175 $ are still expensive as hell for RAM. Cheaper than 400 though, but don’t let them scam you into thinking it’s cheap.

I’m pretty sure you can just use special risers to get sodimms to work on a desktop. Not completely necessary to microsolder. It’ll run at a slower speed though

I use them in my NAS because I happened to have 2x16GB sticks of DDR4 SODIMM lying around and didnt feel like dropping $400 to get proper RAM

They report at 3200MT/s in the OS through the riser. I’ve never actually tested the real speed to see if that is correct, but they seem to work okay.

Yea there are risers but they are a PITA for stability. From testing I’ve seen, you can get them in one time and they work just fine. You take them out, put them back in, now there’s a chance your PC will just not work right anymore.

How often do you take your RAM out and put it back in?

But yeah, I see your overall point about reliability.

Well yea but imagine having an issue in your PC at that point. It would create so much more guesswork and headaches imo, but if it’s all you have it’s all you have

I vaguely recall using them once for some project eons ago and I must have been lucky, because they just worked. This was back in the DDR2 days though, I think. Like I said, back when dinosaurs were still roaming the Earth.

Blighted Agent’s solder up challenge has been a pretty fun watch as well, for those interested these kind of repair / upgrade videos.
