U.S. News@beehaw.org•‘Publicity stunt’: AOC blasted for publicising egg freezing whilst teasing 2028 presidential run
0·2 days agoIn the negative sense, and pardon the redundancies here:
Racists, sexists, bigots, pedophiles, pedophile supporters, and all other Republicans that I missed.
In the positive sense:
Women and couples that may want to go down a similar journey but don’t have a community that’s open enough to talk about potentially taboo subjects. Especially at a time when women’s rights, including IVF, are under attack by Republicans. AOC documenting her journey gives the journey another voice that may reach someone.
The punchline was right in the drawing.
There are no good white basketball players, my friend.
Hell yes! Its easier to get a new job when you have a job so if its not right, fuck em

Solarpunk@slrpnk.net•Young activists in the Maldives confront climate threats to their island nation
0·5 days agoIf the US survives Trump, I believe the country will be changing for the better longer term.
Lack of voter engagement makes progressive populism policy hard to pass. If there’s a sense of “we’re the most free country in the world, things may not be perfect, but things are better than they would be elsewhere” then the engagement required for change won’t happen.
If things are worse than a year ago, then people might start realizing the government isn’t working and be forced to be more engaged which allows more populism progressive policy to rise to the top.
Climate change is similar, it’s been talked about for so long that until it gets to be nearly unhabitable many people won’t get on board with its existence. But when they do they’ll be fully on board.
Whether the rubber band will bounce back before its too late, idk, could snap. But if we survive.the worst change, the good change will come.
In the US, typically the earlier you see Christmas on sale is an indicator of how poorly sellers predict the economy will be doing between now and Christmas.

But I guess common sense is incompatible with.Christianity.

Socialism@beehaw.org•Zohran Mamdani’s Public Grocery Plan Is a Serious One
0·9 days agoReally cool article!
I lived in a food desert when I lived off campus in college (urban campus). The university kept buying the grocery stores and 7/11 and turning them into housing and unaffordable restaurants your parents could take you to when they visited.
When they finally forced the 7/11 out, students were pretty pissed. They didn’t have enough campus housing, so we were forced off campus into slum lord apartments, with a university that kept closing the places we could get eggs within a 30 minute walk/bus (the university severely lacked parking and discouraged cars). Last I visited, the CVS was forced out by the university too.
After 7/11 protests, the university put out a statement, saying they heard us, they were working with a private vendor and making sure the basics like eggs were cheap. And the eggs were cheap.
Unfortunately the rest if the grocery store was an overpriced unassembled charcuterie board that I shopped at once, when my mom was visiting for thanksgiving. I was living in a windowless 10’x10’ closet in an army cot at that time. Thanks to the cheese that cost half my rent and shitty hipster crackers, when my mom and I sat under the drunkenly drawn chalk target board on the drywall with kitchen-knife-sized-holes, I felt so blessed that I could buy eggs on campus.
The next day, my mom drove me to Aldi where I stocked up on chicken to put in the freezer.
I love Mandami, I think he has the potential to make America better by doing good in NYC. But with all eyes on him, I hope he heeds the warnings listed in the article. They make sense to me, based on my experiences.

Ghazi@lemmy.blahaj.zone•Multiple Major ASMR Accounts Suddenly Removed From YouTube Over ‘Explicit Content’
0·9 days agoI truthfully thought ASMR was a weird section of tiktok where glass bottles got rolled down stairs till they crashed and other things to make weird sounds. I think I’m wrong. I kinda can understand how the breaths in the mics might sound erotic but I just dont see it being as bad as that one porn video on youtube, “legends of chopsticks and sex 2” or whatever the fuck that 1.5 hour long video was where there woman was naked and on a swing in a garden and the guy was eating grapes then decided to throw the grape at her, and she caught the grape in between her legs and it had a weird shloop sound and then after they established that premise, she shot the grapes out. Like this video put the lemon stealing whore to shame, and there was way more nudity and sex than that video. And its not like that video wasn’t just some bootleg thing, it was decent quality and up for years. But if it just somehow escaped the filters, surely the entire nude yoga section wouldn’t?
Idk, YouTube’s porn selection is weird and this seems arbitrary

Memes@lemmy.ml•dont forget to vote! it does nothing but dont forget anyways!
0·11 days agoNew to Lemmy. Is this common from this instance?
I’m no fan of the dem elite, but I’m still a believer that if we’re OK with incremental change and we’re active at all levels of government that we can motivate others to re-engage and take back what’s ours. That doesn’t mean that we wait till we can vote again and try better next time, it means we start creating the society we want to exist. Building up local politicians, and supporting the hell out of places that support us, hell, even supporting the hell out of places that aren’t supporting us right now but have the structure to support us.
