies is above average and voids are areas where the density is below average. Galaxies attract each other, so the material for Galaxy clusters has to come from somewhere, and that somewhere is voids.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•YSK: Flo period tracking app is proven spyware! Here is what you should use instead.
0·7 days agoAny app that you are using to track your medical information is 100% saving that data and selling it off. I don’t know why people are shocked to discover this.
My cats favorite way to lie is to scratch at the food container an hour after she was fed, insisting that it is dinner time
The barges were just a little less than a few meters wide. The manpower to build a 100km long canal that is 2.5-3 meters wide is substantially less than what it takes to dig one 8 meters wide in the era before steam shovels.

Climate@slrpnk.net•Once a Climate Leader, Canada Is Doubling Down on Oil | Mark Carney is counting on Alberta’s oil sands to help him survive Trump’s trade agenda.7·9 days agoSeeing as 96% of Canadian oil exports go to the US because no one else wants bitumen since it is the lowest quality oil and is a giant pain in the ass to refine. India and China have some capacity to refine it, but the current oil crisis is pushing those countries to find suitable replacements so they don’t have to rely on foreign affairs to keep the lights on. It will take a decade to get the infrastructure in place to get any meaningful amount of bitumen from Alberta to across the Pacific. This is just throwing whatever left remains in the Liberal party under the buss to placate Alberta oil companies.
Not really. Most of these old canals were only a couple yards/meters wide and dried up 100 years ago.

We didn’t have any guns in the house growing up, but I know plenty of people who did and so a desk gun is fairly common across the US.

Australia@aussie.zone•'Like driving on bubble wrap': Residents describe mouse plague horrorEnglish
0·20 days agoMice reach sexual maturity at 5 weeks old and can have a litter of 10 mice once a month. You literally cannot TNR your way out of this. You either kill them with poison or they consume everything that is edible in the area and then starve to death. Those are the only options, and I reiterate that you are completely delusional.

Australia@aussie.zone•'Like driving on bubble wrap': Residents describe mouse plague horrorEnglish
0·20 days agoThere are at least 10 million mice in a farming town of a few thousand. More mice are being born a day than you could accomplish that way. You’re completely delusional if you think that is a viable plan.

Australia@aussie.zone•'Like driving on bubble wrap': Residents describe mouse plague horrorEnglish
0·21 days agoI don’t see how TNR is viable when a town is overrun with mice. You’re talking about hundreds of thousands of “surgeries” on animals that have fleeting life spans. And these mice infestations are tens of millions of animals. I did hysterectomies on lab rats during college so I know that it’s not a very long process, but a rat is also 4x bigger than a mouse and it seems needlessly cruel to put an invasive pest animal through a traumatic surgery for essentially no gain.

Dark matter just makes voids more isolated from each other. Our void is still within the greater Laniakea Supercluster, but our immediate area is very sparse. The only galactic merger that the Milky Way will experience is with Andromeda in 1.5 billion years, and maybe with Traingulum a bit after. But there will be a ton happening in the Virgo Cluster next door as those galaxies are all close enough to each other that gravity is the predominant force in the region. But the galaxies in the middle of the cluster will gather towards their gravitational center, while the galaxies at the periphery of the cluster will form a “shell” of sorts. Voids are just the bubbles that remain from the gathering of clusters.
