There is a petition ongoing for Germany so that working on open source projects is recognized as volunteer work. Context: Anyone who writes, maintains and translates software is officially doing this as a hobby in Germany. In terms of tax and funding law, working on open source projects does not count as volunteering, unlike working in a sports club, in youth work or in the rescue service.

No thanks. I would not be able to have unemployment benefits while doing volunteer work in my country.
Technically you can, but they have to approve and it cannot compete with the “normal” job market (which it would, as open source is generally competing with proprietary software, and it’s normally my job to write software)
why 3rd party petition site instead the official one provided by the gov?
I’m not aware of this. Maybe you can provide it.

It’s pretty cool you guys are credited in some way for volunteering. Good luck with this :)
It wasn’t? Why?
It is considered as a hobby in Germany. In terms of tax and funding law, working on open source projects does not count as volunteering, unlike working in a sports club, etc.
What are the legal/tax implications of volunteering? Do you get “credit” for that time, or something?
