I thought Zuniga was a part of the white supremacy faction in Bollivia but I’m not finding any connections with a search engine. Looks like Juan Jose Zuniga was accused of embezzling ~400,000 USD worth of public funds and was part of a group, Pachajchos, who watched over coca production and monitored politics. Morales accused the group of trying to assassinate him.

On the flip side, Morales was and may still be seeking a 4th or 5th term as president, he was ousted in 2019 and replaced by democratically elected Arce. So being opposed to Morales doesn’t seem like a bad thing on its own. Zuniga claims that a group of elites were destroying the nature and taking everything for themselves.

My best educated guess is that Zuniga is an opportunist who saw a fractured federal entity and wanted to wedge himself in the gap as its new leader, no matter how many lives he would need to throw on the fire in order to do so.
