Working (in French) with lot of people that are native English speakers, this one never gets old. We usually answer with “We know, that’s why your wage is subsidized”.

They usually come back at us when we say “Je suis fatigué”

I was just on a trip to France with my brother who doesn’t speak French. He was quite amused by all the signs that said retard, like when a train was running late. I speak French so it was utterly normal for me

I never actually understood why retarded was used by mechanics when a car wasn’t running right “The timing on this is a bit retarded” but now I know. Thank you

Not really surprising. That last part “tard” comes from the Latin tardus which basically means slow or late. The “re” particle originally just had a meaning of repetition, in this case. So being late (not for the first time? ) So changing the first part of the word wouldn’t change the meaning of it so easily. Maybe technically something like “intard” could make sense in that way (similarly as what you find in words like indomitable, impossible, ineffective etc), but it doesn’t really exist. Or if we want to make it more meme-like, tarden’t?

Protarded actually exists as a slang with completely different meaning, but that’s out of scope

Overall useless information for most, but anyway

There’s also a thing called a retarder built into lorries and other heavy vehicles so they don’t melt their brake pads, think engine breaking as the basic version, add special engineering sauce and you get something that is good at slowing stuff down without burning up, but not good at all at arresting it in place. The term is also used with railroads but those are actual breaks. Similar to the ones you see on roller-coasters.

That instance has server wide word filtering enabled that can’t be removed.

        I’m actually OK with it.

It’s their instance, you can check the wordlist in the config. It’s the slur_filter_regex. If it would bother me too much I’d change instance or spin up my own.
I’m more enraged by shadow banning like on “other platforms”.

Of course Marx isn’t really a good hold up either. Any actually communist society probably wouldn’t follow a lot of his doctrines. His beliefs, if actually implemented, would have all ended in civil unrest anyway. His views were inherently unfair and very much open to abuse and corruption. If you were unlucky enough to be on the bottom rung of society then that’s where you stayed.

A modern view of communism would be much closer to socialism than anything Marx advocated for. At least socialism allows for social advancement.

On a continuum where you’ve got tankies on one side and socialism on the other, Marx would be closer to the Tankies end of the spectrum than the socialist. He’s definitely not in the middle.

My guy you don’t know shit. Marx believed in a classless society. There would be no “rungs”. Also what he believed in is socialism, because communism is a form of socialism. This is what happens when you believe what the right wing tells you about Karl Marx without actually asking any leftists or reading it for yourself.

A lot of the things Tankies believe like the concept of a Vanguard party happened after Marx. Marx would have never approved of the USSR, or at least how it ended and all the things that happened under Stalin.

Yeah but he didn’t. Because money still exists and been poor meant you got less money. So no matter what he said you would still have less. You’d need UBI to really go classless

Fair enough. I know a lot of his views were rooted in traditions and biases he grew up around. My point was more just that tankies and places like modern Russia and China aren’t really communist.

My girlfriend is Chinese and she has shared so many examples of classism and wealth inequality there, many of which are enforced by the state and its laws. China is in many ways no more egalitarian than the US.

What? it looks fine to me, outside of the general difficulty of reading regex. I mean, it’s not meant to be readable, it’s meant to catch all the different spellings if what they want to filter and do so.

Perhaps it’s a sexual thing. You know like if you are hit a lot as a child.

Perhaps Tankies learn to enjoy censorship and repression. That’s the only justification I can think of for censoring themselves, it’s pretty hilarious when you think about it.

          Nope. Completely missed the point.

What is unspoken there is that censorship is always based on good intentions such as yours. People trying to censor sex are trying to do the same thing you’re trying to do with censoring hate speech.

“Only censoring the bad stuff” is not the solution here. It’s the source of the problem.

Anon is a retard. Also why did that word go out of style? I know damn well it’s because it was abused but by definition:

to delay or impede the development or progress of : to slow up especially by preventing or hindering advance or accomplishment

It’s a fair critique. We need to stop this PC bullshit. I’m saying this as a father of two children in the spectrum and neither of them are retards.

It’s not about being PC, it’s about how the word is used. There’s nothing wrong with the word as it’s defined, but when it becomes a common insult it becomes less acceptable. Just like any other swear word.

Any word can become an insult. It’s time to take some words back. We have to actively correct misused words. It may make a difference.

Well queer used to be an insult but the LBGTQ+ community reclaimed it. First though, some time needs to pass and afterwards the community that was targeted needs to decide to want to use the word.

You may invent words as long as you like, but those words can definitely become corrupted as well. It will be an endless cycle.

Look at something written 500 years ago. 100 years ago. 50 years ago. Language changes all the time, and there is no stopping that. Yep, language is an endless cycle of switching out common words and adapting to social rules. I’d highly reccommend to follow that flow instead of trying to bring back the “good old days” when n-words and r-words were common and accepted.
