Netflix released the original show “Supacell” with new and original characters, but in the comments, right-wingers are complaining that the protagonists are black. The film quiet place day one was released and had a black protagonist. The character is new, original and coherent. Quiet Place is set in the USA black people exist in the USA, so what’s the problem? If they are going to complain anyway, then why do they ask to make new characters?

The ‘create their own stories’ thing was a ploy. They were either using it as cover to try and conceal their racism or they were betting that people of color wouldn’t be able to make their own works and find an audience. They don’t actually want new black characters; they don’t want black characters at all.

Not always, I’m generally not a big fan of remakes/reboots. But give me new stories, give me black, brown, red, white, rainbow coloured, give me orange… No wait, scratch that last one, orange men can go right fuck themselves.

Or the claim by OP that right wingers are saying this is made up. That’s what I’m going with until I see evidence.

C’mon, this is the internet. Someone said it and meant it.

It doesn’t even seem that weird to me, because there’s a general agreement on the right that minorities in media is bad, and no unified theory to explain why. Inevitably, many will be made up.

there’s a general agreement on the right that minorities in media is bad

Except nobody on the right has ever said that to me, or in front of me, or in anything I’ve watched or read.

So again, I’m going with this is the kind of myth lefties tell each other about the right without ever actually checking the assumption against observations.

Unless you can link to someone saying this, I just don’t believe you.

I think they really mean “I just don’t want to see black people, but that sounds bad, so let me try to come up with something I think sounds better.”

This is how they tell on themselves, when their reaction to Black characters in video games is “I play this for escapism why does it have to be realistic/political/insert_kyle_dogwhistle_of_choice”

You can rarely take the point of any bigot at face value. Words have no value to them. There’s no use in debating them as they are not speaking in good faith. They merely say whatever they feel will help accomplish their goals of oppression and exploitation.

You are trying to make sense of something that doesn’t make sense at all. Racists will lie and make shit up just to be racist.

Don’t think about it too much.

Why they insist on original stories: They don’t see black and white people as same and interchangeable, but as fundamentally different and separate.

Why they still complain: They don’t want black people to be protagonists, this makes black people appear human, can’t have that.

    They’re just shuffling cards.

Conservatives do not mean things when they say words. They’re just constructing excuses to reach whatever conclusion supports the ingroup. Consistency means nothing.

And they think that’s all you’re doing, because they think that’s all there is.

I’m not right wing, but I’m in a few more “free speech” nerd groups where there’s a decent number of right wingers, I’ve never heard of either of those, so I can’t really comment about the specific examples.

With any of these thing’s I don’t think it’s a homogenous group though, you can usually separate them into certain subgroups:

    • People that are really into a setting and will complain about any minor detail being changed. They’ll complain about a character’s hair or nail polish colour being changed just as much as their skin colour. IMO these are usually the majority.
    • Actual racists. Not much more to say here.
    • People who will complain about anything. They changed something? it’s ruined; they kept something the same? it’s ruined.
    • Grifters. Just wants to get money and attention from youtube, will latch on to any criticism of anything if they think an hour long rant video about how “woke ruined x” will get them views. The minority, but by far the loudest. Often overlaps with 2 and 3.

So out of those, 2, 4 and sometimes 3 will still be complaining about new settings that are perceived as “woke”.

Where are you hearing right wingers say this? More importantly, where are you hearing them say this that you don’t just ask them directly?

“Where are you hearing right-wingers say that?” On all social networks, especially YouTube. You can look for the “Supacell” trailer on Netflix and there you will find several comments from right-wingers upset with the series’ cast. Just go into the comments, especially the most recent ones, and you’ll see. The same with quiet place

“Why” implies they act according to some form of logic. The thing is, they’re racists, and racists tend to be fucking stupid.

It’s the same reason people lost their minds about The “Dear White People” series. Many people don’t like getting told their approach is wrong, and since humans themselves see change as a traumatic event, people who don’t know how to properly handle their emotions are going to lash out. In my opinion anyway

Huh. I thought that the new Quiet Place was really quite good, too. I wasn’t aware that people were being shitty about it because the lead character was black.
